THE SON OF THE WHITE MARE + THE GENESIS (US THEATRICAL PREMIERE!) | Philosophical Research Society

May 4, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
City of Los Angeles
Arts
Film
The Philosophical Research Society's 7th House Screenings is proud to present a retrospective of mindblowing films by the Hungarian animation master Marcell Jankovics (1941-2021). Considered Hungary's answer to Walt Disney and winner of both an Oscar and Palme D'Or for his short films ( Sisyphus and The Struggle , respectively) Jankovics directed the country's first animated feature film ( János Vitéz , 1973) before creating his masterpiece and inarguably the most psychedelic animated film of all time – The Son of the White Mare (1981) . His brilliant career, with its focus on myths and folktales, culminated with his magnum opus The Tragedy of Man (2011). Nearly 30 years in the making, the epic spans thousands of years, following the archetypal Adam creation myth through the epochs, each in a different animation style – all gorgeously hand drawn. Join us on three Sundays (April 27th, May 4th, and May 11th) to experience Jankovics' artistic genius on the big screen, including the LA theatrical premiere of The Tragedy of Man and the US theatrical premiere of The Genesis (1989), a segment from his unfinished Biblical epic! 25% Off Series Passes Available Here! THE SON OF THE WHITE MARE "The Greatest Psychedelic Animated Movie Ever Made."- Eric Kohn, IndieWire "This should-be classic, with its kaleidoscopic animation and vibrant mythos, is a unique contribution to the animated canon." - Maya Phillips, The New York Times "For years it has lurked underground, in the form of ripped discs and fuzzy YouTube uploads, sans subtitles. But at long last, ye patient seekers, a 4K restoration has risen. May your psyches never recover." - Jason Kehe, Wired One of the great psychedelic masterpieces of world animation , SON OF THE WHITE MARE is a swirling, color-mad maelstrom of mythic monsters and Scythian heroes, part-Nibelungenlied, part- Yellow Submarine , lit by jagged bolts of lightning and drenched in rivers of blue, red, gold and green. A massive cosmic oak stands at the gates of the Underworld, holding seventy-seven dragons in its roots; to combat these monsters, a dazzling white mare goddess gives birth to three heroes – Treeshaker and his brothers – who embark on an epic journey to save the universe. Directed by Hungarian animator Marcell Jankovics (famed for his 1974 Oscar-nominated short Sisyphus ), Son of the White Mare has been restored in 4K using the original 35mm camera negative and sound elements by Arbelos in collaboration with the Hungarian National Film Institute's Film Archive. New 4k Restoration! Synopsis by Arbelos Films Dir. Marcell Jankovics, 1980, 86 mins, Unrated (Suitable for All Audiences), Hungary, Hungarian w/ English Subtitles, Digital. Special thanks to David Marriott and Ei Toshinari of Arbelos Films. Followed by THE GENESIS (1989) – U.S. Theatrical Premiere! In 1976, Jankovics was commissioned by Hungarian Television School TV to create a series of Biblical films. Initially envisioned as a 12 part series, which would adapt 8 stories from the Old Testament and four from the New Testament, the project soon transformed into what was to be a trilogy of theatrical films . In the hopes of wow'ing foreign backers and securing funds to complete the ambitious cinematic project in full, its producers funded the opening portion of the adaptation , THE GENESIS , developing the first chapters of the Book of Creation including the seven days of creation (brilliantly rendered with Jankovics' signature vibrancy and psychedelic symbolism), Adam and Eve, their apple-induced plummet into sin, and the story of Cain and Abel. The film was preceded by extraordinarily in-depth research into cultural and art history . While developing the screenplay, figure designs and imagery, Jankovics deliberately integrated elements of Judeo-Christian intellectual and cultural history into the film’s audiovisual fabric, so that several layers of meaning can prevail in the transposition of the action parts of the Scriptures. An example of this diverse illustrative referencing is that Adam is portrayed as a man from Mesopotamia and Eve as an Egyptian woman, thus allowing the two most important stations in the Jewish origin story, Babylon and Egypt representing the foundations of Jewish culture, to appear in them. Unfortunately, i n the end, the foreign producers withdrew further financing of the Bible film and the Jankovics' production company Pannónia Film was simply unable to arrange state or private backing for a project of this size, thus ultimately Jankovics’s Bible film remains an unfinished opus. However, finally released as a standalone film in 1989 , THE GENESIS stands as a remarkable work in Jankovics rich canon of mythos and folktale films – one that is finally being discovered by Western audiences and tonight we proudly present its US theatrical premiere! Dir. Marcell Jankovics, 1989, 27 