Galerie Lelong: Dialogues | Kate Shepherd and Isabelle Dervaux | Galerie Lelong & Co., New York
Jan 25, 2025 (UTC-5)
West
Galerie Lelong & Co., New York is pleased to present a conversation held on occasion of Kate Shepherd's solo exhibition, ABC and sometimes Y, on view at the gallery from December 12, 2024 through February 8, 2025. Join Shepherd in conversation with art historian and curator Isabelle Dervaux as they discuss the exhibition and evolution of Shepherd's practice. ABC and sometimes Y presents new paintings, sculptures, and watercolors made with Shepherd’s signature use of architectural logic to situate geometric configurations in space. Featuring new forms, colors, and the artist’s largest sculptures to date, demonstrating Shepherd’s ongoing innovation of and expansion upon her decades long practice engaging in abstraction and perspectival space. Known for her richly colored paintings built with layers of monochromatic enamel, Kate Shepherd’s decades-long exploration of perspectival space investigates the relationship of paintings to their environments; the various reflective surfaces establishing a spatial discourse across the panel, the viewer, and the gallery space. Panels in materials like wood and aluminum that connote the architecture for which the paint is meant form the basis of the paintings. This method results in a gleaming, reflective surface, which allows the viewers to see their own reflections and also guards the intimate image from view. Using methods such as hand painting thin linear constructions and interrupting the surface by sanding the glossy enamel, Shepherd incorporates geometric forms in her work that imply dimensional space on the two-dimensional surface. Being situationally reactive to light and movement, the paintings take on sculptural characteristics in their constant change. The artist’s oeuvre also encompasses works on paper, which examine her constantly evolving exploration of color. Shepherd has exhibited at museums and galleries across the United States and Europe since 1994. Her most recent museum solo exhibitions include Kate Shepherd: Lineaments, Charlotte and Philip Hanes Art Gallery, Wake Forest University, North Carolina, and Intersections: Relation to and yet not (homage to Mondrian) by Kate Shepherd, Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C. Shepherd’s work is featured in numerous museum collections including the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois; Buffalo AKG Art Museum, New York; Baltimore Museum of Art, Maryland; Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, Michigan; Denver Art Museum, Colorado; Des Moines Art Center, Iowa; Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indiana; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California; Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Massachusetts; Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Texas; Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C.; Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, Arizona; and Seattle Art Museum, Washington. The artist lives and works in New York City, where she was born in 1961. Isabelle Dervaux is an art historian and curator. From 2005 to 2023 she was the Acquavella Curator and Department Head of Modern and Contemporary Drawings at the Morgan Library & Museum, New York. Previously she held curatorial positions at the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, and the National Academy Museum, New York. She holds a Ph.D. in art history from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, and a Master’s degree from the University of Paris-Sorbonne. She has curated numerous exhibitions on twentieth-century European and American art, including Surrealism USA (2005); Roy Lichtenstein: The Black-and-White Drawings (2010); Dan Flavin: Drawing (2012); Subliming Vessel: The Drawings of Matthew Barney (2013); Dubuffet Drawings (2016); Georg Baselitz: Six Decades of Drawings (2022); Entrance to the Mind: Drawings by George Condo (2023) and Ferdinand Hodler: Drawings (2023). She has published extensively on modern and contemporary art, notably essays on Surrealism, Josef Albers, Arshile Gorky, Philip Guston, Helen Frankenthaler, Cy Twombly, and Tom Wesselmann.

'Void: Jewellery by Chu Winnie Cheung' Exhibition Reception | Craft Ontario Shop & Gallery
Jan 25, 2025 (UTC-5)
West
Exhibition: January 11 – February 23, 2025
Reception: Saturday, January 25 from 2-5pm
Craft Ontario Gallery, 1106 Queen Street West, Toronto ‘Void’ is a solo exhibition of jewellery by Toronto-based Chinese artist Chu Winnie Cheung that explores constraint, censorship and discrimination in the context of contemporary Chinese society. Through her jewellery, Winnie juxtaposes rigid socio-cultural norms with the raw, unbridled energy of nature – symbolized by free-floating clouds. ‘Void’ is a study in contrasts—seemingly simple pieces reveal complex, layered meanings. The grey stone-like material is in fact Xuan paper, on which the word ‘clouds’ has been inscribed in Chinese calligraphy before being shredded and moulded, a process effectively turning the ephemeral into something solid. The forms of certain pieces, such as disks, tubes and wedges, are inspired by ancient ceremonial objects from ancient China (circa 2500 BCE). Jade cong tubes and bi discs historically symbolized connections to the sky and earth, evoking an intertwined relationship between humans and nature. By reimagining these forms in paper, the work contrasts ancient respect for natural balance with the modern tendency to dominate and diminish it. The yue axes symbolize a critique of the ruling elite, with their symbolic power enfeebled by rendering the weapons lightweight. This theme continues in works like ‘Endless Writing’, where documenting texts under Chinese censorship expresses disapproval of centralized power and control. Ultimately, ‘Void’ is a body of work that critiques the forces of centralization, control, and constraint. It invites us to confront the mechanisms of power that not only shape human societies, but also disrupt the fragile balance between humans and the natural world. Chu Winnie Cheung is a Chinese artist and translator based in Toronto. She earned her BA in Interpreting & Translation Studies from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in 2021 and furthered her education with a MFA in Jewelry and Metalsmithing from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2023. Winnie has participated in numerous exhibitions worldwide, including the 33rd Japan Jewellery Competition in Tokyo, Japan; Marzee International Graduate Show 2023 in the Netherlands; and exhibition series of Balbuceo de un Preludio (La Brujula) in Chile across 7 cities. Her first solo exhibition opened in July 2024 at MaS Studio in Shanghai, China. Her professional experience includes roles as a gallery assistant at Ornamentum Gallery in Hudson, US, and as an instructor at Rhode Island School of Design, where she taught courses in metalsmithing and enameling. Winnie has been recognized for her innovative approach to jewelry making with several awards and nominations, including the 2024 JJ Studio Award for Emerging Jewellery Artists from Craft Ontario and the New Talents Award Nominee 2023 from Klimt02. 'Void' is part of the 2025 DesignTO Festival.

