Holy Week Philippines: Dates, Traditions and Travel Guide

Author's Profile Picture
Holy Week

Holy Week is one of the most important religious periods in the Philippines. Many Filipinos spend this time praying, attending church, and being with family. It is also one of the busiest travel seasons of the year, as many people leave the city for a short holiday. If you plan to travel during Holy Week, it is helpful to know what to expect and prepare your trip early.

❤️ Pro Tip: When planning your trip, book your hotels on Trip.com early to secure better prices and more room choices.

What is Holy Week?

Holy Week

Holy Week is the week before Easter Sunday and remembers the final days of Jesus Christ’s life. In the Philippines, many Filipinos attend church services, join religious traditions, and spend time reflecting with family. It is also one of the busiest travel periods of the year as many people return to their home provinces.

What Happens

The most solemn day. Processions are held and the Seven Last Words reflection is often broadcast from 12 PM to 3 PM.

Black Saturday

A quiet day of prayer and reflection before Easter.

Easter Sunday

Celebration of the resurrection of Jesus. Many churches hold the Salubong early in the morning.

Pabasa

A continuous chanting of the life of Jesus, often held in communities during Holy Week.

Popular Holy Week Traditions

Holy Week

During Holy Week, you may see many traditions across the Philippines. These practices show the strong faith and community spirit of many Filipinos.

  • Visita Iglesia: Families or groups visit several churches in one evening to pray, usually on Holy Thursday.
  • Processions: Many towns hold large religious processions, especially on Good Friday. People walk through the streets carrying statues of saints and scenes from the life of Jesus. The Santo Entierro, a statue of the dead Christ placed in a glass casket, is often the highlight.
  • Pabasa: Communities hold the Pabasa, a continuous chanting of the Pasyón, which tells the story of Jesus’ life and sacrifice. It may last for many hours or even days.
  • Senakulo: Some towns perform a Senakulo, a live street play that shows the Passion of Christ. These performances can draw large crowds.
  • Fasting and Simple Meals: Many Filipinos avoid meat on Good Friday and eat simple food such as fish, vegetables, or traditional snacks like biko, suman, and binignit.
  • Quiet Reflection: Some families stay at home, pray together, or watch religious programs on TV.

Different regions celebrate Holy Week in their own way, so travelers may experience different traditions depending on where they visit.

🏨 Pro Tip: Book your hotel early during Holy Week, as many popular destinations can fill up quickly during this busy travel period.

Why Filipinos Travel During Holy Week

Holy Week gives many Filipinos several days off from work and school, so it becomes one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

  • Returning to hometowns
Many people travel back to their provinces to spend time with family and attend church activities together.
  • Family vacations
Some families plan short trips to popular beach destinations like Boracay, Cebu, and Bohol.
  • Taking a break from the city
Travelers from busy cities like Manila often head to cooler places such as Baguio or Sagada to relax.
  • Time for reflection and rest
Others choose quiet places where they can pray, attend church events, and reflect during the Holy Week period.
💡 Travel Tip: The biggest travel rush is on Holy Wednesday and Maundy Thursday, with many people returning on Easter Sunday or Monday. Expect heavy traffic and crowded terminals.

We had an overall wonderful experience at Henann Crystal Sands Resort. The hotel was very clean, and the staff were incredibly friendly, polite, and always smiling. Everyone was genuinely helpful, which made our stay even more enjoyable. The airport transfer was very smooth, and the team helped us with our luggage from start to finish. Early check-in was kindly permitted, which was extremely helpful as we were traveling with our 11-month-old baby. The baby cot provided was the cleanest we have ever seen, which gave us great peace of mind. Breakfast was decent with a good variety, and the seafood buffet dinner was absolutely amazing—we enjoyed it twice during our one-week stay. The pool bar had a great atmosphere, and the food there was also very good. The sky pool offered a beautiful view, especially at sunset, and was one of the highlights of the resort. The massage service was excellent. We tried both the poolside massage and the in-room massage, and both were very relaxing and professionally done. The beach in front of the hotel was the cleanest and whitest we saw on the island, making it perfect for relaxing and enjoying the sea. We would definitely stay at Henann Crystal Sands again on our next trip to Boracay and highly recommend it, especially for families with young children.

