Hôtel Vaubecour - Centre Lyon Ainay - Perrache

Great location, friendly staff, and bathrooms are modern and a good size. But the rest of the hotel is very basic and old. The hotel is on the second floor of a residential apartment building. You have to carry your luggage on your own into the elevator which is a few steps up and then down the hall into the hotel. The hallways are dated. The floors creak and you can hear the people upstairs walking around. There are no rugs or floor coverings in the room (just the natural wood floors). There is a tiny table with a kettle for tea only, but no coffee is available in the room. Lighting is dim. TV is the same size as my office monitor. Bed was fine but sits lower than standard beds. Only got one lumpy pillow. You cannot control the heat and it was pretty cold when we first checked in. Warmed up later. But be prepared if you are going there in the winter. You can hear everything going on in the building and in the street. Luckily, it is not a street with heavy traffic. No little amenities like cotton balls or facial tissues. Shower is a nice size and good bathroom vent. Sink is small. Towels are very thin and rough. It is one level better than a dorm room. Would recommend for single travelers on a budget, but definitely not for couples or families.

I just finished a 4 night stay at the Hotel Vaubecour, and I would absolutely book this hotel again. I arrived a bit early, but Erica at the front desk - who has a complete delight! - offered to store my bags, gave me a map of the city with several suggestions, offered me water, and gave me an estimate on when my room would be ready. I booked a suite as this was a bit of a celebration trip. It was immaculately clean. And when they say the windows are sound proof, they are not exaggerating. The windows are also covered with heavy light-blocking drapes as can be attested by my sleeping until almost noon the first morning! The room is a bit small by American standards, but the history of the building and charm of the interior absolutely outweighed anything I was possibly missing in size. The location was perfect, within walking distance of most of the popular sites, near a metro station for those further out, surrounded by restaurants, and next door to a corner market. One thing for American visitors to consider: like most historic hotels, this one does not have air conditioning. I opened the windows in the mornings and evenings to catch the breeze and then closed the heavy drapes during the day. The provided fan was immensely helpful as well.

Stayed 2 nights midweek in April 25. In a very nicely renovated old building in the Panache area; 10 mins walk to metro and tram stops and close to lots of eating and shopping options. Hotel is on the 2nd floor, through a quaint corridor and up a tiny lift. Room small by 'chain hotel' standards, but more than adequate, with good storage. Quiet clean, well equipped, comfy and beautifully decorated. Very nice modern bathroom. Fantastic staff. You can get a very generous breakfast at a bargain 11 euros. Rated at 2*, but I would give it 3 1/2.
