Feeding Ghosts: Tessa Hulls in conversation with Manjula Martin | Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History
Mar 16, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
Santa Cruz
Join writer Manjula Martin and artist/writer Tessa Hulls for an engaging conversation celebrating the release of Hulls's latest book, "Feeding Ghosts." This captivating graphic memoir delves into the lives of three generations of women: Sun Yi, Tessa's Chinese grandmother; Rose, Tessa's mother; and Tessa herself. Sun Yi, a former Shanghai journalist, experienced persecution and survival during the 1949 Communist victory. After escaping to Hong Kong with her daughter, Sun Yi penned a bestselling memoir before suffering a breakdown that led to her institutionalization.
Growing up, Tessa witnessed her mother's tireless care for Sun Yi, both grappling with the weight of her unexamined trauma and mental illness. Determined to break free from her mother's suffocating fear, Tessa embarked on a global journey, only to realize that her constant roaming felt more like running away than liberation. Ultimately, she decides to confront the historical legacy that shaped her family.
Through meticulous research and stunning illustrations, "Feeding Ghosts" presents Tessa Hulls's heartfelt homecoming, taking readers on a vivid exploration of her family's past against the backdrop of Chinese history. This poignant and inventive memoir reveals the enduring bond of love amidst fear and generational trauma.
Tessa Hulls, the featured artist in the 2019 MAH exhibition, "Guided by Ghosts," delves into her Chinese ancestry and the lost Chinatowns of Santa Cruz County. In conversation with writer and editor Manjula Martin, Tessa invites questions from the audience.