We had a wonderful stay and truly appreciate the excellent service from all the staff. Everyone was very kind, attentive, and genuinely helpful throughout our visit. During our stay, my son got sick, and the staff went above and beyond to take extra care of us. Their support and concern made a stressful situation much more manageable, and we are very grateful for that. The buffet was also great, with a good selection including vegan options, which we really appreciated. It made dining easy and enjoyable for our family. My child also had a fantastic time at the pool—it was definitely one of the highlights of our stay! Overall, we had a very positive experience and would gladly recommend this hotel.

Our 4-day, 3-night stay at Henann Palm Beach Resort was a great experience. The staff were very friendly, welcoming, and always ready to help. The service was excellent and the rooms were clean and comfortable. The amenities were well-maintained, especially the swimming pools and the easy access to the beach. The only problem for me is the water is so much cold. I hope they provide a heater as well in the pool. The breakfast buffet had a good variety of food and everything was delicious. Especially the egg station, ordered every motning cheese omelete but I forgot the chef's name. Overall, it was a relaxing stay and I would definitely recommend this resort when visiting Boracay. 🌴

Balinghai Beach Boracay Island|2.55km from city center
Mövenpick Resort & Spa Boracay, along with Shangri-La and Crimson, boasts an exclusive white sand beach. The main advantage is the peace and quiet, allowing guests to fully unwind and enjoy a truly relaxing 'lie-flat' vacation. The downside is its somewhat remote location. While you can book the hotel's shuttle service for transport, the frequency is limited. **Area:** Not particularly large, centered around the pool, with the beach accessible directly from the pool area. **Rooms:** Considering the room quality and size, they don't quite justify the price. They're comparable to blue-ocean hotels but significantly more expensive, and the overall hotel area is smaller, making it poor value for money. Its main selling point is undoubtedly the private beach. Near the Crimson area, there are reefs where you can try snorkeling. There are fish, though nothing large, and I even saw a moray eel – a nice little activity you can enjoy without having to go out on a boat. There are private small boats for rent at 300 pesos, which are great for a ride, and watching the sunset from the sea is absolutely stunning; the ocean here is incredibly beautiful. In the afternoon, there are often some dance activities on the beach that you can join, and from 3-4 PM, the restaurant offers afternoon tea, perfect for re-energizing before continuing your water activities.

The Worst Hotel Experience I Have Ever Had I have stayed in countless hotels and resorts around the world, but this was by far the worst experience I have ever had. Our company booked six rooms for a team-building trip. Since our staff were arriving at different times, we registered five different employee names so each person could check in when they arrived. However, when we arrived at the resort, the staff said that all six rooms were somehow registered under the first name from Room 1, and they refused to let anyone check in unless that specific person arrived first. This made absolutely no sense. The person who paid for the booking was present, and we clearly showed the Trip.com app, the official voucher, and the names of all employees staying in the rooms. Despite all of this, the staff repeatedly said check-in was impossible. What makes this even worse is that there was absolutely no notice anywhere saying that the first guest must arrive before anyone else can check in. Instead of helping us solve the problem, the staff simply told us to wait in the lobby indefinitely with no solution. I have lived in the Philippines for many years and have stayed many times at resorts in Bohol and Boracay, including several Henann Resorts. I have also traveled to many countries. However, I have never experienced such rigid, unhelpful, and unprofessional service. To make matters worse, no manager came out to assist us, even after we asked multiple times. For a resort that claims to offer quality hospitality, this level of service is completely unacceptable and honestly below even a one-star standard. This experience was extremely disappointing and frustrating. I would strongly recommend future guests double-check their booking policies before staying here.

Wow! What an amazing place❤️ From the moment I landed at the hotel, all the staff was friendly, welcoming and helpful. The hotel is clean, the rooms are spacious, comfortable and quiet. The restaurant had amazing food all throughout the day. The buffet dinner with live music was totally worth it after a busy day in the pool or at the beach. I will definitely come back here again. I want to give a special thank you to Nick, Kenneth, Gino, Arjay, Lixander and Alex. These staff members helped make my stay memorable in various ways from day 1 to when I left. Thank you.

