The Magic of Books Monthly lecture series with William Kiesel Presented by PRS and Ouroboros Press In the PRS LIBRARY! Lecture One: Anatomy of the Book: Book Arts and Archives Q&A to follow the lecture Lecture Series Overview “Without books, there is no memory, and without memory, a culture cannot exist.” - Fernando Báez Join William Kiesel for a series of engaging talks on books and book culture surrounding the wisdom traditions housed in the PRS Library. Books are vessels of coagulated thought, distilled and filtered through the minds of authors, artists and adepts. Understanding the technology of the book and the laboratory of the library grants the seeker access to the esoteric secrets that can aid them on their journey of discovery. Presented in the peaceful environs of the PRS Library, William uses some of the bibilographic treasures of the library to illustrate multi-disciplined topics aimed at bringing deeper awareness into these important literary tools which have preserved the ageless wisdom for centuries. March 13 Anatomy of the Book: Book Arts and Archives As the digital age progresses the preservation and care of books takes on an ever-increasing importance for institutional and private libraries. Understanding the anatomy of the book is vital in any preservation efforts, by readers and conservationists alike. Using volumes in the PRS Library, William Kiesel will exhibit and explain the parts of the book and discuss the techniques, materials and practices surrounding books and book culture. Printing, binding, papermaking and other book arts will be presented as well as a discussion about the distinctions between the benefits of digital 'books' and traditional book technology. The talk offers insight into deeper understanding of books as objects of preservation and craft, while providing some excellent examples showing off resources the collection PRS Library offers its visitors and researchers. About William Kiesel William Kiesel has walked the path of esotericism for over 30 years. His practical experience and historical knowledge of occult literature and culture draws from such diverse disciplines as Hermeticism, Neoplatonism, Qabalah, Thelema, Alchemy, Rosicrucianism, Theosophy, and Ceremonial Magic. With his decades as an antiquarian bookseller, his training in letterpress printing and bookbinding, Kiesel brings his love of books and scholarship together as publisher at Ouroboros Press. About the Book: A comprehensive, authoritative biography of Civil Rights icon John Lewis, the conscience of the Congress, drawing on interviews with Lewis and approximately 275 others who knew him at various stages of his life, as well as never-before-used FBI files and documents. Born into poverty in rural Alabama, Lewis would become second only to Martin Luther King, Jr. in his contributions to the Civil Rights Movement. He was a Freedom Rider who helped to integrate bus stations in the South, a leader of the Nashville sit-in movement, the youngest speaker at the 1963 March on Washington, and the chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), which he made into one of the major civil rights organizations. He may be best remembered as the victim of a vicious beating by Alabama state troopers at the foot of the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, where he nearly died. Greenberg's biography traces Lewis's life through the post-Civil Rights years, when he headed the Voter Education Project, which enrolled millions of African American voters across the South. The book reveals the little-known story of his political ascent first locally in Atlanta, and then as a member of Congress. Tapped to be a part of the Democratic leadership in Congress, he earned respect on both sides of the aisle for the sacrifices he had made on behalf of nonviolent integration in the South and came to be known as the conscience of the Congress. He is the author or editor of several books on American history and politics including Nixon’s Shadow: The History of an Image and Republic of Spin: An Inside History of the American Presidency. Formerly acting editor of The New Republic and then a columnist for Slate, Greenberg now writes regularly for Politico, Liberties, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. His work has also been featured in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Foreign Affairs, The Wall Street Journal, and numerous academic journals. In support of this book, Greenberg won awards from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Cullman Center of the New York Public Library, and the Leon Levy Center for Biography. He holds a PhD in history from Columbia University and a BA from Yale and lives with his family in Manhattan. About the interlocuter: Todd S. Purdum is senior writer at POLITICO and a contributing editor at Vanity Fair. He was formerly with The New York Times, where he worked for 23 years, covering politics from city hall to the White House, and also serving as diplomatic correspondent and Los Angeles bureau chief. He is a native of Macomb, Ill., and a graduate of Princeton University. He is the author of Something Wonderful: Rodgers and Hammerstein's Broadway Revolution, and “An Idea Whose Time Has Come: Two Presidents, Two Parties and the Battle for the Civil Rights Act of 1964,” both published by Henry Holt & Co.
