I found Sandals Negril to be everything I wanted in a resort. The facilities were great, the staff was fantastic, the food was excellent, plentiful, and with great variety, and there was plenty of things to do...all free for anything non-motorized. The beaches were well manicured daily and you just couldn't beat the service anywhere inside the resort (with no tipping allowed). There was very little to complain about: The island is very humid and some of the open air restaurants could have used a little more air movement. The prices at the gift shop were astronomical. The app: Sandals wants you to use their app to plan your day or week and it sort of works, however, the resort is laid out in a non linear sort of way and, at least for me, a map would have been nice. No maps were in the app and a hard copy paper map could not be provided (I asked). I got oriented after a few days but a map seemed like a no brainer to me. Some of the restaurants required a reservation and the app included a feature to let you to do that but it didn't work. I was told that feature has never worked. It was easy enough to call the concierge to make reservations anyway. The roads in Jamaica are bad. There is no maintenance on the roads at all. Draw your own conclusions why. You would think with such a rich environment (the perimeter of the entire island is almost exclusively resorts) the roads could at least be passable but they're not. There seems to be only one 2 lane road around the island so any excuse will stop traffic. My trip from the airport to the resort was advertised as taking less than an hour and a half and it took over 4 hours. The central part of Jamaica is pretty poor but most of the people are friendly. The airport in Montego Bay is a time warp from the 1970's. The majority of staff there are good people unless they have 10 cents worth of authority. I found the people running the Jamaican equivalent of the TSA to be poorly trained without understanding their jobs and just making things up as they went. They were also rude and obnoxious and I attributed this to the little bit of authority they possessed. In summation; it's a good thing Sandals has other resorts in other areas. They own 6 or 7 resorts in Jamaica but I'll never go back because of the roads and the airport experience. Getting out of the resort compound and looking around 'in country' just made me sad in a way. I will definitely go back to a Sandals resort, just not any in Jamaica.