We stayed in Boracay for 8 days, and Paradise Garden Resort was the third hotel we checked into during the trip. Surprisingly, among all the hotels we stayed at, Paradise Garden was one of the more affordable ones yet it ended up giving us one of the best overall experiences. We’re currently staying at Azalea Hotels & Residences Boracay, which has a higher rate and supposedly more premium services, but honestly, Paradise Garden stood out so much more because of how consistent and exceptional their service was. From the moment we arrived, the experience already felt smooth and welcoming. The lobby had plenty of seating for guests checking in and out, which was a huge relief especially after being out in the heat. Check-in was hassle-free, and we were even allowed to check in earlier than the standard 2 PM time. Someone also personally assisted us to our room which makes sense because the property itself is huge. At first, I thought we wouldn’t even use the pools because, well, you’re already in Boracay. But surprisingly, we still enjoyed them a lot. The pools were clean, well-maintained, and not a hassle to use at all. The resort itself definitely shows its age, and you can tell it has been operating for a long time, but despite that, the service remained exceptional. The staff were consistently courteous and accommodating. I also loved that they had a beachfront area exclusively for Paradise Garden guests. We were able to borrow beach towels for free, and the seating area in front was actually really nice. There were also thoughtful extras like live band performances, massage services by the beach, and even a pool area with a functioning open bar not just something “for display,” but something guests could genuinely enjoy. The room itself was very clean, and the bed was incredibly comfortable. I’m very particular about beds and sheets when staying at hotels, and I honestly slept so well there. Our experience was so good that I genuinely wished we had stayed there for three days instead of just one night. Even checking out was seamless. No issues, no stress just consistently good service from start to finish. That’s probably the best way I can describe Paradise Garden: consistent. Out of the four hotels we stayed at during this Boracay trip, Paradise Garden is honestly the one I would choose to return to. For me, it’s such an underrated hidden gem in Boracay.

Pros: Excellent location right by S3 beach; most staff were good, and service was decent. Facilities are a bit old but fully functional. Cons: Room amenities are dated, and the door was loose. Breakfast selection was limited, and the taste was average. Housekeeping was sometimes superficial; they occasionally didn't change the sheets or replenish toothbrushes, and there were no slippers in the room. Overall, a good experience and great value for money!

I can’t say enough nice things about this hotel. I was due to stay for 1 week but due to the 2 typhoons hitting my next 2 islands badly, I decided to extend my stay up to 3 weeks. My pool view room was great. Purified water in my room daily. Complimentary swimwear drying if needed, microwave and fridge, kettle etc. the location is fantastic, on station 3, straight out onto the beach in the hub of everything but also quiet to sleep at night. The beach and water was particularly nice right outside. After the typhoons, some debris got washed up onto the beach for a couple of days but everyone pitched in and cleaned it straight away. The very best thing about this hotel though is the staff. They are so incredibly friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much bother and theres no agenda either, not looking for tips but grateful if you give them one. They knew my name, my room number, went out of the way to check I was ok. The pools and the whole hotel were constantly cleaned. I actually cried when I had to leave. The staff even gathered in reception to see me off.It felt like home & I will go back again one day soon!

PERFECT FOR PEOPLE WORKING REMOTELY! 60-75MPBS CLEANLINESS – Housekeeping cleans the room daily, although the floor mat and bedding may not always be replaced after every cleaning. They change the towels, toiletries, and bottled water register. LOCATION – 15 minutes drive from the main area, but the hotel offers free shuttle service to/from Station 2 Jollibee D’Mall every 30 minutes. During drop-off, you can request to be dropped along the way just inform the driver. If you prefer quieter and less crowded beach area just stay in Savoy which we personally loved because it was clean and peaceful. Walking there takes around 5minutes or less and I think Belmont is closer to the beach area. The only issue is walking to the beach may not be PWD or senior-friendly, so it’s better to request assistance from the front desk for a ride to the beach coast area. SERVICE – 1000000/10! The staff were incredibly accommodating, warm, and friendly throughout our stay. AMENITIES – Great pool, excellent gym area, and I absolutely loved their breakfast selection. The WiFi was also reliable and fast — we never encountered any internet issues during our stay.