Voices of Resilience - Daniel Hamin Go - cello, and Ben Smith - piano | Christ First United Church
Jan 25, 2025 (UTC-5)
West
Daniel Hamin Go - Cello The first time Daniel Hamin Go picked up the cello, he was 12. As he drew the bow across the open C string, the cello’s vibrations resonated throughout his entire body. He remembers being moved and filled with light - a light that has guided his desire to explore the truth that lies in life, in music, and in himself. It’s the light that fuels his need to connect with audiences and to share interpretations that demand a full commitment to emotional expression - and it’s what’s propelling his international career as a soloist and chamber musician. Go has performed across three continents, making appearances at the Berliner Philharmonie, Cadogan, Carnegie Hall, Flagey Studios, and Konzerthaus Berlin. As an avid chamber musician, Go has received invitations to festivals including the Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival, IMS Prussia Cove, Kronberg Academy, Krzyzowa Music, Mendelssohn on Mull, Music Academy of the West, Ravinia's Steans Institute of Music, Tsinandali Festival, and Yellow Barn, and his chamber partners amongst others include Jonathan Biss, Glenn Dicterow, Miriam Fried, David Geber, Ida Kavafian, Richard O’Neill, Daniel Philips, Rachel Podger, Wolfgang Redik, Fazil Say, Barry Shiffman, and Jean-Claude Vanden Eynden. Go’s 24-25 season includes appearances at Big Lake Arts, Caledon Music Festival, Kallos Chamber Music Series, Music & Beyond, and a western-Canada tour as a Debut Atlantic artist. With the generous support of Canada Council for the Arts and Ontario Arts Council, Go is looking forward to recording his debut album, HAN. Go’s education took place in six institutions across five countries, regularly participating in masterclasses with Steven Isserlis, Ferenc Rados, Rita Wagner, Frans Helmerson, and Ralph Kirshbaum. Daniel received a Bachelor of Music from the Manhattan School of Music under the tutelage of Julia Lichten and David Geber, a Master of Music at the Hochschule für Musik 'Hanns Eisler' Berlin in the class of Nicolas Altstaedt, and as a recipient of the prestigious Bicentenary Award and the Drake Calleja Trust Award, Daniel completed an Advanced Diploma at the Royal Academy of Music. During the 2021-22 season, Daniel was an artist-in-residence at the coveted Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel working closely with Gary Hoffman. During the 2022-23 season, Daniel held a fellowship position at the Royal Conservatory of Music’s Rebanks Family Fellowship and International Residency Program. Daniel performs on a cello made by Antonio & Rafaelle Gagliano, Naples ca. 1830, generously on loan by CANIMEX INC., from Drummondville (Quebec), Canada. Benjamin Smith - Piano Described as a “thoughtful and immensely exciting performer” with “scintillating technique” (Barrie Examiner), pianist Benjamin Smith has performed as soloist and chamber musician across Canada, the United States, and Mexico. He has been a laureate of numerous competitions, including the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition, and the CMC Stepping Stone Competition. Guest appearances include the Stony Brook Symphony Orchestra, the New Juilliard Ensemble, the Las Vegas Young Artists Orchestra, the Ontario Philharmonic, Orchestra London, the Burlington Symphony, and the Hart House Orchestra. As soloist, his repertoire includes several rarities, such as the Schoenberg and Schnittke piano concertos. Festival performances include repeat appearances at Toronto Summer Music, Music Niagara, and New Park (Ithaca, NY). American performances include recitals for the Texas Chopin Society and Chicago’s Landowska Harpsichord Society. Recent seasons have seen two concerts in Carnegie Hall: once as soloist in Gershwin’s Rhapsody In Blue with the Hart House Orchestra, and previously in recital with Canadian cellist Dongkyun An. A disc with Mr. An of Saint-Saens, Schumann, and Beethoven is currently available on most streaming platforms. Devoting considerable time to chamber music, Ben has been heard nationally on CBC Music, as well as radio broadcasts in the UK. He has partnered in recital with a myriad of renowned artists, as well as with ensembles such as the Penderecki, Cecilia, Annex, and Tokai string quartets. For two seasons he performed as one-third of the Israelievitch-Smith-Ahn piano trio, and has recently been playing as a member of the Andromeda piano trio. Dr. Smith currently serves on the faculties of both the Glenn Gould School (GGS) and the Taylor Young Artist Academy at the Royal Conservatory. His principal teachers have included Andrea Battista, James Anagnoson, Julian Martin, and Christina Dahl. Along with a DMA from Stony Brook University, he holds a Bachelors degree from the University of Toronto, an Artist Diploma from the GGS, and a Masters from Juilliard.
