Popular Holy Week Traditions

Holy Week

During Holy Week, you may see many traditions across the Philippines. These practices show the strong faith and community spirit of many Filipinos.

  • Visita Iglesia: Families or groups visit several churches in one evening to pray, usually on Holy Thursday.
  • Processions: Many towns hold large religious processions, especially on Good Friday. People walk through the streets carrying statues of saints and scenes from the life of Jesus. The Santo Entierro, a statue of the dead Christ placed in a glass casket, is often the highlight.
  • Pabasa: Communities hold the Pabasa, a continuous chanting of the Pasyón, which tells the story of Jesus’ life and sacrifice. It may last for many hours or even days.
  • Senakulo: Some towns perform a Senakulo, a live street play that shows the Passion of Christ. These performances can draw large crowds.
  • Fasting and Simple Meals: Many Filipinos avoid meat on Good Friday and eat simple food such as fish, vegetables, or traditional snacks like biko, suman, and binignit.
  • Quiet Reflection: Some families stay at home, pray together, or watch religious programs on TV.

Different regions celebrate Holy Week in their own way, so travelers may experience different traditions depending on where they visit.

  • Family vacations
Some families plan short trips to popular beach destinations like Boracay, Cebu, and Bohol.
  • Taking a break from the city
Travelers from busy cities like Manila often head to cooler places such as Baguio or Sagada to relax.
  • Time for reflection and rest
Others choose quiet places where they can pray, attend church events, and reflect during the Holy Week period.
💡 Travel Tip: The biggest travel rush is on Holy Wednesday and Maundy Thursday, with many people returning on Easter Sunday or Monday. Expect heavy traffic and crowded terminals.

We enjoyed our stay at Henann Regency (despite the monsoon and typhoon during the time of our visit). The staff let us check-in earlier than scheduled because the room was ready by the time we arrived at 1:00 PM. The direct pool access is very nice, especially if you are coming with kids. They provide pitcher and water dispenser along the hallways which contributes to minimal use of plastic bottles. The breakfast buffet is also nice. There are three restaurants to choose from facing the beach, Mesa for Filipino food, HapChan for Chinese and Christina’s, which I do not recommend because of their silly policy of not allowing children to be in their restaurant (bad experience during the time of our visit, it was raining heavily and there’s no guest inside but they still told us that we could not dine in Christina’s because we have a 2 year old baby with us; they asked us to sit in HapChan and pay for the premium price of Christina’s food). Christina’s management is not under Henann but just avoid going there if you are with a family and I hope Henann will do something about this. But overall, we had a nice short trip in Boracay in a stormy season 😂

We chose a transfer from airport through ferry port and onto hotel, whilst it was and did bypass certain obstacles i wasn't left feeling it was anything special. On arrival promptly told they needed a big deposit for room and listed all the dos and don't which will result in the loss of it. Then we found major building work was going on next door and overlooking the roof got infinity pool. No bar, buffet dinning which was normally cold and just waiting for a food pointing case. Overall, no I would not go back.

t’s a good hotel but a little bit tired. We had big room with 2 comfortable beds. The view was so-so- on the roof, but one day we saw monkeys there - it was fun ! The territory of the hotel is very beautiful- a lot of plants, trees and flowers. The staff is very polite, friendly and helps with any questions. The breakfast is quite good - eggs, pancakes, vegetables, fruits, fresh juice, coffee- in common we had all what we need. We like swimming pool - it’s big and beautiful. The beach of Movenpick is good too, but it was bad weather, so unfortunately we couldn’t enjoy it as well. And of course we liked chocolate hour - it was so tasty !

Great family stay with the best location! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We had a really pleasant stay at Henann Garden Resort. It’s definitely a great choice for families, especially if you want to be close to everything. The location is very convenient—Station 2, close to D’Mall, restaurants, shops, and just a short walk to the beach. We also really appreciated that the hotel accommodated our early check-in upon arrival. This was a big plus, especially when traveling with a child. The resort itself is spacious, with several pools and plenty of areas to relax. The direct access to the beach was also very convenient, so we didn’t have to walk far with our little one. Overall, Henann Garden is a very family-friendly and convenient place to stay in Boracay. Great location, good facilities, and accommodating staff. Would definitely consider staying here again!