The in-room amenities are pretty standard, similar to what you'd find in a 1000+ RMB per night hotel back home – nothing special, nothing bad, just average. The 2300 RMB per night price mainly covers the hotel's private beach, services (kids' club, with daily craft classes and occasional pool parties), and the public facilities (three pools, including a kids' pool). We stayed for 10 nights, and when we checked out, they provided complimentary transfer to the airport (car + speedboat + car). We only had to pay the government's environmental protection fee and island entry fee ourselves. This service was absolutely excellent! When you check out, you might want to ask if they can offer this service. If it's your first time staying and you want an airport pick-up, I recommend contacting the hotel directly, as the airport transfer fee through Ctrip for this hotel is very expensive. The hotel is next door to the Movenpick Resort, and then next to that is the Shangri-La Hotel. You might want to compare prices.

After checking in we have informed front desk about the air condition not working. Took couple of hours to fix the problem. We request compensation due to air conditioning not working on the day of arrival and overnight on the next day. But they only offered us room transfer which would have been inconvenient with us since we have a lot to things to pack especially while traveling with two kids. With this weather air conditioning is essential for our kids comfort. We weren't able to sleep due to this problem.

Airport transfers to and from Cardiff were seamless. After exiting the arrivals hall, turn right into the covered corridor and wait for your arrival with a sign. The service was very attentive; every staff member greeted us proactively. Room service was available. The room was fantastic, with toilets and showers on both floors, and a small outdoor pool. However! A word of caution: this room type is on the third floor, and there is no elevator. Traveling with elderly people should be approached with caution. Climbing stairs every day is exhausting, and they may not want to leave the house.

You can tell they truly value their reputation. Just a heads-up: payment at the hotel is cash-only. The hotel's location is absolutely perfect, beyond words. It's right in the heart of all the entertainment and leisure spots, and only a 5-minute walk to the sea. I do want to mention one significant drawback: there was a lot of noise from equipment operating near our room, which was quite unpleasant. You do get used to it over time and eventually tune it out, but it might be an important consideration for some. In the last few days of our stay, the hot water started to disappear, becoming only lukewarm, and this issue couldn't be resolved. Also, the Wi-Fi suddenly stopped working completely on our last night (Friday to Saturday) without any explanation, so we had to use mobile internet until check-out. For us, the breakfasts were a notable downside – the selection of dishes was extremely limited. Coffee was only served from a pot (likely instant), and coffee from the machine was an extra charge. However, after I brought this up, the issue with the coffee machine was resolved. For the next six breakfasts, they made complimentary machine coffee for my partner and me. Special thanks to the entire hotel team and for the lovely daily notes in our room that brightened our mood and made our vacation even more enjoyable!

The housekeeping team was excellent—very attentive and professional. The location is great, close to the beach and all major attractions, which made getting around very convenient. The room was spacious and very clean. However, the pillows were old and uncomfortable, and while the bed was acceptable, it wasn’t particularly comfortable. Breakfast was satisfactory overall. The mango vinegar dressing was delicious, and the omelets and scrambled eggs were well prepared. Unfortunately, the cheese was of poor quality. Service throughout the hotel was good.

The place is just right (ground floor) for seniors like us. The room is nice and clean. However, the water has a bad smell and when reported, maintenance personnel checked it right away. After we let the faucet running for an hour or two as advised by the maintenance personnel, the problem was solved. We will stay at this place should we decide to go back to Boracay in the near future.

