Red Altar - Book Launch | Main Library - San Francisco Public Library
Feb 2, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
San Francisco
The San Francisco Main Public Library will host author and Eth-Noh-Tec Co-Director Nancy Wang from 1:30-3:30 PM on February 2nd, 2025 for the launch of her historical novel, Red Altar. This event is free and open to the public, and will include a reading by the author followed by a Q&A with Professor of Asian American Studies, Russel Jeung Ph.D. On Sunday, February 2nd from 1-3 PM, the San Francisco Main Public Library will host the book launch of author Nancy Wang’s latest novel, Red Altar. Red Altar is a work of historical fiction that tells the story of the Monterey Bay area’s Chinese fishing villages of the 1850's. This is the true story of three generations of Chinese fishermen surviving and building community despite the anti-Chinese laws and violence they experienced in California. Based on Wang’s own family history, Red Altar is written in conversation with the realities of racial injustice that continue to impact BIPOC communities today, weaving awareness and harvesting wisdom from freedom struggles past and present. Wang will read excerpts from the book, followed by a Q&A facilitated by Russell Jeung, Ph.D., Professor of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State University. The event will take place in the library’s Chinese Center on the 3rd floor. While the event is free and open to the public, donations are welcome! Food will be provided. This book launch will kick off a book tour that will take place throughout the spring of 2025, including a reading at local San Francisco bookstores Medicine for Nightmares, Fabulosa Books, and others. Follow @ethnohtec on Instagram and Facebook, or check our website www.ethnohtec.org for the full book tour schedule. Eth-Noh-Tec is an Asian American storytelling non-profit co-founded in 1981 by Nancy Wang and Robert Kikuchi-Yngojo. Eth-Noh-Tec presents ancient and contemporary Asian stories, with a mission to build bridges that create compassionate communities through art of storytelling.

Discovering one’s own family history can be surprising yet rewarding. Come listen to the author of Red Altar weave the story of her family starting with the crash of her ancestor’s junk boat in the Carmel Bay. Red Altar is a historical fiction novel based on true people and events starting with the 1850 Chinese junk boat crash that tossed 6 teenagers into the Carmel Bay to be rescued by members of the Ohlone Rumsen nation. The novel follows 3 generations of one Chinese family as they started the fishing industry in the Monterey Bay area despite increasing racism and prejudice. This is a story of resilience and courage, woven with the history of the anti-Chinese politics of the 19th century, and of the family members who endured and reinvented themselves over and over again as they faced laws against them and still thrived. Today, hundreds of their descendants gather every year to celebrate the resilience, courage and contributions of the family Red Altar is based on. Light refreshments will be served. But let us not despair. In these days of powerful text-to-code, image-to-video and water-to-wine generative models, it is natural for your weak human mind to feel lost and ashamed. This is why Tech Roast Show is on a mission - visiting every major tech hub across US and India - to remind terrified human techies: you are not useless. Inefficient? Yes. Flawed? Yes. Replaceable? Very. But - as long as you still have $35 to $99 - you possess unextracted value. There is hope, purpose and community to be found in buying tickets now. Buy tickets now to hear our message of hope. ISABELLA LA ROCCA at Books Inc. Opera Plaza | Books Inc. Opera Plaza
Feb 9, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
San Francisco
Books Inc. Opera Plaza welcomes artist, writer, and activist Isabella La Rocca González for an eye opening reading and discussion of her photographic book Censored Landscapes: The Hidden Reality of Farming Animals. Censored Landscapes is a compelling long-term photographic project that unveils the hidden reality of animal agriculture. Photographs, essays, poetry, and research together tell a factual story about the most abusive industry of the 21st century.
Isabella La Rocca González’s lens captures the haunting beauty of landscapes that portray the animal agricultural industry. A number displayed with each image represents the lives imprisoned within the facility, drawing attention to the magnitude of suffering behind the banal exteriors. Portraits of nonhuman animals who have been confined in such facilities are emblematic of the vast number of animals whose individuality, sentience, and beauty are obliterated by the industry.
Censored Landscapes maintains a lyrical quality through evocative photographs, poetry, and personal narrative. The project also provides a robust basis in verifiable facts and scientific research. Readers are encouraged to confront the intricate web of connections between animal agriculture, animal suffering, environmental devastation, worker exploitation, human health, economic political structures, and social justice. This book is a call to action, a revelation of the invisible, and an opportunity to see, feel, and make a difference. Isabella La Rocca González is an artist, writer, and activist based in the United States. As the daughter of immigrants, she strives to reconcile values from her indigenous Mexican roots with her European heritage. Awards for her work include the Ferguson Grant from the Friends of Photography. Her photographs have been exhibited internationally, including a solo show at the Center for Photography in Woodstock. Her creative nonfiction works have been published in various outlets. Her screenplay, Fugue 9, was chosen as a finalist for the 2008 Sundance Screenwriters Lab. She received her BA in fine arts from the University of Pennsylvania, and her MFA in photography from Indiana University.

