Living in the greater Austin area, my wife and I decided to stay a night downtown to celebrate our anniversary. We never been to the Proper before, but are both interested in design and art, so we have heard about it a lot. Not only did we have an incredible visual experience - the hotel is gorgeous and the attention to details and design is truly first class and excellent; but we were also positively surprised by the culture and excellence of the staff. Surly we expected high level service from a hotel like the Austin Proper, yet they managed to surpass the expectation of service and hospitality. Oscar that received us as we checked in was truly a pleasure to interact with, and he made our stay very special. And from him, we had the same experience with everyone we encountered. The morning we checked out we got the answer to how this amazing culture exists: I happened to bump into Anis, the GM of the hotel; I had no idea I was having a conversation with the GM until a few minutes in; and they way he took a personal interest in us, ensured we had a good experience, and how he paid attention to details in our conversation and proved it by a handwritten card as we checked out told me everything I needed to know how the staff and guests are treated, and how this culture exists. Leading a non-profit with 50 staff, and almost 1,000 weekly volunteers, I understand how critical healthy culture is, and how intentional one need to be to create and protect it. Well done Anis and the leadership of Proper! Of course, rooms were amazing, food great etc. But more importantly, they made us feel like a million bucks! Thank you Proper, Anis and staff - we are already bragging about you and will surly be back.
