The exhibition, co-organized by the National Portrait Gallery and the Harwood Estate Trust, marks the first collaboration between the two institutions. Over fifty works by Beaton will be featured from the National Portrait Gallery's collection, several of which are being shown publicly for the first time. Theatricality is his signature Beaton's photography never content to be merely an observer. He habitually places his subjects within meticulously designed sets—backgrounds of unusual materials, dramatic lighting, props and costumes perfectly suited to the subject's temperament. Each photograph is more like a frozen scene from a play. This aesthetic of "photography as performance" is succinctly expressed in the exhibition's title: Staging Icons—bringing idols onto the stage. The exhibition includes classic portraits of Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Fred Astaire, Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Margaret, Julie Andrews, and others, almost a comprehensive chronicle of 20th-century figures.

Join Nina Davies in conversation with Sean Ketteringham, curator of Phantasmagoria, to hear more about her practice Join Nina Davies in conversation with Sean Ketteringham, curator of Phantasmagoria , to hear more about her practice and her work Image Syncers featured in the exhibition. Nina will also discuss her work, Glitch Guisers , which will be performed in front of the Henry Moore Institute earlier in the afternoon at 2pm and 3pm. Nina Davies’ (b. 1991, Canada) studied at Central Saint Martins College of Art, London and Goldsmiths, University of London. Her work has been exhibited at FACT, Liverpool (2025); Western Front, Vancouver (2025); The Photographer’s Gallery, London (2024); and Matt’s Gallery, London (2023). Her work considers dance in popular culture, particularly its dissemination, circulation and consumption. Working primarily with video, sculpture and performance, Davies considers the technological roots of dance phenomena such as TikTok dances and video game choreography, focusing on the commodification of the dancing body and speculatively reframing contemporary dances as the folk dances of the future. Davies’s work oscillates between fiction and non-fiction, often using a fictional podcast from the near future to comment on our lived encounters with today’s technological culture.