mins, Hungary, Hungarian w/ English subtitles, Digital. Courtesy of National Film Institute of Hungary. Special thanks to Ágnes Iski of National Film Institute of Hungary Film Archive. Ticket Price: $12 (In-Person Only Event) Please email events@prs.org or phone 323-663-2167 with any questions ABOUT 7TH HOUSE SCREENINGS 7th House Screenings celebrates the magic of cinema (the 7th Art) and its power to draw community together. Just as astrology’s 7th house relates to connection and relationship, the hallowed ground of the movie house builds congregation – in a space where friends, loved ones, and strangers alike can commune, in hushed darkness, to experience the joy of discovery and transcendent power of collective imagination. Just as The Philosophical Research Society’s founder Manly P. Hall gathered a worldwide spectrum of philosophies, presenting curious seekers with a chance to find their truths and forge their own spiritual paths, 7th House screenings dedicatedly gathers an eclectic selection of films, offering audiences a expansive range of opportunity for cinematic inspiration and upliftment. New Yorker Executive Editor Michael Luo's book, Strangers in the Land: Exclusion, Belonging, and the Epic Story of the Chinese in America , couldn't come at a more important time. Michael Luo, the executive editor of the New Yorker and before that an award-winning journalist at the New York Times , has indeed written an epic story about the Chinese experience in America: it is a story filled with tragedy, injustice, violence, and racism that has persisted to our present moment. Luo's accounts of the Chinese immigration wave during the 19th century gold rush and beyond center on characters that create a sweeping and extraordinary history of Chinese settlement in America, and a story of what all immigrant groups have felt for centuries: exclusion, scapegoating, and often success in spite of all that. In conversation with National Book Award winner Charles Yu, author of the novel Interior Chinatown . Yu was also nominated for two Writers Guild awards for his work on Westworld , and has written for the New Yorker , the New York Times , Wired , and other publications. Limited parking onsite. COMMUNITY TOWN HALL: SAFE ROADS SAVE LIVES | Watts Labor Community Action Committee - Phoenix Hall

May 6, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
City of Los Angeles
Conferences
Our streets are deadly by design. Last year alone, car crashes have killed or severely injured more than 1,886 people in Los Angeles — many of them children. The traffic crashes in our communities are preventable, but our city is doing very little to keep our roads safe. The city's narrow focus on policing traffic stops does nothing to prevent the next crash from occurring. Without a new approach, crash deaths will continue to threaten our communities. We can change that. Join us in person on Tuesday, May 6, at 6 PM for an important discussion at our Community Town Hall: Safe Roads Save Lives at Phoenix Hall at the Watts Labor Community Action Committee in Watts, featuring special guest Deborah Archer, ACLU president. Together, we’ll talk about how to stop crashes from happening in the first place. *This town hall is hosted by Helen Jones in honor of Bruce Phillips. In other words, “things are pretty screwed up, but aren’t they always?” Spanning from the 1950’s to the 2000’s, Ed Helms steps in as unofficial history teacher for a deep dive into each decade’s craziest SNAFUs. From planting nukes on the moon to training felines as CIA spies to weaponizing the weather, this book will unpack the incredibly ironic decision-making and hilariously terrifying aftermath of America’s biggest mishaps. Filled with sharp humor, SNAFU is a wild ride through time that not only entertains but offers fresh insights that just might prevent history from repeating itself again and again. Peace Awareness: A Way of Tea, is an intimate two-hour tea gathering where you will be guided to a place of inner calm, allowing your heart to open as you connect with space, silence, stillness and breath. Limited to six people you will be served three different types of special artisanal teas (plus a healthy sweet treat). The teas will be prepared and served in a way that is consistent with the culture from which they originate. The alchemy of a tea gathering has a mystical ability to bring us to places of beauty within our being. Beauty softens our hearts and we become more attentive to the voice of our true Self. The word beauty and the word beatify, to bless, share the same origin. We will be creating space for the blessings that already are to enter and manifest in our lives. The tea gathering is both a time of quiet contemplation and a time to chat and share. It is said that when people gather for tea, good things happen. So please join us to experience pronoia where the world around you conspires to do you good. We will also be offering a choice of organic flower tisanes - a healthy and delicious alternative to those who wish to limit their caffeine.
