Get ready to be inspired by thought-provoking discussions and engaging workshops and activities. The two days will provide ample opportunities to connect, collaborate and continue to develop the roadmap for our collective work towards state and national basic income. Conference Schedule: Day 1 (June 17) at National Press Club from 8:30am-5:00pm Day 2 (June 18) at National Press Club from 9:00am-1:30pm Conference Highlights include: Key Focus Areas: Coalitions, Resiliency, and Base Building First Ever Conference Direct Action with Local DC Community Leaders Exclusive Sessions and Networking for Pilot Participants Creative Support, Energy, and Joy from Artists & Musicians June 18 Reception (5-7p) in Partnership with Economic Security Project HOTELS - Need to book accommodations for your trip to DC? Here's a link to the hotels that are supporting BIG this year with discounted rates. These offer a range of costs to support different travel budgets. We look forward to seeing you in June! A note about ticket prices: Our registration tiers reflect a sliding scale, a tool for establishing economic justice, introduced to us by our partners Point Source Youth. In this registration pricing system, everyone ultimately pays a similar percentage of their individual or organizational income to attend the conference. This scale is about recognizing the privileges and resources that make paid events disproportionately more accessible for groups with higher operating budgets and for individuals with greater wealth. We’re committed to making our conference as accessible as possible. We realize that individuals and communities experience systemic harm and marginalization as a result of long-standing inequities in the US, have been further exacerbated these past few years by a pandemic, political, financial and social upheaval, and a warming planet. We hope that this sliding scale facilitates increased access to this event and serves as an invitation to both think and speak deeply about the societal factors that create such stark disparities in wealth and resources in the US. We trust you to evaluate your ability to pay accordingly. Help us keep this conference as accessible as possible! Consider claiming one of the reduced price tickets ($50) if you: Can afford to do so. Are a paid community organizer. Are part of a small organization with less than 25 staff members. Are not experiencing financial hardship or housing instability. Consider claiming one of the half-price tickets ($150) if you: Can afford to do so. Can afford to take time off. Are a paid community organizer. Are part of a medium organization with 25-50 staff members. Have access to adequate financial support and stable housing. Consider claiming one of the full price tickets ($275) if you: Can afford to do so. Can afford to take time off. Are part of a large organization with more than 50 staff members. Work for an institution that will cover the cost of your registration Have a relatively high degree of earning power If the paid ticket prices impose too great a financial burden, please reach out to bigconference@incomemovment.com to explore other possibilities. The Program With its riveting score for electric violin, Ulysses Dove’s abstract Red Angels , created for the New York City Ballet in 1994 and making its D.C. premiere, will set your heart beating to the power and athleticism of its four dancers. Three men and two women moving to the passionate rhythms of two iconic Argentinian composers will transport you through a whirlwind of emotion and physical intensity that marks this world premiere from choreographer Jorge Amarante. Pools of light pinpointing discrete sequences of movement on an otherwise dark stage, Prufrock is one of two repertoire audience favorites to be included in the program. T.S. Eliot’s poem reveals itself in new and surprising ways while read aloud, accompanied by a stretch of the music, “hauntingly spare and percussive”, hailed by the Washington Post. In Songs by Cole , a jazz trio led by celebrated D.C. vocalist Lena Seikaly reimagines the melodies of America’s celebrated songwriter. Don’t miss this stylish collaboration between dancers and a jazz ensemble, set to Cole’s mysterious and propulsive melodies–a Chamber Dance audience favorite making its much-anticipated return. The company’s resident quartet will perform the D.C. premiere (not sure this is true yet) of Testimony by composer Charlton Singleton, which draws upon the musical traditions of the Gullah culture in the American Southeast's Lowcountry region. Testimony was composed for 50 For The Future: The Kronos Learning Repertoire. Red Angels choreographed by Ulysses Dove. Give yourself permission to step away, for a time, from the concerns of the world. Join us for an immersive walk along the Tregaron footpaths in the tradition of Shinrin-yoku or forest bathing, a Japanese wellness practice that helps individuals access the healing properties of nature. Research shows that extended contemplative time in nature calms the mind, promotes well-being, and cultivates a profound sense of belonging. The experience begins with an orientation to, and expression of gratitude for, the place where we will be spending our time. It includes warm-ups, centering, breathing exercises, a non-strenuous walk, and a brief time sitting. We conclude by reflecting on the experience and learning how the practice can be used in daily life. Our guide is Susan West Montgomery , a Kripalu Certified Outdoor Mindfulness Guide. She specializes in developing customized excursions at natural, historic, and cultural sites where she can deepen the mindfulness experience by layering in the nature-culture connection. Preparation: We will be walking on mulched trails and stone steps with some moderate hill climbing. Bring a jacket if light rain is expected.
