An Evening with Author Sarah Beth Durst in Conversation with Amanda Quain | Greater Pittsburgh Masonic Center
Jul 17, 2025 (UTC-5)
Pittsburgh
We are excited to welcome Sarah Beth Durst back to Pittsburgh on her tour for The Enchanted Greenhouse, the anticipated sequel to The Spelllshop. She will be joined in conversation by local author Amanda Quain. Following the talk, there will be time for Q&A and book signing. Details to note: General admission tickets do not include a copy of the book.Every VIP ticket includes one signed copy of the book.Tickets are non-refundable starting one week before the event (7/10 and later). If you are unable to attend the event and your ticket includes a book, we will hold the book for up to four weeks. After that, the book will be taken off hold and shelved. We will reach out to confirm which location you would like to pick up your book at or if you would like to have it shipped for $5.95.About the book: Brimming with love and magic, The Enchanted Greenhouse is a cozy fantasy romance about a librarian longing for connection, a timid gardener and a mystery to unveil. New York Times bestselling author Sarah Beth Durst invites you to her new standalone novel nestled on a far-away island brimming with singing flowers, honey cakes, and honeyed love. The hardcover edition features beautiful sprayed edges.
Terlu Perna broke the law because she was lonely. She cast a spell and created a magically sentient spider plant. As punishment, she was turned into a wooden statue and tucked away into an alcove in the North Reading Room of the Great Library of Alyssium.
This should have been the end of her story . . . Yet one day, Terlu wakes in the cold of winter on a nearly-deserted island full of hundreds of magical greenhouses. She’s starving and freezing, and the only other human on the island is a grumpy gardener. To her surprise, he offers Terlu a place to sleep, clean clothes, and freshly baked honey cakes—at least until she’s ready to sail home.
But Terlu can’t return home and doesn’t want to—the greenhouses are a dream come true, each more wondrous than the next. When she learns that the magic that sustains them is failing—causing the death of everything within them—Terlu knows she must help. Even if that means breaking the law again.
This time, though, she isn’t alone. Assisted by the gardener and a sentient rose, Terlu must unravel the secrets of a long-dead sorcerer if she wants to save the island—and have a fresh chance at happiness and love.
Funny, kind, and forgiving, The Enchanted Greenhouse is a story about giving second chances—to others and to yourself. About the author: Sarah Beth Durst is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of over twenty-five books for adults, teens, and kids, including cozy fantasy The Spellshop. She's been awarded the American Library Association's Alex Award, the Libby Book Award for Best Fantasy, and the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award. Several of her books have been optioned for film/television, including Drink Slay Love, which was made into a TV movie and was a question on Jeopardy! She lives in Stony Brook, New York, with her husband, her children, and her ill-mannered cat. Visit her at sarahbethdurst.com. About the conversation partner: AMANDA QUAIN is a writer, indie bookseller, and general life enthusiast. When she’s not shouting about her favorite new books, she loves theatre, baking, rock climbing, marching band, and the overall pursuit of adventure. If forced to choose, Amanda’s favorite Austen hero is Edward Ferrars, though she’ll always have a soft spot for Mr. Bingley. She lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with her husband and her cat, and is the author of three Jane Austen retellings for young adults, ACCOMPLISHED, GHOSTED, and DASHED.

Teaching Foundations (Northern California) | Head-Royce School
Jul 28, 2025 (UTC-7)
Oakland
The Teaching Foundations program is designed to support the growth and success of all teachers—particularly those in their early years at independent schools—by focusing on foundational areas of teaching. Teachers must be ready for new forms of learning, adopting and refining their curriculum and practice to respond to the ever changing demands while simultaneously developing a steadiness that promotes their own well-being and safeguards the social-emotional needs of their students.
Sessions are organized around the following topics: identity and culture (self, school, and learning environment); lesson design and pedagogy; building successful professional relationships; communication and feedback; and sustaining a career in teaching.
Led by master teachers, administrators, and guest presenters, this respected program provides participants with personalized attention and specific instruction that is adaptable for all grade levels. Emphasis is placed on modeling and using inclusive practices for lesson planning, classroom management, and assessment, as well as on developing time management and communication skills, cultural humility, and confidence as an advisor and leader.
