Parmigianino: The Vision of Saint Jerome | The National Gallery

Dec 5, 2024–Mar 9, 2025 (UTC)ENDED
London
Exhibitions
Witness one of the most visionary artists of the Renaissance at work and rediscover his masterpiece that pushed art in a new direction. This exhibition explores the creation of Parmigianino’s 'The Madonna and Child with Saints', also known as ‘The Vision of Saint Jerome’. It returns to public display for the first time in 10 years following conservation. Born in the Northern Italian city of Parma, after which he was nicknamed, Girolamo Francesco Maria Mazzola (1503‒1540) was a child prodigy. He drew constantly. At age 21 he moved to Rome, where he impressed the Pope and was praised as a ‘Raphael reborn’. This altarpiece was his first major work there. In 1527, the Sack of Rome erupted around him while he finished the painting. According to legend, looting Imperial soldiers invading his studio were so amazed by it that they let him continue. Parmigianino made many drawings to work out his final composition. They range from velvety chalk studies to swirling pen and ink sketches. We reunite a variety of them with the painting for the first time. Part of our Bicentenary celebrations, this is a rare opportunity to encounter Parmigianino’s dynamic creative process.

Help shape our future. This display, in the newly reopened Reading Room, sets out the bold visions of five internationally acclaimed architectural teams to transform the British Museum's 'Western Range'. Comprising about a third of the Museum's galleries, the Western Range includes the Egyptian sculpture gallery, the Parthenon Sculptures and the Assyrian lion hunt reliefs – and we have shortlisted five architectural teams with whom we will work on an ambitious transformation of the gallery spaces, public areas and back-of-house facilities. We've invited the teams to present their visions with a focus on innovative ideas rather than a finished design, which you can view in this display. The teams must balance the Museum's architectural heritage with a forward-looking, visitor-focused experience.

This display celebrates the bequest of 10 drawings to the Museum, including works by Pablo Picasso and Bridget Riley, by art dealer Karsten Schubert. Born in Berlin, Schubert (1961–2019) was a long-term supporter of the British Museum. He established his first eponymous gallery in London in 1986 after working at the Lisson Gallery, London, where he became familiar with the avant-garde British art scene. Although he exhibited and sold modern and contemporary art, he had a deep knowledge of art history and museums were important to him throughout his life. Drawn from Schubert's own collection, the bequest entered the Museum following his death at the age of 57. It includes early 20th-century drawings by Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) and Piet Mondrian (1872–1944) as well as drawings by artists with whom Schubert worked and whose art he sold: Bridget Riley (born 1931), Georg Baselitz (born 1938), Michael Landy (born 1963) and Alison Wilding (born 1948). In addition to his bequest, Schubert donated 45 works on paper to the Museum during his lifetime, a selection of which are also shown here.

An activist fighting for the right to choose. Click. A wife picking out a velvet sofa. Click. A mother taking her eldest to judo. Click. A lover seducing a younger man. Click. A grandmother presenting her granddaughter to the camera. Click. Deborah Findlay, Romola Garai*, Gina McKee, Anjli Mohindra and Harmony Rose-Bremner give ‘extraordinary performances’ (The Observer) in Eline Arbo’s inventive adaptation, following sold out runs at the Almeida Theatre and Internationaal Theater Amsterdam. Hong Sooyeon: In the Flow | London

Feb 20–Apr 19, 2025 (UTC)ENDED
London
Exhibitions
The Korean artist studied Painting in Seoul and New York, and now lives near Seoul. Over a period of thirty years, Hong Sooyeon has developed a distinctive art practice in which her paintings present the viewer with an area of focus, an amorphous, shifting, translucent ‘figure’, which is located within a flatly painted peripheral ‘ground’. This ‘figure’ seems to be three-dimensional; it is modelled as if in relation to some specific light source. But this strange ‘figure’ is not comparable to anything we are likely to see in figurative art, or in a photograph, or during normal daily life. Hong Sooyeon’s work remains mimetic – it is an imitation - but it is not mimetic of something with a recognizable appearance.

Rooted in recollections and observations of her native Riyadh, Alia Ahmad’s work explores the layered relationships between place, identity and cultural memory. Her solo exhibition, ‘Fields / ميادين’, at White Cube Mason’s Yard debuts a new body of work that deepens her dialogue with the Saudi terrain, tracing its environmental dichotomies alongside the fluid interdependencies of climate, landscape and human presence. Variously evoking diverse flora, organic networks and sweeping, open expanses, the artist’s vivid, gestural paintings and intricate, monochromatic drawings reflect the diverse topography of her home region, revealing the desert as a mutable terrain, responsive to continual cycles of adaptation and renewal.

Welcome to the Positive Movement Club - a space for men (or AMAB individuals) to come together, connect and sweat! Once again, we return to the streets of London with a run hosted by Darren Onyejekwe, and powered by lululemon. What to expect at the event • A 7km run through the streets of London and two Royal Parks - followed by coffee in a local Soho café • Connect with like-minded men, each of whom has their own unique life experiences and challenges. By sharing our stories through authentic conversations, we can help each other overcome obstacles, discover opportunities and build relationships Further details included in the agenda section. About Postive Movement Club Darren is a lululemon ambassador, with over a decade of experience in the fitness industry. He has a passion for all things movement, and lives his life by his family ethos ‘Positive Mental Attitude’. When it comes to mental health, Darren’s two main safeguards are: movement and social interaction. Positive Movement Club looks to combine both of these creating an environment for men to be the best version of themselves. If our own mental state is good, we can better support our friends and family. On a monthly basis, we will provide a space for men to connect with liked-minded people, share experiences, and of course, get your sweat on! It is no secret that men face specific challenges when it comes to their mental health, and struggle to admit if they are feeling worried or low. From research performed by MIND (UK charity), it’s understood that male friendships are often based on shared activity - this is why Positive Movement Club has been created.