We just got back from the paradise island of Boracay! It's the best place on Earth! We spent a long time choosing a hotel and made the perfect choice with One Crescent Hotel 🥰👌. It's located in a quiet, cozy spot, surrounded by lots of trees and greenery. A charming path leads to the hotel, and I absolutely loved walking this route to the beach, past the church. The walk to the sea is very convenient, just 5 minutes, and the best part is that we arrived right at Boracay Island's main attraction – Willy's Rock. It's the most beautiful place on White Beach 😍👍, with the softest white sand and incredibly clear, blue sea ❤️. We really loved the hotel. It's a small, 4-story building, with the reception on the ground floor. It’s a quiet and cozy place with incredibly kind and attentive staff who always seem to know what guests need and provide it with maximum convenience and smiles! We especially grew fond of the hotel's administrator, a woman named Ruby. She is so attentive, caring, and kind; she even helped my husband organize my birthday, and it was the best day ever!!! This sweet lady is the heart and soul of this hotel, and our stay was made extra special because of her. We truly felt at home. Breakfasts at the hotel are à la carte, with Filipino, European, and continental options. The portions are generous, we were never hungry! You can also order breakfast to your room. The bed was comfortable, with good bedding and nice white towels (the beach towels were also very decent). There’s a balcony, a fridge, always hot water, a TV where you can connect your phone to watch whatever you want, and a smart speaker. You can also send clothes for laundry. The hotel provides beach mats, which is very convenient since there are hardly any sun loungers on the beach. We are really looking forward to returning and will definitely choose this cozy hotel again!!! I highly recommend it; it’s an excellent choice – great value for money, quality, location, and of course, the wonderful people who work there. We already miss you all so much! ❤️

Pros: The hotel boasts an excellent beach with its own exclusive area, just a meter away. Sun loungers are provided for hotel guests. The location is superb: there are restaurants, cafes, and supermarkets all within 500 meters. Food: The hotel has a restaurant that serves delicious and affordable meals (seafood pasta around 700 pesos, local beer 150 pesos for 0.3L). There's also live music in the restaurant. Room: The room was spacious, but the bed was a bit small and creaky. The air conditioning in our room was very noisy, so we asked to change rooms and the staff were very accommodating, moving us without any issues. The hotel also offers massages, entertainment, excursions, and a fire show in the evening. The staff are excellent, friendly, and kind. I would definitely return.

The staff here are absolutely wonderful, beyond praise. However, everything else leaves a lot to be desired. The hotel is in dire need of renovation. The breakfasts are sparse; there weren't enough vegetables or sweets (only pancakes). The meat wasn't great either. If you have luggage, make sure to let the staff know in advance so they can help you, as tuk-tuks don't go all the way to the hotel – it's about a 10-minute walk from the main road. They do have their own sun loungers on the beach. During our stay, the beach had a lot of algae, so we ended up swimming elsewhere. In the evenings, there's live music, which isn't suitable for early sleepers as it's quite loud. The rooms are damp and humid, and our clothes took a long time to dry.

The room was immaculately clean, stylishly designed, and equipped with all the comforts I could ask for. Whether it was the front desk, housekeeping, or restaurant staff, everyone went above and beyond to ensure my experience was perfect. They made me feel like a valued guest rather than just a visitor. The hotel’s facilities were top-notch — from the well-maintained fitness center to the cozy lounge and delightful dining options. Mixed feelings about the hotel, it was my second time and fifth hotel on the island. It's a fine hotel but you wont feel pampered. +Perfect location if you want to stay at station 1, about 20 min walk to all the fun. The room is huge, clean and beautiful. They left good night wishes and cookies in the room every night which was a very nice touch. - check out at 11; the fruit at breakfast was given out in portions rather than buffet style which I found really strange and cheap for this type of hotel. There was no water dispencer and the water wasnt offered at the beach as well as at the restaurant when I stayed there for lunch and dinner. Even though it's offered in all the restaurants on the island and even cheaper hotels have water dispensers in the halls or rooms.

This hotel is awesome! It truly felt like visiting grandma for summer vacation, bringing back so much nostalgia. We were very comfortable staying here. We initially stayed in a deluxe room – it was spacious and super! The decor was a bit old-fashioned, but that wasn't a drawback; it was part of its charm. Later, we extended our stay and moved to a standard room, which was also comfortable. It was smaller, of course, but had a more modern interior. However, it didn't have a fridge, which was a downside. All the rooms absolutely match the photos on the website. There's a wardrobe, hangers – everything you need to store your personal belongings. The room was very clean, which is always important to me, especially during long stays. Housekeeping and linen/towel changes are available upon request. The breakfasts were wonderful, hearty, and offered a great selection to suit all tastes. The staff were simply lovely, so kind and ready to help with any questions. The location is also excellent, tucked away (in the middle of the island) at the border of Stations 1 and 2 – you couldn't ask for a more convenient spot; everything is nearby, and there's no noise. Just a heads-up: the hotel doesn't provide tea/coffee sachets or shampoo/toothbrushes, only soap. You'll need to bring all of that with you, especially tea! Finding tea in the Philippines is generally a struggle – it's very expensive in stores and there's not much selection; they even sell it individually! 🙈 Next time I visit this country, I'll definitely bring my own. I've attached photos of the standard room and the breakfasts. I didn't even photograph the deluxe. It's great that all rooms have a balcony or terrace with a table and chairs. The only thing missing for my complete happiness was a kitchen where I could occasionally cook something when I got tired of restaurant food. In short, your place is beautiful, cozy, green, and soulful. Thank you very much for your hospitality!

