Romantic comedies have had an incredible influence on popular culture, shaping everything from how we think of relationships to fashion. Often swept aside in film history, these movies are thought of as pure comfort viewing. Although they certainly provide those fuzzy feelings, they have also had a significant artistic influence and cultural impact. Spanning decades of romantic comedies—from movies of the 1930s such as It Happened One Night and the rom com craze of the 80s and 90s including When Harry Met Sally...all the way to contemporary hits like Crazy Rich Asians, and everything in between—Falling in Love at the Movies will make you fall in love (all over again) with romantic comedies. Esther Zuckerman—accomplished entertainment journalist and member of the New York Film Critic’s Circle—takes readers on a journey through the rom-com. She examines the psychological aspects that make us so drawn to these types of films, diving deep into the key auteurs—from Preston Sturges to James L. Brooks to Nora Ephron and beyond—who both created and subverted the canon. These directors, actors, and writers shaped the genre, establishing and also busting traditional pillars and tenets of these movies such as the “Perfect Pair” or “The Man in Crisis” and “The High Maintenance Woman.” Featuring full-color images from the films throughout, along the way Zuckerman takes detours, explores iconic lines of dialogue (Who could forget Julia Roberts' “I’m also just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her” iconic moment from Notting Hill?) to memorable scenes (the magical moments at the Empire State Building in An Affair to Remember and Sleepless in Seattle) and weaves in interviews of artists and romantic comedy fanatics in the industry. Looking beyond the traditional rom-com, Zuckerman digs into the nooks and crannies, the films that buck the trend of happily ever after, the ones that think beyond heteronormative narratives, and the indies that kept the rom-com alive outside of the studio system, to offer a more comprehensive story of the rom-com than has ever been seen before—and one that you’re bound to love. How’s that for a happy ending? Esther Zuckerman is an entertainment journalist whose work has appeared in publications like the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Vanity Fair, GQ, the Hollywood Reporter, and many more. She is the author of Beyond the Best Dressed and A Field Guide to Internet Boyfriends. Esther lives and writes in New York City. David Sims is a staff writer at The Atlantic, where he covers culture. He is also a co-host of the Blank Check podcast. Before joining The Atlantic in 2014, David worked at The A.V. Club as a critic and was a staff reporter on education and local politics at the New York City newspaper The Chief-Leader.

Dustin Pittman’s New York After Dark | Soho Photo Gallery, 15 White Street, Tribeca, NYC
Dec 4, 2024 (UTC-5)
New York
Dustin Pittman, will be joining us to discuss the work in his stunning, new coffee table book, New York After Dark. The images in Dustin’s book, many never before published, give viewers a fly-on-the-wall view of New York City’s legendary pop culture scene of the 70’s and 80’s; an intimate view of the worlds of fashion, art, music, celebrity and politics, and where they mingled at nightclubs and bars, such as CBGB and The Mudd Club, along with Andy Warhol's Factory and Studio 54's exclusive VIP room. That intimacy was born out of the mutual respect, trust and collaboration between Dustin and his subjects. Dustin says, I really respect survivors. If you get knocked down — which you will — you have to get back up. It’s tough out there. For me the secret of survival is to stay true to your soul. Stay the path and stay true to your vision.” That’s great advice for photographers as well! A book signing will follow Dustin’s talk. This free in-person event will be held at Soho Photo Gallery. Seating is limited. Registration required. One seat per person. Speaker Bio: Dustin Pittman Dustin Pittman amassed an archive of 100,000 photographs chronicling the untamed corners of New York City's after-hours nightlife, from shadowy underground haunts to prestigious galleries and clubs. This wish I was there book unveils the vibrant pop culture scene of New York during the 1970s and ‘80s. A collection of these images have recently been published as the book, New York After Dark, by Rizzoli.
