Very welcoming and friendly staff, room very clean and a well equipped bathroom, bar selection good and reasonable, food top quality and plentyfull,. The best flavoured steak and ale pie ever. Good conversations with owners when relaxing in the evening. Only 3 miles or so from Hexam Town centre. A perfect retreat for the area.

Having booked afternoon tea in such a scenic spot, our expectations were high. We were greeted warmly, shown to a spot next to a roaring lig fire, and served drinks. My dietary needs were checked and our drinks orders taken. The tiered platters came shortly aftetwards, offering sandwiches with an array of favourite fillings, fresh cream meringues, and fruit scones with sliced cakes. On the way out, we treated ourselves to some of the traybakes to enjoy later. Although quiet, the character and charm of this 16th century property lends a lovely atmosphere. Is there anything better than sitting next to a real fire, spring sunshine streaming through the windows, sipping a tipple, and a tower of treats to hand? Highly recommend.

Very much out on its own on a country road.In side has a very atmospheric pub feel. Lovely warm greeting by the bar lady. We entered looking for sandwiches but were seduced by the scones on the bar. My choice of the cheese one was the best I have ever had. There are more substantial lunches available (although I was full) and apparently street food in the evening. A place not to be missed.

Nine of us went for lunch and received a warm welcome. The pub is cosy without being cramped and the beer was excellent. I have to say I think I had the best Haddock and chips I have ever eaten. The fish was perfectly cooked and flaked into juicy slices, the batter was crisp and the chips were fresh , Everyone was impressed with their meal. The bar was lined with old wood and had a comfortable feel. I do worry about the future of small pubs like this with the impending cost rises and hope it can weather the recession, because its a gem.

My husband walked St Wilfrid’s Way during our summer holiday (Hexham to Edinburgh), and Travellers Rest provided our accommodation and meals for the first legs of the walk. (I drove him to his start points and picked him up at the end of each day…it wouldn’t have worked using public transport). Darren and Ian were very friendly and welcoming (as were the bar staff) and the food Ian prepared was delicious. Sometimes we eat in the restaurant, and other times we had dinner in the bar, which was always buzzing with local residents and farmers. Our room was comfortable and the bathroom was spacious. If we’re ever back in this part of the country, we’d stay again.