Had a wonderful 3D2N stay at Henann Park Resort! The room was clean, spacious, and very comfortable. I especially loved the buffet breakfast with its wide selection of delicious food, and the pool was perfect for relaxing after a day at the beach. A small detail I really appreciated was the drying rack on the balcony—it made it so convenient to dry our wet swimwear. Overall, a great stay, and I'd definitely recommend this resort!

The Property & Ambiance True to its name, the resort feels like a massive botanical garden. The grounds are beautifully landscaped, filled with lush greenery, towering trees, and vibrant tropical flowers that instantly make you feel relaxed. Walking through the pathways to your room feels like exploring a hidden paradise. Amenities & Pools One of the biggest highlights is the pool selection. They have multiple expansive swimming pools, complete with fun water slides and shallow splash areas that are absolutely perfect for families. The main pool area is surrounded by trees, offering plenty of natural shade when the midday sun gets a bit too intense. Rooms & Service The rooms are spacious, exceptionally clean, and well-maintained. The air conditioning works wonderfully, and the beds are incredibly comfortable after a long day of swimming and island hopping. What truly sets this resort apart, though, is the hospitality. From the front desk to the pool attendants, the staff goes above and beyond with their warm hospitality and ready smiles. The Verdict Whether you are traveling as a couple looking for a serene getaway or a family wanting great amenities for the kids, Paradise Garden delivers. Excellent location, beautiful green surroundings, fantastic pools, and top-tier service. We will definitely be back!

We had a lovely stay here. On the beach and we had one of the best breakfast locations, almost right on the sand. The staff were very kind and helpful. Nice pools, solid little gym, we also had a nice Swedish massage which was fantastic, and again the breakfast buffet was terrific. We had an amazing stay at Savoy Hotel Boracay during our anniversary! From the moment we arrived, everyone made us feel genuinely welcome with their warm smiles and greetings every day. The hotel surprised us with a beautiful anniversary room setup—a lovely swan towel arrangement shaped into a heart, balloons, a complimentary cake, and a heartfelt anniversary greeting card. It was such a thoughtful gesture that made our celebration even more special. We also loved the convenience of the complimentary shuttle service to D’Mall and, most especially, the seamless airport-hotel-airport transfer. Everything was well-organized and hassle-free, making our trip stress-free from start to finish. We’d also like to give a special shoutout to the reception staff member who was on the 10:00 PM–6:00 AM shift (July 13). We weren’t able to get his name, but he went above and beyond for us. Our Pitik sa Keyhole photo hadn’t arrived before we checked out, and he proactively offered to personally send it to us via LBC. He took our contact details and handled everything for us without us even asking. That level of initiative and genuine care is something we truly appreciate. Thank you, Savoy Hotel Boracay, for making our anniversary so memorable. Your excellent service and thoughtful hospitality made us feel truly special. The hotel is huge. It's a bit of a walk to the breakfast area. Also, this area is exclusive to hotel guests, as there's nothing else nearby. The beach is beautiful, but with so many guests, it feels a bit less private. The hotel's luxury feels more Western than Asian, which was a bit over-the-top for me and made it hard to relax. Considering the price, I didn't think it was particularly good, so I probably wouldn't stay here again.

Upon checking in, we received welcome sweets that weren't very tasty! (But they looked cute, so I was happy). The hotel had a few restaurants, but there was a Filipino restaurant and a mall nearby that caught our eye, so we ate lunch and dinner there. This is a wonderful hotel, exactly as described, and the photos are completely accurate. The staff is incredibly friendly and goes above and beyond to ensure a comfortable stay throughout your vacation. Any issues that arose were resolved in minutes. You can tell they truly value their reputation. Just a heads-up: payment at the hotel is cash-only. The hotel's location is absolutely perfect, beyond words. It's right in the heart of all the entertainment and leisure spots, and only a 5-minute walk to the sea. I do want to mention one significant drawback: there was a lot of noise from equipment operating near our room, which was quite unpleasant. You do get used to it over time and eventually tune it out, but it might be an important consideration for some. In the last few days of our stay, the hot water started to disappear, becoming only lukewarm, and this issue couldn't be resolved. Also, the Wi-Fi suddenly stopped working completely on our last night (Friday to Saturday) without any explanation, so we had to use mobile internet until check-out. For us, the breakfasts were a notable downside – the selection of dishes was extremely limited. Coffee was only served from a pot (likely instant), and coffee from the machine was an extra charge. However, after I brought this up, the issue with the coffee machine was resolved. For the next six breakfasts, they made complimentary machine coffee for my partner and me. Special thanks to the entire hotel team and for the lovely daily notes in our room that brightened our mood and made our vacation even more enjoyable!

