My husband and I stayed at the Rei del Mediterrani in Playa de Muro, Mallorca, which is marketed as a 4-star luxury hotel. On arrival, the hotel made a great first impression. It looked very luxurious, and the reception staff were welcoming, with Flo in particular being incredibly helpful and supportive during our stay. Our room on the third floor initially seemed nice and well-presented, making us feel optimistic about our holiday. We had booked half-board, while the hotel also offered an all-inclusive option. One of the main reasons we chose this hotel was its advertised proximity to nearby bars and restaurants, as we were eager to explore. However, we quickly discovered that there wasn’t much nearby, and Google Maps became essential for finding places to visit. The hotel is located within a residential area, which lacked atmosphere. We did enjoy visiting the nearby port, which was easily accessible by bus. The area had plenty of lively bars and restaurants, offering exactly the holiday vibes we had hoped for. Unfortunately, the positive start wasn’t sustained, and the hotel fell short of its "4-star luxury" claim. In my opinion, this was a standard 4-star at best. Key details were missing that would have elevated the experience. For example, there was no iron or ironing board in the room, no bathrobe or slippers, no tea/coffee-making facilities, and no room service—small touches that you’d expect from a luxury hotel. The entertainment was another disappointment, with both daytime and evening activities failing to meet expectations. Worse still, I contracted food poisoning during my stay. At that point, I had only eaten food provided by the hotel. The food was always lukewarm and never properly hot, which raises questions about food safety. Half-board guests had no separate menu; we were served the same food as the all-inclusive guests. On the third day, we encountered a serious ant infestation in our room. It was a full-blown invasion. The staff moved us to another room the following morning, but it was clear that ants were a widespread issue throughout the property. The pool area suffered from similar neglect, with spillages from previous days not being cleaned, further attracting ants. To make matters worse, my husband developed a skin infection, which our GP later suggested was likely due to the swimming pool. The pool had appeared visibly dirty on at least one occasion. It is a real shame because, on the surface, this hotel looks lovely. However, once you scratch beneath the surface, the issues with cleanliness, maintenance, and service become very apparent. Overall, I do not believe Rei del Mediterrani lives up to its 4-star luxury promise.