NNEDI OKORAFOR at Books Inc. Opera Plaza | Books Inc. Opera Plaza
Feb 13, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
San Francisco
Books Inc. in partnership with Litquake is proud to present award-winning and bestselling author Nnedi Okarafor for a celebration of her new novel: Death of the Author! Nnedi will be in conversaiton with Faith Adiele. This event is co-presented with theMUSEUM OF THE AFRICAN DIASPORA. Death of the Author is an exhilarating tale. A disabled Nigerian American woman pens a wildly successful Sci-Fi novel, but as her fame rises, she loses control of the narrative—a surprisingly cutting, yet heartfelt drama about art and love, identity and connection, and, ultimately, what makes us human. This is a story unlike anything you’ve read before. The future of storytelling is here. Disabled, disinclined to marry, and more interested in writing than a lucrative career in medicine or law, Zelu has always felt like the outcast of her large Nigerian family. Then her life is upended when, in the middle of her sister’s lavish Caribbean wedding, she’s unceremoniously fired from her university job and, to add insult to injury, her novel is rejected by yet another publisher. With her career and dreams crushed in one fell swoop, she decides to write something just for herself. What comes out is nothing like the quiet, literary novels that have so far peppered her unremarkable career. It’s a far-future epic where androids and AI wage war in the grown-over ruins of human civilization. She calls it Rusted Robots. When Zelu finds the courage to share her strange novel, she does not realize she is about to embark on a life-altering journey—one that will catapult her into literary stardom, but also perhaps obliterate everything her book was meant to be. From Chicago to Lagos to the far reaches of space, Zelu’s novel will change the future not only for humanity, but for the robots who come next. A book-within-a-book that blends the line between writing and being written, Death of the Author is a masterpiece of metafiction that manages to combine the razor-sharp commentary of Yellowface with the heartfelt humanity of Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow. Surprisingly funny, deeply poignant, and endlessly discussable, this is at once the tale of a woman on the margins risking everything to be heard and a testament to the power of storytelling to shape the world as we know it. Don’t be frightened by the title. Nnedi Okorafor is fine… and doing her best work yet. Death of the Author reads like three novels in one, or maybe four, about fame and family, culture and change, the power of story, the writer’s life… and robots. This one has it all.” -George R.R. Martin “Spellbinding… As delicious as it is disorienting.” -Zakiya Dalila Harris, New York Times bestselling author of The Other Back Girl, in the New York Times Book Review A genre-defying metafictional experiment . . . Mind-bending. -New York Times Book Review,Alexandra Alter Fans of masterful storytelling should definitely check out Death of The Author by Nnedi Okarafor. It blends genres in the most perfect way to be a suspenseful, timely and heartfelt read. I can’t wait for everyone to read this book!” -People Magazine,Monique Richburg “I was captivated by the story—and the many stories-within-the-story—of this ambitious, inventive tribute to the power of storytelling itself.”-Nikki Erlick, New York Times bestselling author of The Measure “Nnedi Okorafor is so ferociously talented that we are starting to see she cannot be boxed into any category or genre. Her new novel, Death of the Author, is a deeply felt dazzle. A blaze. It is true deep to the bones.” -Luis Alberto Urrea, Pulitzer Prize finalist and bestselling author of The House of Broken Angels There’s more vivid imagination in a page of Nnedi Okorafor’s work than in whole volumes. -Ursula K. Le Guin Okorafor's book bounces between the novel (about the writer) and the novel-within-the novel (about the robots), and the result is an ambitious blend of genres. -NPR One of her most revealing, deeply felt, and insightful novels to date. -Locus magazine, Gary K. Wolfe “A remarkable exploration of storytelling, fame and the Nigerian American experience, Death of the Author surprises all the way to its brilliant ending.”-BookPage(starred review) “ irresistible to readers. Her nearly two dozen works of fiction have earned Okorafor a slew of honors—four Hugos, a Nebula, a World Fantasy Award. And a new generation of American storytellers who explicitly use their African heritage, history and mythology to inspire their work have followed in her wake, including Tomi Adeyemi, Ayana Gray, Jordan Ifueko and Namina Forna. . . . Connection is the heartbeat of Okorafor’s work.” -New York Times, 12 African Artists Leading a Culture Renaissance Around the World One of most revealing, deeply felt, and insightful novels to date. -Locus Magazine, Gary K. Wolfe Faith Adiele writes and speaks about race, culture and travel. She is author of Meeting Faith, a memoir about ordaining as Thailand’s first Black Buddhist nun that won the PEN Open Book Award and routinely appears on travel listicles. Her media credits include Sleep Stories (CALM app), two episodes of A World of Calm (HBOMax), and the documentary My Journey Home (PBS), about finding her family in Nigeria. Founder of the nation’s first writing workshop for travelers of color, she teaches at California College of the Arts and leads writing workshops around the world. Quilted Portraits of Love, Resistance and Self-Determination | de Young Museum
Feb 15, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
San Francisco
You’re All I Need: Quilted Portraits of Love, Resistance and Self-Determination Through her dynamic, celebratory quilted portraits of people of African decent , Bisa Butler (b. 1973, Orange, NJ) investigates the purposes and potential of portraiture within the Black historical narrative. Butler's influences range widely from personal family scrapbooks to American folk traditions and AfriCOBRA philosophies. Although her finished works are made entirely of textiles, Butler approaches the medium from a painterly perspective. Sourcing imagery mainly from photographs, she uses layered fabrics and quilting to create unique compositions, psychological depth and detailed textures that she found missing from her paintings. By returning to textiles, Butler has reconnected with her family's history since it was her grandmother and mother who taught her to sew. Bisa Butler lives in South Orange, New Jersey and has a studio in Jersey City. Butler earned her BFA in painting at Howard University, Washington, D.C. in 1995 and holds a MAT in teaching art from Montclair State University, New Jersey. Her work has been exhibited widely, both domestically and internationally. Bisa was named an honorary doctorate of letters from Bloomfield College and recently received the inaugural Faith in the Arts Award. In 2020, Butler had her first institutional solo exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work can be found in the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and Pérez Art Museum, Miami. The World Is Yours, Butler’s first solo exhibition with Jeffrey Deitch, in 2023 in New York, was enthusiastically received and attracted thousands of visitors. Her work All Power to the People is now a part of the permanent collection of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. The presentation will be take place in the Koret Auditorium at the de Young Museum in San Francisco. Attendance in person is free. Eventbrite tickets are for those who cannot attend in person and would like to view the live Zoom broadcast. A recording will be available for 14 days following the talk.
