I have lived in Sellwood for over 20 years and, in our opinion, it's by far the best place to be in Portland... welcome! If you are coming for work, to visit with family, or simply want to explore and relax, you are sure to find comfort during your stay! The SpaceThe private studio is very quiet, offering a cozy space you will quickly settle into. It has been built to match the style of the bungalow home built in 1915. While it doesn't have a kitchen, everything is new... refrigerator, toaster, coffee pour over, and hot water pitcher. All the furnishings, linens, and Smart TV... all are new. Very clean and comfortable, naturally cool in the summer (fantastic insulation), warm in the winter... this space is settled in the magical town of Sellwood. Many have shared that this is the best VRBO they have stayed in. We are grateful for the overwhelmingly positive response.Guest accessWe have a seasonal garden, a terraced, outside space in which you can listen to the soft sounds of a water feature.Other things to noteNetflix is available!Username: Sellwood HomePassword: walkintheparkWe realize Oregon is a cannabis friendly state, however our property is not. It has been with a great deal of thought that we have come to this decision. Please refrain from smoking or vaping of any kind, anywhere on the premises. Savings Alert: We're just back to VRBO so to get our search rank up there, we're offering bargain rates (from the $179/nt that Grandpa's often goes for). We've hosted for 20 years and have a solid track record. Grandpa's Bunkhouse is a stand-alone cabin in our backyard kitchen garden, and it really was our grandfather's. Expect pride of ownership from 3 generations, appointments that speak to family and Pacific Northwest history, and a homestay that is simply a cut above. AMENITIES -Kitchen w/ copper farm sink & compact range and refrigerator--We repurposed Grandpa's old-growth fir workbench for the counter -Coffee maker with wear-ever filter -Queen bed with linens from LL Bean -Bathroom with 5-star tumbled stone shower, rain head, skylight -Vaulted 14 foot yellow cedar ceiling -French doors open out onto 4-season organic garden -Mitsubishi mini-split for heating and ac -Washer/Dryer -Wireless internet -Smart TV screen for your devices -Patio in common area for outdoor dining & lounging -Weber gas grill in common area -Sustainable no-chem gardens front, back, curbside -Private covered porch with seating Our grandparents bought the main house for their retirement, and it's been in the family since 1950. We have enjoyed hosting travelers since 2005 first in our daylight basement studio, Auntie's Hideaway (#724637), and since 2014 in our backyard cabin Grandpa's Bunkhouse (#594594). We accept dogs & cats guests in both studios. Our pet guest fee is $75 per pet guest. LOCATION OFF MAJOR BOULEVARD: -Easy access to downtown (20 min), airport (10 min) and the Columbia River Gorge. We are 2 blocks off Sandy Blvd, one of Portland's major thoroughfares which makes getting around quite speedy. -15 minutes from 3 of Portland's Eastside neighborhood districts: the Beaumont, Mississippi Avenue, and Alberta Arts FELINE ALERT: We have 2 cats who roam the premises, so we cannot host travelers with allergies. PARKING: Ample free street parking in front of our home. BIKE: Secure (uncovered) tethering for bikes in the backyard. Bring your own cable and padlock as the posts are too large for u-locks. INTERNATIONAL CREDIT CARDS: There is an additional charge for using international cards. Please inquire. MORE INFORMATION ON OUR HOME AND NEIGHBORHOOD We Johnson's are of the mind that life is art, and we've had this property since 1950. So whether you choose our more affordable lower level basement suite with galley and stunning shower (Auntie's Hideaway) or our lovely stand-alone backyard studio with vaulted ceilings (Grandpa's Bunkhouse), expect to walk into charm and history--as well as quality. We are of relatively humble means here, but what we do, we try to do right.