Pittman’s photography is about more than photography; it's about the man behind the camera and the history, people, places, and events that have defined generations
Dustin was not just an observer but was an active participant in the places and events that shaped pop culture as we know it-the goings- on at Andy Warhol's Factory, the women's liberation movements of the 1970s the VIP room at Studio 54, and the nascent punk scene at CBGB and The Mudd Club. My political work I've always seen as cultural work - an active participant in the ACT UP & a veteran of the Gay Liberation Front movement and Woman’s Rights movement his work has always been at the forefront of genderqueer visual politics challenges stereotypes and gender, sexual, and racial preconceptions. Dustin has always celebrated the wide spectrum of identities and experiences across the LGBTQIA+ community and recognize the oath-making spirit of its culture.
Through Pittman's lens, readers are provided an intimate glimpse into the intersecting worlds of fashion and celebrity, music, art, and politics-from the glam rock underground and the golden age of disco to the ateliers of the world's most famous fashion designers such as Halston, Yves Saint Laurent, and Calvin Klein. Pittman was witness to such rising stars as Blondie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, The New York Dolls, and Roxy Music, as well as seminal cultural figures including Raquel Welch, Truman Capote, Diana Ross, Tina Chow, Brooke Shields, Jerry Hall, Divine, and Liza Minnelli-all caught in spontaneous, unguarded New York moments.
A vast majority of images are previously unpublished images of some of the most iconic and revered figures of the late 20th century, accompanied by firsthand observations and remembrances by Pittman. The book features an introductory essay offering an objective view of Pittman's work and importance as a chronicle of the music, art, and fashion scenes.

Panel | Visual Investigations: Between Advocacy, Journalism and Law | Frederick P. Rose Auditorium
Dec 5, 2024 (UTC-5)
New York
Join us for a discussion in connection with Visual Investigations, an exhibition that recently opened at The Architekturmuseum der TUM in Munich. The exhibition delves into the emerging field of visual investigation, examining how architecture operates between advocacy, journalism, and law in the pursuit of justice and accountability. A series of seven case studies will be presented to contextualize the multifaceted roles architecture can play within these domains. A panel discussion including curator Andres Lepik, Civil Rights Attorney Elena Cohen, Artist Suneil Sanzgiri and Director of SITU Research Brad Samuels will follow the presentations. Human rights violations are more present in the public domain than ever before, not least due to the ubiquity of image sources: smartphones, satellites, surveillance equipment, and police body cameras produce large volumes of audiovisual material, recording violent and repressive incidents, as well as persistent injustices. Together, the case studies present the power of visual investigation to shed light on hidden injustices and support accountability across various domains. On occasion of the exhibition, an accompanying publication Reading Visual Investigations explores the emerging field of visual investigations, where architecture intersects with journalism, law, and advocacy to expose human rights violations, offering critical insights through seven case studies and commissioned essays from practitioners. More details on purchasing here. Brad Samuels is a founding partner at SITU Research, a Brooklyn-based visual investigations practice focused on merging data and design to create new pathways for justice. SITU Research’s work supports activists, advocates, and lawyers, bridging the gap between digital evidence and the communities that can best deploy them towards justice and accountability. Samuels has overseen the team’s visual investigations for legal and advocacy organizations including The International Criminal Court, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, The Associated Press, Frontline, The United Nations and many others.