Since there were two showers in the room, we never had any issues with waiting turns))). The location is excellent, you can walk to D'Mall. The hotel is quite worn out and, especially during holidays, not worth the money. Our room was in building B; it was spacious and quiet, making for a comfortable sleep. However, the windows faced an alley between buildings, so very little daylight entered. The air conditioning worked well but was very noisy. The internet worked fine in the lobby and on the beach, but it was very weak in the room. There are a few sun loungers and cushions on the beach, but you need to claim them by 8 AM, or even earlier. By 9 AM, everything is usually taken. The loungers don't have soft mattresses. You can get beach towels and mats from the lobby if you don't manage to get a sun lounger. There's an infinity pool on the rooftop where you can watch the sunset away from the crowds, but there are only a few loungers there too, so you also need to get there early. Breakfasts include various types of meat, scrambled eggs, rice, fruits, pastries, toast, coffee, some sweets, and vegetables. Overall, you'll be full, but everything is cooked with a lot of oil. I wouldn't recommend having lunch or dinner here or ordering food by the pool; there are many cafes and restaurants nearby where you can eat delicious food. In the evenings, there's always some entertainment at dinner, like music or a fire show. The hotel is located in the most central part of Station 2, just steps from D'Mall, with Epic and Om clubs nearby. However, for us, there were too many people, especially from sunset onwards. There were also many vendors offering their services and goods, which got annoying, and many people just strolling around or sitting on the beach. It was noisy and lacked any sense of privacy. Cleaning consists of changing towels and emptying the trash.

Friendly and helpful staff. Very quick response to room requests and room service. Fire dancing is very good. Clean rooms and hotel grounds. Breakfast buffet is average. Had to hunt down coffee most times and toaster was broken entire 8 days. They won’t put out any new food after 9am even though buffet lasts until 10am. Small pool and no area to sit around pool. Room was ok but needs upgrading of furniture and closets. No way to get transportation to hotel lobby from street you have to walk quite a distance to the beach from for the entrance. Great beachfront location where all the action is on station 2.

We enjoyed this hotel. The room was spacious and the view was simply stunning. Breakfast was very tasty. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. They also have a small private area with sun loungers and umbrellas. Beach was amazing too. The only negative aspect we noticed was that during breakfast, a couple of guests came into the restaurant wearing swimwear and bikinis, and the restaurant staff did not say anything to them. It didn’t feel hygienic when they chose food while undressed and then sat down at the table.

We truly enjoyed our stay! The staff were very accommodating and made us feel welcome throughout our visit. The service was excellent and really stood out. While the food selection could be improved with more variety, it didn’t take away from the overall experience. We still had a great time and everything else exceeded our expectations. Overall, it was a wonderful stay and we’ll definitely be coming back!

Our first night was in a large suite, which was lovely. We then moved to a standard room, which was also perfectly fine. The hotel's location is excellent; it's quiet yet only a 10-minute walk to D'Mall and Station 2. They offer airport transfers, which is super convenient and reasonably priced. Plus, there are plenty of tricycles right outside the hotel, making it easy to get around.

What we love on this hotel are their pool, bfast buffet variety and most especially their separate toilet and bath and their bed! They also offer towel on their pool. Good thing also across the street there is a 711 and Metrobank for withdrawal of cash :) They also have 30mins complimentary kid play for everyday :) They also have WIFI connection. We were also entertained once we came for checkin. Few cons we saw are: They have no cabinet, their security deposit is P1500 per day, about 1km away from D’mall though they offer already a variety of food on their lobby. They charge also for their laundry bag though 2 initial bags are free. Overall, our experience is still great!

We were checked in an hour early. The hotel and our room were clean, the staff was friendly, and towels were changed daily. They also provide separate towels for the beach. Breakfast was a buffet style. We had no issues with hot water or water pressure. We enjoyed our stay at this hotel. Now, for the things we didn't like. There's a rooster next door at a local's house that loves to crow starting at 2 AM. I slept with earplugs, so the rooster didn't bother me too much. Sometimes there was noise from drilling and loud people on the street, but that's not the hotel's fault. The room was cozy, but the balcony and inside felt a bit cramped. Breakfast had fruits and a small selection of food. The breakfast could be upgraded to excellent if there was an egg station where you could get fresh omelets made. The bed linen was clean but outdated and pilled. We would still return and recommend this hotel.

