The City of Miami is offering 2023 Lifeguard Training at Jose Marti Pool. To become a lifeguard, candidates must pass a prerequisite test which includes swimming 300 yards continuously, demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates can use the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs, with hands placed under the armpits. A timed event must also be completed within 1 minute and 40 seconds. This includes swimming 20 yards, diving to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object, swimming 20 yards on the back while holding the object, and exiting the water without using a ladder or steps. Participants must be at least 16 years old and have 20/40 uncorrected vision in each eye. Normal hearing range is also required to ensure awareness of adults and children in life and health safety situations.
