FOCUS GROUP | New York

Sep 3–Nov 27, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
New York
Exhibitions
United by their assertive, sometimes insistent, political messages, the fifty-two works by thirty-three artists included in this exhibition offer a select and lively perspective on American elections, politicians and social power dynamics. Spanning more than five decades, the works not only refer to political subjects and social issues specific to their time, but also resonate with ideological and humanistic themes amazingly relevant today. This exhibition invites the viewer to compare and contrast many visual strategies that explore issues of racism, demagoguery, oppression, war, climate change, among others. Some artists employ tools such as satire, propaganda, and the portrayal of newsworthy events or utopian ideals. Others utilize more iconic subjects—such as U.S. presidents, Uncle Sam, the Oval Office, and Old Glory—to celebrate, examine, and critique American governance and policy.

Arts
School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents the MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Thesis Screening 2024, a film screening of works by four graduates of the class of 2024: Anastasia Caulfield, Guanyu Liu, Jiani Wang, and Royee Weng. The screening will take place on Tuesday, September 3rd at the SVA Theatre, 333 West 23rd Street, New York City. Doors will open to the public at 5:30pm, with the screening beginning at 6:30pm. The lens and screen arts are arguably the most ubiquitous form of creative expression today, and these four films explore the range of possibilities that today’s young video artists can make. Our department explores all elements of the moving image, from the real-world documentary to the experimental. Grahame Weinbren, celebrated video innovator and senior video faculty member says this, “Each of these moving image projects is the culmination of a full year of focused conceptual, technical, often lonely, but ultimately rewarding effort. Though at first the four films may appear divergent in subject, genre and style, there is a common thread. Each represents an honest, personal quest of great significance to the filmmaker, which at the same time is current and urgent to the culture at large. I am proud to have worked with the four artists as they each mapped their own path through the development of these four unique works of cinema.” Root Note (23 min) by Anastasia Caulfield is a freeform documentary that engages with an independent and performative group of people who congregate primarily in the nightlife of Union Square, New York. The camera is the vehicle that helps capture the art form of freestyle music. Root Note is a personal and artistic endeavor reflecting on the ongoing pursuit to find community for the artist herself while navigating the spontaneous interactions of the eclectic atmosphere. SUMMER NANA (39:29 min) by Guanyu Liu is a documentary of his elderly grandmother on a journey together full of warmth and memories. The film deeply shows the roots of family and the deep affection that evokes the audience's attachment to the nature of family and homeland. It is the story of the recent evolution of China. Touch the Touch, From Far Away (32:05 min) by Jiani Wang is a hybrid film blending documentary and fiction, exploring the authenticity of both human-to-human and human-to-machine communication and connections. Jiani navigates the modern terrain of modern communication from chatbots to AI and everything in-between. to pierce the wound, softly (30:02 min) by Royee Weng is a piece about the joy of her healing, the embodied self and generational trauma. It is a practice in connecting and community building as well as ritual healing. Information Source: SVA MFA Photography, Video and Related Media | eventbrite

Opening Reception: Peter Knapp "North South East West" | NowHere

Sep 5, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED

Arts
Fine Art
Join us on September 5 as we celebrate the opening of our new show highlighting the work of Swiss photographer Peter Knapp, co-curated by Japanese Art Director Joji Mita. About the show: Peter Knapp was born on June 5th, 1931, in Bäretswil, Switzerland. He studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich, where he was influenced by the thinking and aesthetics of the Bauhaus movement. He learned about the beauty of function and modernity, which he came to expertly demonstrate in his typography, logo work, catalogue and poster design, and scenography. This led him to work, in the 1950s, as art director for the magazine Nouveau Fémina and the Groupe Galeries Lafayette. He subsequently won a competition to design the pavilions for the Brussels World’s Fair in 1956 alongside the Russian designer Slavik. In 1959, the legendary magazine creator Hélène Lazareff recruited Knapp to art direct ELLE, which was then an insurgent, iconoclastic publication on the fashion-magazine scene. Knapp served there until 1966 and then again from 1974 until 1977. During the same years, Knapp also became a photographer in his own right, grafting the Bauhaus tenet of applied art onto the practice of fashion photography in his elegant, expertly composed, and subtly challenging photographs. Fashion photography, when considered an applied art, has interesting links to older forms of expression such as genre painting in Western Europe by artists like Pieter Bruegel and Johannes Vermeer, and Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints or paintings. In Japan, these things are considered fuzoku, which refers to customs and manners of daily life (including food, clothing, and housing) that are characteristic of a certain period, society, region, or class. And just as ukiyo-e in Japan and genre paintings in Western Europe are now considered critically important art movements, we should also consider applied fashion photography as a new form of art, and Peter Knapp as one of its foundational practitioners. About NowHere NowHere is a multipurpose hub and studio for New York City-based Japanese creators from across all disciplines. We exist to help emerging talent explore their maximum potential by providing them with the means to create and showcase their practice and expand their network. Like the artists we serve, we emigrated to New York, drawn to the city's endlessly inspiring energy. We hope to give back to the city by facilitating new art from a Japanese perspective, adding to New York's constantly evolving cultural landscape, and offering inspiration back to New York in turn. In our commitment to supporting art and creativity, we want to ensure that NowHere's impact extends far beyond the confines of a traditional gallery and across cultures. We want people to leave our spaces with inspiration, new friendships, new knowledge, and a feeling of connection to the NowHere community. Information Source: NowHere | eventbrite
