Hotel Material was a great value stop in our tour of Japan.
We stayed for 2 nights as a family of four and it provided everything we needed. The bunks were large and ample for even adults. The sunken king bed was unusual, but easily the largest bed I slept in in Japan and well worth the investment. The shower was also excellent with both great water pressure and was tall enough to accommodate me at 6ft without sitting, a first for me here.
The room was clean and well presented and even came with some games to occupy the kids. The staff weee helpful and happy to look after our bags before check in.
The hotel also has a lovely roof terrace available which we weren’t expecting.

Hotel material is located in such a great place. Easy walking to temples and shrines. Lovely views to the tree clad hills (very close) and easy access to buses and the subway. The front rooms (the smaller rooms) are nosy enough from the road.
The best thing of all was Geronimo the manager who was so friendly and welcoming, helpful and knowledgeable, he really made the hotel feel like a home from home. Thanks for a wonderful visit in kyoto.

8月に5人家族でマテリアルルームに1泊しました。清潔感があり、子どもたちは2段ベッドに大喜び。屋上を自由に使ってよいとのことだったので街で購入した中華などを持ち込んで食べたのですが、夕陽が本当にきれいで忘れられない思い出になりました。また、朝食用にもらったパンやサラダも美味しく、大満足でした。次は五山送り火の日にぜひ利用したいです。

It was an excellent experience to find this place. This is my favourite hotel in Kyoto and probably in all Japan: very clean, comfortable, beautyful, the food is amazing and the staff is absolutely the best. I definitely recommend it without hesitation. I will go there every time I will visit Kyoto.

Zero stars are not available as a rating to give to this so-called hotel. Everywhere else we travelled in Japan was formidable, except for Hotel Material in Kyoto! Terrible place! Please take note of worst reviews and multiply by many factors. This is not a place to rest or enjoy your stay. Bug spray and skin protection needed!

Great service, very clean rooms, and great advice! The reception desk especially was very helpful and considerate, they helped me on two occasions with advice about transport and dinner. I would definitely visit again, having had a great experience here.

Hotel Material i(in the Higashiyama Ward ) is way overpriced for what it is. There is no elevator. Room was really tiny and while looks clean, we both were bitten over night, hopefully not by bed bugs. The mattress is basically on the floor which can be challenging for people with mobility issues. Walls (and ceilings) are thin and a lot of trafic noise and yet a little far from the bus station which you need to go to any attraction. There is nobody to talk to late or early morning.

probably the nicest hotel I stayed at in japan. The owner is there to check you in and he was so very helpful the entire trip. He spoke perfectly fluent English and was willing to help with any thing that you need. 10/10 for him alone. They also have a ramen shop at first floor which was honestly one of the best we had in japan.
