This was my third visit here and second Christmas, the first had been prior to covid. The setting is stunning as are the rooms. Although I had booked two rooms for a family visit our rooms were at the opposite ends of the hotel which took away part of the enjoyment from my point of view. As already mentioned the rooms were outstanding and well equipped. The staff were exceptional and although at times appeared overstretched; went out of their way to be helpful and take care of any requests. The meals however were extremely disappointing. The first evening, a black tie event, took forever for each course to be served in spite of selections being made prior to our arrival. Other than the soup we were all disappointed with the quality of the food. However, Christmas Day lunch was even worse. Advertised as six course meal with wine pairings for each course the ‘wine pairing’ consisted of red or white with no attempt to pair. The delays experienced the first night were even worse: after being called in to dine it took around forty minutes for bread to be served and an hour between courses. This was compounded by the fact that another large party was also eating in a second large dining room which destroyed the atmosphere that a country hotel Christmas should have had. The other group were seated earlier but until then a chaotic atmosphere existed in the public areas. By the time our main course was served it was past 4pm. The sprouts were raw, the beans ultra ‘al dente’ and the red cabbage burnt. We were sorely disappointed, having expected a more gourmet experience and certainly not cafeteria quality. Shame that my hope of ending a very difficult year with a luxurious break should have been such a letdown.