I had a pleasant stay at Boracay Holiday Resort. The location is excellent — Boracay Beach is just a 5-minute walk away, and there are plenty of nearby establishments for food, drinks, and essentials. The staff provided great service, and the cleanliness and amenities were good overall . One thing worth mentioning is that I lost my eyeglasses during my stay. I’m not sure where it happened, but I wasn’t able to recover them. Aside from that, everything else went smoothly and we still enjoyed our time at the resort. Overall, it was a good experience, and I appreciate the friendly staff, convenient location, and the accessibility to many establishments.

We were checked in an hour early. The hotel and our room were clean, the staff was friendly, and towels were changed daily. They also provide separate towels for the beach. Breakfast was a buffet style. We had no issues with hot water or water pressure. We enjoyed our stay at this hotel. Now, for the things we didn't like. There's a rooster next door at a local's house that loves to crow starting at 2 AM. I slept with earplugs, so the rooster didn't bother me too much. Sometimes there was noise from drilling and loud people on the street, but that's not the hotel's fault. The room was cozy, but the balcony and inside felt a bit cramped. Breakfast had fruits and a small selection of food. The breakfast could be upgraded to excellent if there was an egg station where you could get fresh omelets made. The bed linen was clean but outdated and pilled. We would still return and recommend this hotel.

We had non refundable pre paid booking at Soleil de Boracay from 20th to 24th Feb 2026 to celebrate our 47th marriage anniversary. Unfortunately my husband fell ill in January and had to undergo a heart procedure in Feb . We requested trip.com as well as Soleil de Boracay to refund the booking amount and also submitted the medical papers as required. But trip.com and Soleil de Boracay kept passing the buck to each other saying we have to contact the other one for refund. Really disgusted with both for such behaviour. They could have kept the pre paid booking amount for future bookings as this was a genuine distress case and not change of mind.

The location wasn't beach side but it's very near the beach and accessible to it, also to stores near by, especially the D'mall. It's easy to take a local ride because it's in the center, and front of the road. The breakfast has few choices, but it was fair enough for us. It was decent and usual Filipino breakfast which we really like. The staffs are nice and hospitable. We had an amazing time at the Asya Premier Suites in Boracay. The food, the Service, the staff, the Location,... Everything was well pleasing! It's located at the end of station 3 with a very nice and private beach area. The pool is located in the middle of the suites and is offering enough sunbeds for the ~20-25 suites. The staff was always very friendly and attentive. The food in the restaurant was good and the prices were also okay. The breakfast with the view of the ocean was really special. We stayed 4 nights in the presidential suite and the terrace with the private pool (with whirlpool feature) was impressive. The suite is really big, same for the comfortable bed and it was always very clean. Whenever we had a question or request, they were very fast with it. Another really good service was the daily free shuttle and pick up service at the D Mall. There was nothing to complain about, I can fully recommend the Asya Premier Suites if you want to have a unique and very private stay in Boracay, a bit off from the crowded main area at station 1 and 2. If you want to talk a walk along the beach front to station 1 or 2 it takes around 20-30mins.

The rooms are uniquely designed, and the spa is truly outstanding – one of the best I’ve experienced (and I’ve been to many!). It’s worth visiting for the spa alone. On the downside, the hotel falls short when it comes to services: there’s no jacuzzi or pool, the breakfast is quite limited, and there’s no room service or reception available after 10 PM.
