The Magic of Books Monthly lecture series with William Kiesel Presented by PRS and Ouroboros Press In the PRS LIBRARY! Lecture Four: Secret Books of the Rosicrucians Q&A to follow the lecture Lecture Series Overview “Without books, there is no memory, and without memory, a culture cannot exist.” - Fernando Báez Join William Kiesel for a series of engaging talks on books and book culture surrounding the wisdom traditions housed in the PRS Library. Books are vessels of coagulated thought, distilled and filtered through the minds of authors, artists and adepts. Understanding the technology of the book and the laboratory of the library grants the seeker access to the esoteric secrets that can aid them on their journey of discovery. Presented in the peaceful environs of the PRS Library, William uses some of the bibilographic treasures of the library to illustrate multi-disciplined topics aimed at bringing deeper awareness into these important literary tools which have preserved the ageless wisdom for centuries. July 10 - Secret Books of the Rosicrucians In the seventeenth century secret Rosicrucian manuscripts were passed around Europe offering explosive new viewpoints in religion and esotericism, including astrology, alchemy, cabala and divine theurgy. These ideas formed a flashpoint of controversy and sparked a growing movement that has influenced many esoteric practitioners down to modern times. This library talk will exhibit some of the Rosicrucian holdings of the PRS library and feature a particular Rosicrucian text and its influences, the Codex Rosae Crucis, published by Manly P. Hall in 1938. About William Kiesel William Kiesel has walked the path of esotericism for over 30 years. His practical experience and historical knowledge of occult literature and culture draws from such diverse disciplines as Hermeticism, Neoplatonism, Qabalah, Thelema, Alchemy, Rosicrucianism, Theosophy, and Ceremonial Magic. With his decades as an antiquarian bookseller, his training in letterpress printing and bookbinding, Kiesel brings his love of books and scholarship together as publisher at Ouroboros Press. Ashley Whitaker presents BITTER TEXAS HONEY with Anna Dorn and Nora Lange | 18604 Ventura Blvd
Apr 25, 2025 (UTC-8)
Boulevard
Sunny's Bookshop - Located inside our floral shop Shades of Petals (Tarzana, CA) Join us to celebrate the LA Book Launch of Ashley Whitaker's debut novel BITTER TEXAS HONEY! Ashley will be in conversation with Anna Dorn and Nora Lange for this special night of reading, signing, and Q&A. ABOUT BITTER TEXAS HONEY The Royal TenenbaumsmeetsFleabagin this hilarious and dizzyingly smart debut about an over-the-top evangelical Texan family—and the daughter at its center racing to finish her very important novel before her ex-boyfriend finishes his. It’s 2011, and twenty-three-year-old Joan West is not like the rest of her liberal peers in Austin, nor is she quite like her Tea Party Republican, God-loving family. Sure, she listens to conservative talk radio on her way to and from her internship at the Capitol. But she was once an America-hating leftist who kissed girls at parties, refused to shave, and had plenty of emotionless sex with jazz school friends—that is until a drug-induced mania forced her to return to her senses. But above all Joan is a writer, an artist, or at least she desperately wants to be. Always in search of inspiration for her novel, she catalogs every detail of her relationships with men—including with her former muse slash current arch nemesis Roberto—and mines her very dysfunctional family for material. But when her beloved, credit card debt–racked cousin Wyatt finds himself in crisis, Joan’s worldview is cracked open and everything comes crashing down. Funny, whip-smart, and often tender, Bitter Texas Honey introduces us to the unforgettable and indefatigable Joan West: ambitious, full of contradictions, utterly herself. As she wades through it all—addiction, politics, loss, and, notably, her father’s string of increasingly bizarre girlfriends—we witness her confront what it means to be a person, and an artist, in the world. ABOUT ASHLEY WHITAKER Ashley Whitaker is a writer from Texas. She received an MFA from the Helen Zell Writers’ Program at the University of Michigan. Her work has appeared in Tin House, and she’s had a residency at Ragdale. She lives in Austin with her husband and children. ABOUT ANNA DORN Anna Dorn is the author of the novels Perfume and Pain, Exalted, and Vagablonde. She was a Lambda Literary Fellow and Exalted was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. Her next novel American Spirits is forthcoming in 2026. She lives in Los Angeles. ABOUT NORA LANGE Nora Lange’s short writing has appeared in BOMB, Hazlitt, Joyland, American Short Fiction, Denver Quarterly, HTMLGiant, The Fairy Tale Review, and elsewhere. She has received fellowships from Brown University and is a fellow at the Los Angeles Institute of the Humanities. Us Fools is her first novel.