Pros The hotel is in a great location. It is right on the beach. Restaurants, bars and stores were all right outside hotel. As you walk out of hotel, you will be bombarded with people selling you things: hair braiding, excursions, seafood, tattoos, bracelets, massages… etc but that’s everywhere on the beach. Hotel staff were great!  They surprised my son with a birthday song and a treat on his birthday. We didn’t even let them know it was his birthday, so they must have noticed on his passport. They took photos and videos of this nice surprise. Upon checkout, hotel also gave us personalize bracelets as thank you gifts. Swimming pool was nice and not too busy. Breakfast was not bad. Lots of options. Great breakfast view.  Cons Our room was really far. We booked for 4 but only had 2 towels in the room. Had to request for more towels as well as hand towels and floor towels as the room don’t have any. Water pressure was terrible. At some point, there was no water coming out of the faucet at all. We couldn’t shower or wash our hands. Staff were super accommodating and changed our room the next day. 2nd room was closer and much newer looking. Water pressure was good but now wifi was not working.

The whole place was simple, but still feels like a classy hotel somehow. The room wasn't big but spacious enough for a family. The ambiance is good, won't feel like a cheap hotel, yet the price is very affordable. The beds are relaxing. The whole place is clean especially the rooms. The location wasn't beach side but it's very near the beach and accessible to it, also to stores near by, especially the D'mall. It's easy to take a local ride because it's in the center, and front of the road. The breakfast has few choices, but it was fair enough for us. It was decent and usual Filipino breakfast which we really like. The staffs are nice and hospitable. We didn't encounter any staff that has bad attitude, they were really nice which makes me always leave a tip for them, even for the FO personnel. This place will definitely be one of our choices again whenever we come back to Boracay. Thank you!

One of the best hotels on the island. A luxurious Presidential Suite with its own pool. The bed was very dry, and the staff cleaned it several times a day, turned it down, and thoughtfully placed a bottle of water and cookies for evening tea on the nightstands. The breakfasts were beyond praise – everything was à la carte, you order it, and it was personally prepared for you. They also brought a basket with hot bread, ham, cheese, and fruit. Everything was very personal – each guest was greeted by name, which was a great touch! The only downside was the sea – it was blooming and green during our stay. But I will definitely return here, as the atmosphere here is completely relaxing and private!

This hotel is awesome! It truly felt like visiting grandma for summer vacation, bringing back so much nostalgia. We were very comfortable staying here. We initially stayed in a deluxe room – it was spacious and super! The decor was a bit old-fashioned, but that wasn't a drawback; it was part of its charm. Later, we extended our stay and moved to a standard room, which was also comfortable. It was smaller, of course, but had a more modern interior. However, it didn't have a fridge, which was a downside. All the rooms absolutely match the photos on the website. There's a wardrobe, hangers – everything you need to store your personal belongings. The room was very clean, which is always important to me, especially during long stays. Housekeeping and linen/towel changes are available upon request. The breakfasts were wonderful, hearty, and offered a great selection to suit all tastes. The staff were simply lovely, so kind and ready to help with any questions. The location is also excellent, tucked away (in the middle of the island) at the border of Stations 1 and 2 – you couldn't ask for a more convenient spot; everything is nearby, and there's no noise. Just a heads-up: the hotel doesn't provide tea/coffee sachets or shampoo/toothbrushes, only soap. You'll need to bring all of that with you, especially tea! Finding tea in the Philippines is generally a struggle – it's very expensive in stores and there's not much selection; they even sell it individually! 🙈 Next time I visit this country, I'll definitely bring my own. I've attached photos of the standard room and the breakfasts. I didn't even photograph the deluxe. It's great that all rooms have a balcony or terrace with a table and chairs. The only thing missing for my complete happiness was a kitchen where I could occasionally cook something when I got tired of restaurant food. In short, your place is beautiful, cozy, green, and soulful. Thank you very much for your hospitality!

The hotel is in a good localization because just few meters from Dmall, place with supermarket, restaurant, massage and stores. Also from a good part of the beach. The staffs are gentle, always smiling. But they could be more pro active saying that the transfer to go back to airport MUST to be request one day before that you are leaving the hotel, even when your fly is at night. They asked to us to find a way back to airport by yourselves. Sometimes the staff forgot to replace face towel the good part they didn't in the last day of check out, because probably the hotel should ask as to pay for it.

