I waited a month before writing this so I could think about it properly. Ultimately I decided to post it because I didn't want others to rely on my previous reviews of this place. I have visited Edosan twice before in 2015 and 2017 and both times I gave it a perfect score. The rooms are not well maintained. The walls have bits and pieces falling off and you can see whats behind the walls, e.g. wiring etc. The table in the room had lacquer peeling off and had stains all over it. The cupboards, equipment and painting have the same issues. We also asked for 2 extra pillows but they said they could only give us one because they didn't have enough pillow cases. The food here was terrible. Way below what you would expect for a Ryokan dinner, we could get a better meal at any casual Japanese restaurant in Japan, e.g. an Izakaya or a Teishoku. And for sure, I had much better meals the last 2 times that I visited so standards here have plummeted. Service here is isn't bad but its not up to the standard of what you expect at a Ryokan and not even close to what we used to have in our previous visits. We had a chat with one of our servers and he said that he was from the University nearby and was working part-time. Its possible that Edosan has let go of their permanent staff and have replaced them with part-timers. I'm sure covid has been hard on them but they can't cut costs everywhere and still charge guests the same price. At the end of our stay we paid our bill at the front counter and no one saw us off or said goodbye. This is not common, in fact its never ever happened to me at a Ryokan stay (even at places worst than Edosan). So not sure whats up with that. I was extremely disappointing overall, please avoid this place. Its not worth the hefty price tag and maybe not worth even a normal price tag.
