The room was decorated perfectly and was very comfortable. Staff were helpful and friendly. The location is great, a five minute walk to Derwent Water. Breakfast was tasty and there was lots of choice. Would definitely recommend.

Uncomfortable Experience Due to Rude Staff – Disappointing Stay I rarely leave negative reviews, but I felt it was important to share my experience as it made me extremely uncomfortable during my stay. From the moment I checked in, the deputy manager was surprisingly rude and unwelcoming. He gave me dirty looks and was noticeably passive-aggressive, to the point where I felt uneasy. I was genuinely shocked by the hostility — especially as a guest arriving alone. As I waited near the entrance with my bags, a kind and cheerful Asian lady offered me assistance. I politely declined as my partner was on his way. Moments later, the deputy manager began shouting at her in another language, right in front of me. It was clearly a heated exchange, and they didn’t seem to care that I was standing there. It was very awkward and uncomfortable to witness. Later, when I came back downstairs to head out, the deputy manager was sitting nearby and stared at me the entire time — not breaking eye contact even when I looked directly back at him. It felt incredibly intimidating, especially as I was alone at the time. I didn’t feel comfortable confronting him directly, so I waited to raise the issue later. Unfortunately, I was told nothing could be done since the manager wasn’t on site. Overall, this experience really impacted what should have been a peaceful and enjoyable stay. I hope the management seriously addresses the professionalism and behavior of their staff — especially those in leadership roles. No guest should be made to feel this way.

Let me start by complementing the excellent staff at the Royal Oak. However, the food was distinctly average, the chips were obviously frozen ones. We have been regular visitors to the Royal Oak, and the food has always been delicious. I don't know what's happened, but the food and decor were first class prior to the refurbishment. It makes me think that if something is not broken, don't fix it.
