We were staying at the Premier Inn, Hothfield to attend our daughter’s funeral the following day. The flight from our home in Spain was obviously booked at short notice and had a late arrival date to Stansted, and the weather was terrible so the traffic on the roads was slow and heavy. This caused us to check in at the hotel later than expected, shortly before 9.00pm. The receptionist was kind, efficient and helpful as we explained our late arrival. We had pre-booked a table in the adjoining Beefeater for 9.00, which the receptionist confirmed. We took our luggage to the room and then went straight to the restaurant. This is where it all went downhill. One of the staff greeted us abruptly and asked what we wanted. I told her we had a reservation for 9.00pm (at that time it was about 9.08pm) and she said “not any more you haven’t, I’ve just cancelled it” Those were her exact words. When asked why, she replied that the kitchen closed at 9.00pm and the chef was going home. You can probably imagine how we, a couple in our late 70’s, felt after a long day of traveling for such a sad occasion. Why accept a reservation for 9.00pm if the kitchen closes at that time and why employ such a rude person? We have never had to endure such treatment anywhere in the world until then. I didn’t get the young woman’s name but she was rather large and had long plaits, that should be sufficient to identify her and obtain her comments on the situation. We ended up buying a sandwich from the petrol station across the road and eating it in our room. To say we were disappointed would be an understatement. When we told the hotel receptionist, she was astounded with the treatment we received. I have to say, we could not fault the receptionist and the treatment we received from her. This is no doubt where you say Premier Inn and Beefeater are two separate Companies and it would certainly appear that way with treatment from the two ends of the spectrum between them, however they are both part of the same group, are often co-located and feed upon one another. We expect the same high standards from each. Moving on, the beds were comfortable and service excellent. The rooms are a little tired and in need of updating to bring them to the standard of your other hotels.