Outside the multidisciplinary practice, Samuels has served on the Technology Advisory Board for the International Criminal Court, The Advisory Board for the Carnegie Mellon's Center for Human Rights Science and the board of The Architectural League of New York. He currently teaches at The Irwin S Chanin School of Architecture at the Cooper Union. Suneil Sanzgiri is an Indian American artist, researcher, and filmmaker. Spanning experimental video and film, animations, essays, and installations, his work contends with questions of identity, heritage, culture, and diaspora in relation to structural violence and anticolonial struggles across the Global South. Sanzgiri’s films offer sonic and visual journeys through family history, local mythology, and colonial legacies of extraction in Goa, India—where his family originates. His first institutional solo exhibition Here the Earth Grows Gold opened at the Brooklyn Museum in October 2023. His award-winning films have circulated widely at film festivals and art institutions across the world including International Film Festival Rotterdam, New York Film Festival, BFI London Film Festival, Hong Kong International Film Festival, Sheffield Doc/Fest, Doclisboa, Viennale, Camden International Film Festival, BlackStar Film Festival, Open City Docs, REDCAT, MASS MoCA, Wexner Center for the Arts, moCa Cleveland, Le Cinéma Club, Criterion Collection, and many more. Elena L. Cohen, Assistant Professor of Law at Widener University Delaware Law School, is an accomplished attorney, activist, and academic with a J.D. from Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the City University of New York. She is the former President of the National Lawyers Guild and has extensive experience in civil rights litigation, criminal defense, and legal support for protest activities. Cohen’s scholarly contributions include articles on the intersection of politics and law and a chapter in Biopolitics and Utopia: An Interdisciplinary Reader. At Delaware Law, Professor Cohen will teach a wide range of courses including Civil Rights, and Constitutional Law, Civil Procedure, Criminal Law, Legal Writing and Torts. Andres Lepik is Professor for architecture history and curatorial studies at Technical University Munich (TUM) and director of the Architecture Museum. He studied art history and finished with a PhD on architectural models in the Renaissance. In 1994 he started working as Curator at Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin presenting „Renzo Piano“ (2000) and „Content. Rem Koolhaas and AMO/OMA“ in 2003. Launch of "The Enchanted Bay" + Screening of "A Call to Arts" | 1 Washington Mews
Dec 5, 2024 (UTC-5)
New York
Register Join us for a special evening with Cormac O'Malley as we honor the legacies of Ernie O'Malley and Helen Hooker with readings and remarks to celebrate the launch of The Enchanted Bay: Tales and Legends from Ernie O'Malley's Irish Folklore Collection, followed by a screening of A Call to Arts: An Artistic Journey in Ireland, 1935-1975. It is a little-known fact that Ernie O' Malley, renowned for his role in Ireland's revolutionary struggle, was also a passionate collector of Irish folklore. Centered on O' Malley's native Clew Bay and its environs and transcribed by his son Cormac, The Enchanted Bay is a rich tapestry of tales that showcases the enduring power of the oral tradition in Ireland. From the entertaining exploits of the Gob n Saor, mythical master builder, to the Clare Island man who married a selkie, this collection offers a glimpse into the heart of Irish storytelling. A testament to O' Malley's multifaceted legacy, several of the stories in this compilation were gathered while he travelled Ireland as an IRA organiser. The insights he gained through folklore collecting would later inform his ambitious project of recording testimonies from former comrades, solidifying his place as a pivotal figure in the preservation of Irish history and culture. The tales in these pages maintain the unique voices of local communities, conjuring an arcane, fascinating world that is slipping further from memory. A Call to Arts explores Helen Hooker and Ernie O’Malley’s lives and their contributions to the arts in a newly independent Ireland. The film examines the photography and sculpture of Helen Hooker, and her marriage with Irish soldier and author, Ernie O’Malley. It’s an artistic journey in Ireland that takes place from 1935-1975. It is not only about Helen Hooker and Ernie O’Malley in Ireland, but also about their youngest son Cormac’s mission to discover their incredible legacy. The unlikely pair fell in love in New York and together they helped change the shape of the arts in Ireland in the 20th century. A Call to Arts showcases insights from over 22 interviews in conversation with rich archival images and video, some never seen before. The film describes a turbulent and inspired arts journey through a newly independent Ireland, and examines the intersection of modernism in arts and literature with Irish independence. Helen Hooker and Ernie O’Malley were a couple who, by all accounts, made it their work to see Ireland not for how it was, but for what it could become.

Our time together will be filled with live music, film, and conversation. Come experience a sense of both anticipation and freedom and leave with a wealth of hope. Oh yeah, bring somebody with you because what you experience will be hard to explain later. Tragedy doesn’t ruin us. Hopelessness does. Can’t catch us in NYC? Maybe we’ll see you in one of the other Cities we’ll be touring in 2024-2025.