*The Grounds: This home is reminiscent of a Tuscan garden. Between the back beds and the front curbside gardens, your host Jean Johnson, grows much of the family's own organic produce year round. Our LL Bean picnic table seats 6. A flower garden and fountain make for an exceedingly inviting scene. *The Neighborhood: We are 10 minutes from the airport and 20 to downtown. Also 3 of Portland's hip neighborhoods--The Beaumont, Alberta Arts, and Mississippi Avenue--are 15 minutes away. We're also on the east side of the city, where it's easy to hop on the freeway to the Columbia River Gorge, which is listed as a National Scenic Area. We are in walking distance is Noodle Flat, where many of Portland's Asian restaurants line Sandy Boulevard--and Otto's Wood-Fired Pizza packs 'em in nightly. A major grocery is 3 blocks away, as is the historic Fairley's Pharmacy where you can sit at the lunch counter from the 1920s and order malteds made on the old fashion green machines. Annie's Doughnuts is just around the corner, and their fresh French crullers with maple icing are well worth the stroll. And for those interested in meditation, Dharma Rain Zen Center is 10 minutes by car, as is the Grotto. Espresso and croissants worthy of Portland's food culture are also 10 minutes by car over at Grand Central Bakery and Jim and Patty's on Fremont, as is Black Bird, an excellent unpretentious wine bar. Our neighborhood is safe to jog in and walk at night. Families with young children grace our block, and parents are often out with their charges for happy hour in the evening--spontaneous street gatherings at which guests are always welcome. Happy trails...We hope to see you soon. Elegant, private king bedroom studio suite with magical private greenhouse, private entrance, desk and ensuite bathroom. Enjoy radiant tile floor heat, charming greenhouse seating nook, spacious 2-person shower and an amenities cabinet with microwave, mini-fridge, teakettle & flatware - ideal for simple breakfasts or reheated leftovers. This spacious room is ideal for 1 or 2 guests who want an entirely separate private space and charming "interior garden" porch, but who don't need a full kitchen. This studio suite is unique in that it is an entirely separate, hotel-room-like space designed for your privacy and independence. This airy master suite is four steps down off of our driveway, entering through a very unique private victorian greenhouse for your enjoyment. The studio suite encompasses a portion of the basement of our rebuilt victorian home, fully daylit to the west with additional windows facing north and east, so it feels like a split lower level and not like a basement. It is an entirely separated and private apartment, entirely private for guests. The unique victorian greenhouse features your seating area and table, great for reading, games or breakfast in warmer weather - or in the winter, it ranges between 40 and 60 degrees and can be enjoyed with a wrap like a covered porch. This suite is perfect for travelers who, not needing a full kitchen or house/apartment, prefer a private and well-appointed bedroom and bathroom to call their own during their stay, with a private entrance that allows for independent check-in and check-out and all of the amenities that you would expect in a higher-end hotel room, including snacks and refreshments, tea and instant coffee, coffee maker for your own grounds, a microwave, mini-fridge, hair dryer, iron and ironing board, fresh towels and bedding and thoughtful, luxurious furnishings, tile and finishes, dimmable lighting and higher-end bathroom fixtures. The room gets a lot of direct sunlight in the afternoon, and features high-speed wifi and a modern desk overlooking the "interior garden" of the greenhouse and the expanse of sky through all of that glass. The tiled shower features two shower heads with plenty of room for couples. While some travelers love the unexpected interactions they discover with shared rooms in shared houses, our daylight basement guest suite offers a bedroom and bathroom accommodation that is simpler than an entire apartment, but with all of the advantages of a totally private space for those that prefer privacy and independence, as well as a very unique and romantic greenhouse space that is something special to experience.About pets:No pets allowed.About checkOut:Check out before 11:00 AM.About children:Children allowed: ages 0-17.About checkIn:Check in after 4:00 PM.About smoking:Smoking is not permitted.About minBookingAge:Minimum age to rent: 21.About events:No events allowed.

