Overall, Flinders Backpackers was a solid choice. I stayed in a private room, which was small but had everything I needed, including a TV with Netflix. The shared areas were well set up — a fully equipped kitchen, a living room with a pool table, and a cool bar, all adding to a fun, vibrant atmosphere. Although it was quite busy, the vibe was lively and friendly. However, my check-in experience was disappointing, especially since I was there for work. After a 32-hour journey from Portugal, I arrived around 8 am, well ahead of the 2 pm check-in time. The hostel does state when booking that they’ll try to have rooms ready earlier if possible but can't guarantee it. Despite this, I didn’t feel any effort was made to expedite the process. I was the only guest there for check-in at that time, and I saw cleaning staff around, but I still had to wait until 2 pm. The receptionist suggested I could sleep in the common area, but I was utterly exhausted and needed the room to rest properly before working. Unfortunately, there was no real accommodation on that front. Another major issue was the noise from the air dryers in the bathrooms. The walls are quite thin, and despite signs reminding guests not to talk on the phone in hallways after 10 or 11 pm, the dryers were much more disruptive. They were loud, ran frequently, and often went off in the middle of the night — sometimes for up to 20 minutes. This noise disturbed my sleep significantly, which made it challenging to get the rest I needed for work. Overall, while Flinders Backpackers has great facilities and a lively atmosphere, the lack of flexibility at check-in and the excessive noise from the dryers impacted my experience, particularly for a work trip

First time staying a hostel, I had a private twin room which exceeded my expectations and was clean with the basics provided I.e., towel, storage locker and small table/chairs. Communal shower and toilets are cleaned daily which is much appreciated, however the facilities on my floor were often closed for cleaning at what I consider to be peak time (8-9am). It’s not an issue to pop downstairs and use the other communal showers and toilets but it would be great to review the times of the cleaning schedule so that the same floor is not affected daily. The communal kitchen is clean with lots of appliances, big enough to accommodate the large number of travelers with a nice spot to sit and eat. Plenty of cold and ambient storage for personal food items. Communal lounge area is also a nice and friendly spot with music, pool table and plenty of seating however the staff could do more to ensure the area is not too rowdy on weekends, I appreciate many travelers like to pre-drink and party there before heading out but kicking footballs around and screaming the place down is not enjoyable for those who are preferring a more quiet evening. Staff are very friendly and always willing to help, the discount for the bar downstairs is a nice bonus. Fantastic location next to Flinders Street Station which easy access across the whole city. Highly recommend as a great place to stay with good management and well maintained facilities.

This hostel was okay. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Room was a bit mess up but it was because of my room mates. The hostel was safety and there were lockers for your stuff. Location was very good: in front of this hotel left free tram around the city.

Aah flinders , where dreams are made and then broken. I called this great castle my home for 3 months , and what a 3 months it was. From the nightly ********* fights to the people shagging in the bed above you , nothing can quite beat the magic of this establishment. The staff( with one big exception) are friendly and nice , the location allows you to see everything Melbourne has to offer , and of course most importantly, there’s always a new hottie to drunkenly try your luck with . Only downside is you can’t drink after 10pm, but luckily I have mastered drinking wine out of a tea cup .

The pillow and blanket are stinks. Room was smelly. Broken fan and not working heater. No channel to watch. The toilet are dirty people do number one and two didn’t flushed and came back later I still saw it dirty. I forgot to read before I sign so while checking out line was so long I took out my vape and vape once and got told then when checking out they kicked me out for vaping and didn’t return my deposit money. Whatever. Perhaps if I’m white then will let go with a warning. Place is cheap yes but can’t sleep even on level 10, so noisy. People still running and talking loud outside the room. One level is a bar/club. So noisy and dirty and smell. They could of let me of with a warning but kicked me out and took my deposit money. Whatever I would never come back anyway. Bye bye whatever

OK, this was my first time to Melbourne, AUS and first overseas since pandemic. I found this hostel the most reasonable for me. At the time I booked it, the reviews were good but not great, so I didn't expect so much. I just want to experience everything I could. What I liked Surprisingly, when I arrived, the reception was nice and informative. I found my bed was well prepared (6 bed mix room). The room was rather humid because of other guests, I guess. I also found the bathroom and toilet was clean and looked just had been renovated. So, my luck, I got the new one. Hot and cold water all fine. For this I can say it above my expectation. About the location, it is unbeatable. It located in city center and in front of Tram stop & train station. The crowd is typical hostel crowd, you can chit chat with everyone. The public room (together with dining, front desk, luggage, relaxing) is rather too crowded for me, so I'd better go out. What I Not so much liked. 1. Just one lift / elevator worked out of two during my time there. There's announcement about it, so it's OK. 2. On my last day, 11th floor bathroom had pipe problem. I consider it as force majeure. We had to use other floor's. 3. The magnetic keycard sometimes won't open the door. Need to reset it at front desk. Hope this work for fellow travellers and the management.

I’ve stayed in hostels around the world and I’ve never had so many issues with a hostel. The showers are cold, the Victoria free wi-fi is better than the hostel wi-fi, the tumble dryer didn’t dry my clothes despite paying around $10 for a wash & dry and there is a lack of communication between staff/ lack of staff training. Except Ash, she was very efficient when checking me in and out. Lack of security in the hostel, anyone can use the lift to get in to reception which is why theft is common especially on Friday and Saturday night. My friend had his bag stolen from the reception floor and staff assured us that this rarely happens but I met a guy who had his passport stolen the night before and I met another girl who had $100 stolen from her room. When my friend has his bag stolen staff were unable to check cctv cameras or take any further action until a manager or supervisor was present as only they could access the system. Another friend of mine was looking to cancel her stay and was told she couldn’t get refunded but could instead have credit for another 2 night stay. When she tried to use a night of credit they asked for her credit voucher, when she told them she didn’t receive a voucher they said they couldn’t do anything about it and she would need to pay for another night which could potentially be refunded by the manager but there were no guarantees. She is still waiting for contact from management. During my stay a manager or supervisor was not present and no issues have been resolved. Wouldn’t recommend to anyone. All of this happened over 3 nights only!!! If I could rate 0 I would.

Flinders Backpacker’s is a great place to stay. The rooms are well maintained and safe, and very comfortable. Level 3 is the common area with a huge kitchen and reception. The staff are very friendly and helpful with plenty of advice. I was on Level 6 and whilst you could hear noise outdoors, it didn’t prevent me sleeping. It was a Friday and Saturday night so not unexpected. You don’t need to take linen - the rooms are have everything including towels, doonas and pillows. They lost a star because only half the toilets and showers were working on our floor with dribbles coming out of the shower heads.

Clean, cheap, friendly hostel in an excellent location. The free breakfast was such a nice touch. The hostel has 11 floors, I was on the 11th floor and did not experience any noise issues. The hostel is well maintained and organised really well. The only negative thing is the hot water in the showers was inconsisten. Would recommend!
