Facilities: old
Hygiene: average
Environment: An isolated place, a good place for the elderly to gather and retire
Service: The front desk manager's service attitude was not good. He was not satisfied with the two room arrangements. The first time was a side room with only half a large window. The second time was a smaller room after communication with Ctrip. The suitcase was opened and there was nowhere to put it. 😭
The advantage is that the breakfast is Scottish 😌.

My partner and I staed two nights (Sunday to Tuesday) of this week, and it was one of the most relaxing and amazing getaways we have had. My partner had arranged for a room upgrade, chocolates, flowers and champagne as a surprise for me, and he had absolutely no problems in organising this. We stayed in one of the deluxe rooms, which was stunning, with gorgeous views and very comfortable bed and sofa. The common areas in the hotel are very traditional and are perfect for curling up with a book and a pot of tea! The grounds on which the hotel is on are beautiful and there are some lovely walks you can go on along the River Nith. We also had all meals in the hotel and the food was very good - good size portions with a high-end feel to them. Lastly, the staff were so friendly! Everyone was lovely and extrememly helpful, and great to have a natter with. We will definately be back as we came home so relaxed. If you need somewhere to switch off from the world for a few days, then this is your place!

I brought some friends for a meal on a Sunday evening. Sadly, the food was not good. I had cod loin which was dry and over-done. It came with sautéed potatoes and a hollandaise sauce, both of which were adequate, but fewer potatoes and a green vegetable would have been better. The roast beef, which my friend had was tough and obviously reheated from lunchtime, as were the vegetables. My other friends did not comment on their meals. Puddings were OK, but uninspiring. Service was peremptory.

Kenneth Double Room 4 nights · March 202 Solo traveller Reviewed: 15 June 2025 A very lovely cosy and unique we independent hotel in interesting and historical environments. Scored 8.0 Found the hotel to be like a small country house, ideally located for a bit of respite from suburban life! My room was dual aspect windowed and Ideal to just to look out to the River Nith. Found the main public room/hall like a big warm hug with its big log fire. I'd say the cost of the main meals in evening were excellent value consider if you were on your own, and with a bottle of wine for 4 nights! instead of driving in to Dumfries. (All were of top quality and dining room was never busy as well, added to ambience.) Breakfast also excellent, in sunny dining room. Found all staff bar one to be very friendly and happy to assist and chat and one even got my joke as regards my last morning breakfast of ordering Eggs "Cumberbatch" as in the actor Benedict Cumberbatch as opposed to Eggs Benedict!! An annoying humming humming/buzzing noise around my room which may have to do with the wood chip fuelled heating, as noticed small pumps located around the corridors. Bit of sound proofing around them may help. Returning at end of June, packing earplugs! Ordered a light lunch on the 1st day and didn't arrive as described, mentioned this at checkout and I'd have taken off bill, also my "Eggs Benedict" wasn't Salmon as stated on printed breakfast menu.

Lovely old property but needs a bit of TLC. We were upgraded at no extra cost, room was comfortable with a huge bed, and large seating area. Breakfast was OK but the table linen on every table left a lot to be desired. It was very creased and needed ironing.

This hotel must have been taken over recently - by people who do not know what they are doing. It was my favourite fishing hotel. It is now Scotland's answer to Fawlty Towers. I booked and paid in advance, yet on arrival I was asked in no uncertain terms by a surly receptionist rooted to her chair to pay a bill of £230.0 What..? With the exception of one waitress at breakfast, all the staff are indignant and unwelcoming. They would be better suited running a prison camp. As for the food...£34 for fish and chips...? The room was ok - just. The shower runs hot for 30 seconds then defaults to running cold. The bed is two singles shoved together with extremely lumpy mattresses giving an intolerably bad nights sleep. Whoever is responsible for the upkeep of the gardens and grounds should be sacked. It remains a fine old buiding, shabby but certainly not chic. Needs a serious update. I was there in late May 2025 and the hotel was empty. I wonder why...?

Beautiful setting but hotel a little tired. Bed was comfortable but the room very hot which made sleep uncomfortable. Breakfast was acceptable and staff very helpful. Basically it could be fabulous if some money was spent to tidy up and improve things like the windows, which would not open properly as broken
