Prendergast’s decades of experience as a psychotherapist and spiritual teacher, the area of the body that’s most difficult for people to connect with —given our survival fear and trauma—is our physical and energetic ground. This area in the lower belly and at the base of the spine corresponds with the root chakra in the Indian subtle body tradition, the lower dan tien in Taoism, and the hara in Japanese martial arts. While most spiritual traditions focus on opening the mind and the heart, they tend to avoid or undervalue the opening of the ground. In Dr. Prendergast’s experience, this area remains largely unconscious and deeply defended. However, with the correct understanding and quality of attention, we can consciously open our multidimensional ground and, as a result, experience a felt-sense of inner safety and stability that supports the full flowering of inner peace, freedom, and loving awareness—a truly embodied spirituality. Join Dr. Prendergast for a conversation with CIIS core faculty member in graduate department of East-West Psychology Dr. Sara Max Granovetter that dives deep into our personal, archetypal, and universal ground. Sharing insights from his latest book, Your Deepest Ground , Dr. Prendergast explains how we can begin to see through the false ground of our early conditioning and limited identity. Drawing from his teaching, and years working in sensing and inquiry practices, John invites you to begin your ground-opening exploration. John J. Prendergast, Ph.D. , is a spiritual teacher, author, retired psychotherapist, and retired adjunct professor of psychology who has taught at Esalen and Kripalu and online. He studied for many years with the sage Dr. Jean Klein as well as with the spiritual teacher Adyashanti. He is the author of the books In Touch and The Deep Heart . For more information, please visit his website . Sara Max Granovetter, Ph.D., LMFT, is a core faculty member in California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) graduate department of East-West Psychology. She received her bachelor's degree in philosophy from Harvard University, and her Ph.D. from CIIS in 2021. Her research explores how nonhuman animals serve as traumatic-numinous mirrors for contemporary human psyches. A practicing mindfulness-based psychotherapist, Sara’s clinical practice, pedagogy, and research weave together analytic psychology, Buddhism, ecopsychology, and posthumanism. Accessibility If you need to request accessibility accommodations, please email publicprograms@ciis.edu at least one week prior to the event. CinemaLit: Funny Lady (1975) | Mechanics' Institute

May 30, 2025 (UTC-7)
San Francisco
Arts
Film
May 30 - Funny Lady (1975), 150 minutes, directed by Herbert Ross, starring Barbra Streisand, James Caan, and Omar Sharif.  Funny Lady , Barbra Streisand’s follow-up to her Broadway and Hollywood triumph Funny Girl (1968) was also the last film lensed by James Wong Howe. Though he had mastered the art of photographing noirs, westerns, domestic comedies, and full-color widescreen epics, with Funny Lady Howe proved he could also film a splashy musical as well as anyone, and it earned him an Oscar nomination. Funny Lady doesn’t reach the musical and dramatic heights of Funny Girl , but it’s still amply entertaining. Sit back and enjoy the great Streisand in a bevy of dramatic and comedic production numbers, including “More Than You Know,” “I Found a Million Dollar Baby (in a Five & Ten Cents Store),” “It’s Gonna Be a Great Day,” “Am I Blue,” and “How Lucky Can You Get.” May CinemaLit - The Camera of James Wong Howe This month we honor the work of the great Hollywood cinematographer James Wong Howe (1899-1976). Howe was born in the Canton province of China in 1899. His family immigrated to Pasco, Washington when Howe was a young boy. After toying with several possible careers, including bantamweight boxer and airplane pilot, Howe pursued his early interest in photography. He landed his first job in the film business at Famous Players-Lasky. He caught the attention of director Cecil B. DeMille, who made him an assistant camera operator. Rising in his profession, Howe became a perfectionist who excelled at innovative techniques of lighting without reliance on new technology, a trait that served him well in the transition from silence to sound. He took his work seriously, valuing good relations with the director in service to the desired composition, atmosphere, and dramatic or comedic mood. Though most of his films were shot in black and white, he excelled at color, earning Oscar nominations for the color films The Old Man and the Sea (1958) and Funny Lady (1975). A few key Howe titles: Peter Pan (1924), Mantrap (1926), Sorrell and Son (1927), Laugh, Clown, Laugh (1928), The Power and the Glory (1933), Viva Villa! (1934), Fire Over England (1937), The Prisoner of Zenda (1937), The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938), Abe Lincoln in Illinois (1940), Fantasia (1940), Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942), Air Force (1943), Body and Soul (1947), Come Back, Little Sheba (1952), Picnic (1955), The Rose Tattoo (1955), The Last Angry Man (1959), Hud (1963), and Seconds (1966). At the time of his death in 1976, Howe had amassed two Oscars, eleven nominations, and the respect of the motion picture industry for his consistent excellent artistry behind the camera. CinemaLit will be screening four of his important films, two in black and white, and two in color spanning more than forty years: The Thin Man (1934), Sweet Smell of Success (1957), The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (1968), and Funny Lady (1975). Heart of Awareness w/ Monika & Nico | The Center SF

