Exhibitions
This unique exhibition showcases some of Vivienne Westwood's most recognisable works from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s, on loan to Barnard Castle Museum from private collector Peter Smithson. Shown in the Fashion and Textile Galleries, the exhibition explores the inspiration Westwood drew from sittings in paintings, portraiture and the materials and techniques used by artists, and examines how she reflected this in her work. The details in her work highlight pieces from the museum's collection, showing the inspiration the grand dame of fashion drew from the art and interiors of London's Wallace Collection, marking the midpoint of a particularly creative period for the designer. The museum has also worked with Northumbria University to bring Westwood's pattern-cutting techniques to life in a video, showing how she created her iconic garments, which continue to inspire creatives today. Experience the late designer's golden decade of design, with her garments displayed in never-before-exhibited museum objects.

Prepare to be entranced by the unique and mesmerising performance of 'The Slowest Wave' by the talented Vangeline of Vangeline Theatre based in New York City (NYC) at The Bowes Museum.Vangeline, Director of the New York Butoh Institute, is an accomplished and expert Butoh dancer from NYC who pioneered 'The Slowest Wave,' a revolutionary Butoh dance solo. This exceptional piece is a solo performance and a collaborative effort that marks the inception of the first neuroscientific study of Butoh, the innovative dance form originating in Japan in the 1950s. Developed in partnership with neuroscientists in 2022, 'The Slowest Wave' resulted in a groundbreaking neuroscientific study conducted in Houston, Texas, that recorded the brain activity of Butoh dancers for the first time in history. 'The Slowest Wave' delves deep into themes of stillness, nature, femininity, and the symbolism of female sensuality, drawing inspiration from the Delta brain wave, the slowest brain wave. Get ready to be captivated by the unique blend of dance and theatre in this one-of-a-kind performance. Don't miss out! This event includes BSL Interpreted Post-performance discussion and is free for ticket holders. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Age guideline: 14+ years The Slowest Wave was originally supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, the NSF IUCRC BRAIN Centre at the University of Houston, public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. This performance is commissioned and presented by Surface Area Dance Theatre and in partnership with The Bowes Museum. Supported using public funding by Arts Council England. Celebrate Durham author Pat Barker’s latest book, The Voyage Home, with this spell-binding dramatic reading from actors Patricia Jones and Lauren Waine accompanied by new folk music from the Shining Levels. The Voyage Home is set in the aftermath of the Trojan War. As Troy lies in smoking ruins and the victorious Greeks fill their ships with the spoils of battle, Pat Barker once again chronicles the experiences of the women, in this follow-up to her bestselling The Women of Troy and The Silence of the Girls. Pat Barker is an internationally acclaimed writer of 16 novels, including the Booker Prize-winning The Ghost Road, from the Regeneration Trilogy. She lives and works in Durham. This touring production will visit locations across County Durham in January: Blackhall Community Centre (22 Jan, 3pm), Lanchester Library (23 Jan, 5:30pm), Consett Heart (27 Jan, 7pm), TCR Hub, Barnard Castle (31 Jan, 6pm) This production is a Durham Book Festival commission, directed by Maria Crocker in partnership with Live Theatre, with support from Arts Council England. “A gritty Greek Game of Thrones . . . Agamemnon’s fateful return home reads like a blockbuster in the colourful third instalment of Barker’s women-centred Trojan wars series.” The Observer Information Source: New Writing North | eventbrite
