Hotel Housenkaku

As it is a historic building, the interior feels old, but the rooms had a nice tatami smell and were clean and comfortable. I think the oldness is charming too.

When I entered with no expectations due to the old exterior, I felt as if I had traveled back in time to the Taisho or early Showa eras, and there were many items that could be valuable cultural properties, from ornaments to paintings to walls and chairs. I looked around with great interest. It seems that some of the ceilings and walls of the rooms remain from the Taisho period, and even the benches in the public bath are worth a look. The large public bath was spacious enough to relax in, and the breakfast was small in number, but each one was made with care, and the white rice was so delicious that my companion had three refills. All the staff are calm and kind. It was a good accommodation where I could truly relax during my stay. The Oe hot springs where I stayed the next day were so bad that I wanted to go back here. I will use it again when I travel to Beppu, but I am hoping that the air conditioner, which is too old, will be replaced.