Our 2 bdrm space is a ground floor apartment full of natural light. No stairs required. The main Victorian house was built in 1892, the lower apartment in 2016, maximizing charm with modern flow and amenities. Walk score of 94 - walker's paradise! Many coffee shops, tea shops, juice shop, restaurants galore (ethnic cuisines, BBQ, Pubs, sushi, pizza, burgers, etc), grocery market, bus and light rail lines, wildlife refuge and 3 city parks, including Westmoreland Nature Play park. So much to LOVE about Sellwood! This is an ~800 sq ft accessory dwelling unit (ADU) built in 2016 and it comes with a good story. We lifted the original house (built in 1892) in the air to build the ADU and scooted the house over 5 ft so that the ADU would have its own patio with outdoor seating. It was a quite a spectacle! The result is a 2 bedroom apartment with a spacious living space and full size kitchen. Bathroom: There are 2 half baths with a total of 1 toilet. Our bathroom combo includes two separate rooms: (1) one half bath with a toilet and mini vanity and (2) another half bath with a shower with full vanity sink. Even though there is only one toilet, it is so helpful that it is in a separate room from the shower and vanity! You know who I'm talking about. We love this feature! Our place has 2 comfortable queen beds, plus 2 tri-fold mats. We provide all linens. The mats are slightly smaller than a twin and generally intended for children, but some adults tolerate them. The kitchen is fully functional and fully equipped, including gas stove, microwave and dishwasher. (But beware, there are many good restaurants in this town to tempt you to dine out.)Access: Follow the garden path to the left of our front stairs. It will lead to your patio and entrance. No stairs during this stay! We have a keyless lock, for which I will send you a private code for your stay - no keys to manage during your visit! This is a fun place to stay and a fun neighborhood to visit! We LOVE living in Sellwood! The apartment is a ground level daylight basement, or as they say in Chicago: a garden apartment. We live in the upper house. We are a family of 4 with a dog. We invested heavily in soundproofing but it is an older home and we did not achieve complete sound isolation. You will hear the dog romping occasionally and humans moving through the living space, you will NOT hear conversations or even voices. We've been hosting this apartment since we built it in 2016 and the pattern is that most people love our place. Don't take my word, read our reviews. Many have even described it as quiet, but at least one person was really annoyed by the sounds of our life. I strive to provide accurate information so that if you are someone who is seeking silence or is sound sensitive, you can recognize the mismatch in advance. You deserve to be delighted with your stay in Portland!!!We have an Accessory Short Term Rental permit as required by the City of Portland. Permit #17-265887.A little about the Sellwood neighborhood in Portland: Sellwood has a friendly village feel. It continues to evolve with new shops, restaurants, services and food carts moving in regularly. We find ourselves leaving the neighborhood less and less because most of our needs can be met right in our own neighborhood. Need coffee? There are 7 local coffee shops within walking distance. Tea, instead? Two blocks away, there are 2 tea shops and one is in a retired red caboose! Hungry? Within easy walking distance, there are 2 cart pods with various cuisines represented, and MANY restaurants along SE 13th. Eating in? Our New Seasons Market is 4 blocks away. They have everything for cooking a full meal and also have hot nourishing prepared foods. And Grand Central Bakery has some of the best sandwiches around. Shopping? Sellwood used to be famous for its antique shops. It still has some, but now there are many other shops, including toys, clothing, gift, spice and craft supplies. There's even an inviting shop dedicated to board games (Cloud Cap Games) with lots of games available to play in their on site game room.About pets:No pets allowed.About checkOut:Check out before 11:00 AM.About children:Children allowed: ages 0-17.Yes, we absolutely, positively welcome children..About checkIn:Check in after 4:00 PM.About smoking:Smoking is not permitted.About minBookingAge:Minimum age to rent: 25.About events:No events allowed.

There is a 2-car limit for guests staying the night. Respect for Neighbors:The William Waters House is on a quiet residential street and we have amazing neighbors on all sides. We strive to maintain positive relations with them, so for this reason we ask that you respect house rules around the 9-person maximum, noise level and parking.Interaction with Guests:We enjoy meeting guests upon your request but also understand and respect your privacy. We are usually nearby, and always available by text or phone to address any needs you have.Other things to note:The apartment is the entire first level of a 3-story historic home and the upper levels of the home are separate living quarters that we live in. While generally very quiet, there is some minimal sound transference. Quiet hours are between 10pm and 7am. Again, parties are strictly prohibited. Security Camera: There is a motion-activated security camera on the front porch directed toward the sidewalk which can record audio/visual. Our neighborhood, Irvington, is an upscale, historic, architecturally splendid area, great for quiet walks or for getting downtown in a heartbeat.