May 31, 2025 (UTC-7)
San Francisco
Cultural Experiences
This workshop is designed to guide you on a journey of deep connection with yourself through an intentional blend of movement, breathwork, and self-inquiry. It invites you to access the wellspring of your inner wisdom through a series of connective exercises, enhancing your ability to tune into what you are sensing, feeling, and thinking in the present moment. What to Expect: After gathering and settling in, the class will begin with a gentle yoga flow to bring you into presence with your body and cultivate awareness of your nervous system’s current state. As you move through a restorative asana practice, you’ll be guided through various active breathwork techniques, allowing you to explore the profound impact of conscious breathing and movement. From this embodied state, the group will transition into Gestalt-inspired self-inquiry. Depending on the size of the group, we’ll form dyads or triads (groups of 2 or 3). Participants will form dyads or triads (groups of 2 or 3), with each person taking 10–15 minutes to explore questions like, 'How are you, really?' followed by a 5-10 minute period of dialogic reflection. Using Gestalt inquiry principles, you’ll practice observing and naming your inner experiences—what you sense, feel, and think—without judgment. This process strengthens your ability to stay present with emotions, move beyond reactive patterns, and cultivate deeper self-awareness. As you inquire, the other members of your group will act as silent witnesses, offering nonjudgmental presence and creating a container for authentic expression. This practice is profoundly helpful for gaining clarity on the state of your inner landscape, while also showing you the state of your sense of connectedness to the outer world. Additionally, the experience of both fully seeing others and being completely heard creates a safe space for transformation, and a fertile ground for integrating both light and shadow aspects of your inner world. A note on inquiry: This Gestalt inquiry format is not meant to be a substitute for therapy or counseling. Instead, it offers a powerful toolkit for cultivating a lifelong practice of self-inquiry. It encourages us to approach our inner world with curiosity and compassion, embracing and integrating the parts of ourselves that seek healing—rather than rejecting the aspects we find difficult or uncomfortable, as we’re often conditioned to do. Bios: Monika Worcester Monika is a devoted student and teacher of yoga, self-inquiry, and meditation, embracing a holistic approach that integrates philosophy, practice, and daily life. SANGO @ Phoenix Hotel | The Phoenix Hotel

Jun 1, 2025 (UTC-7)
San Francisco
Concerts
This event is 21+. Valid government issued photo ID required for entry. All sales are final. Tickets are non transferable and non refundable. This event is rain or shine. Sango refers to his productions simply as beats, leaving the classification of his stylistically variable output -- which draws from contemporary R&B and hip-hop styles, non-commercial dubstep, funk carioca, and downtempo electronica -- to the listener. As a producer, the Seattle-based musician has worked with artists ranging from Bryson Tiller and Tinashe to PinkPantheress and Wale , but his own material has earned plenty of acclaim. In addition to his many self-released projects, Sango has recorded for labels like Soulection (2013's North) and Last Gang (2018's guest-heavy In the Comfort Of ), and even RCA (2019's Xavier Omar collaboration Moments Spent Loving You). Over the next few years his music became increasingly diverse and often globally informed, with projects like 2020's Da Rocinha 4 and 97, a 2022 joint album with Brazilian singer Juniper . Kai Wright was born in Washington state but spent a good portion of his childhood in Grand Rapids, Michigan prior to attending college 50 miles south at Western Michigan University. When Wright graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts' degree in graphic design, his number of short-form releases under the name Sango was already in the double digits, and he had the support of Soulection, which had issued his 2013 set North. Additionally, he had begun flirting with the mainstream by co-producing "Cold Sweat" for Tinashe 's Top 20 2014 hit Aquarius , and contributed to "The Sequence," off Bryson Tiller 's T R A P S O U L , a Top 20 entry near the end of 2015. Wright 's own releases continued to flow after he moved back to Seattle. Among the titles were 2016's Hours Spent Loving You (a collaboration with Xavier Omar ) and 2017's De Mim, Pra Você , both of which were self-released. Last Gang Records issued 2018's In the Comfort Of , a major project featuring guests like Smino , Jesse Boykins III , and James Vincent McMorrow . A year later, he and Omar teamed up for the RCA-issued Moments Spent Loving You, a sequel to their previous outing. Over the next several years, Sango's output remained not only prolific, but consistently diverse with globally influenced projects like Da Rocinha 4 and Shango, as well as regional ones like his 2022 Michigan homage Great Lakes Influence. A collaboration with Brazilian singer Juniper yielded the full-length 97, after which he focused on a series of 2023 single with artists like femdot. , Earlly Mac , and Masego .