Everything was excellent. The staff were friendly and responsive, always ready to help 😊. There's even a facility to dry clothes in the hallway, even if your room doesn't have a balcony. The cleaning was thorough, the sun loungers were good, and you could grab towels. Breakfasts offered a great variety, catering to all tastes. We received a welcome drink and beads upon arrival, and they allowed us to check in a bit early. The room had a stylish design and even came with a drip coffee maker. P.s. For Russian speakers, we didn't notice any prejudiced treatment (as mentioned in one of the reviews) towards those who speak Russian. Perhaps that guest was unreasonable, or there was a misunderstanding.

The service and front desk staff were incredibly friendly and helpful; we were even offered a welcome drink upon arrival. The breakfast selection was excellent, and we enjoyed trying different options each day. On our last day, we had an early departure and couldn't make the regular breakfast, but they thoughtfully prepared a takeaway breakfast for us. The hotel also offers a very convenient laundry service; we'd drop off our clothes at the front desk before heading out in the morning and pick them up before returning to our room in the evening. The location is great – not far from the main street, yet tucked away in an alley, making it quite quiet.

Best thing about this is that the best live music bar in Boracay is right on the doorstep - great pub food, great band every night, and reasonable prices. The room was spacious and comfortable, kinda rustic but everything worked. Sheets and towels were clean but not always fresh, check this. I thought it had a pool when I booked but it doesn't, so In terms of value it is probably a little over-priced. An enjoyable stay nonetheless.

Our recent stay at Astoria Boracay was a fantastic experience for our family trip! From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel incredibly welcome and went out of their way to accommodate us. The location is unbeatable—right on Station 1's beautiful beachfront, which is perfect for families looking to avoid the more crowded areas of Boracay. The rooms were modern, spacious, and very clean. They had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable, and we loved the beach-inspired decor that felt cozy and tropical. The pool area was another highlight for the kids, and there were plenty of lounge chairs for us to relax while they enjoyed the water. Breakfast was a treat every morning with a great selection of local and international dishes that catered to all our tastes. The on-site restaurant also had a fantastic menu for lunch and dinner, with dishes that gave us a taste of the local flavors as well as family-friendly options. Another plus is the easy access to nearby shops and dining options along the beach path, so we could explore the island without any hassle. Astoria Boracay is truly an ideal choice for families looking for a mix of relaxation and adventure. We highly recommend it and can’t wait for our next trip back! :)

Great hotel with excellent service, perfect location in the center of Station 2. Lots of restaurants and shops nearby, own beach are with sun beds. I'd recommend taking 2nd or higher floor rooms, as ground floor with doors opening to the pool get little sunshine and feel very humid. Perfect service, amazing team that really takes care of the guests. Highly recommend. Aslo recommend booking a hotel transfer, it's so fast and efficient, they pick you closer to the return flight so you don't have to spend hours in that hangar of an airport.

We stayed here for three nights. The first room we stayed didn’t have a window (room 106). As I am claustrophobic, I asked for a different room, the front desk staff kindly accommodated my need from the second day on. It seems that they have several rooms that don’t have a window, so if you are like me, please let them know in advance. The location is convenient as it’s close to station 2. While the majority of station 1 hotels are more secluded and quiet, this hotel was never so as it’s located at the main boat station and there are tons of tourists hanging around the property. There are lounge chairs, but those are often used by the tourists who were waiting for their boat to arrive. The breakfast was mixture of Filipino and Chinese food. Different selection everyday but still ok. The room was dated but we appreciated the fridge and air conditioner. The beach mats and towels were available for free and that was also nice. The best thing about this hotel was the staff! They tried their best to accommodate the guests’ needs. We enjoyed our stay because of them.

The hotel environment is great, and it offers good value for money. The cleaning staff are incredibly diligent; they even tidied up our room again just two hours after we'd left. However, the restaurant experience was disappointing. The cashier was unenthusiastic and had a disdainful attitude. The bill was 421 yuan, and even after I gave 500 yuan, they didn't bother to give me change. Most of the staff are locals from the island, and their English pronunciation isn't standard.

I enjoyed my stay in Boracay Travelodge especially the warmth greetings of their staff. I have many requests especially the room cleaning and they also follow. I have only one comment on our shower, it needs to be fixed or changed because it's not giving a lot of shower. There is no wifi also on the whole building. It is best because we save a lot coz it's cheaper. There is a mini store on the lobby, free hot and cold water in a dispenser, there is a security and especially it is a walking distance to the beachfront.
