The Abbey Hotel

I stayed at the Abbey for two night for my wedding The room was great , clean , bright and had everything we needed It even had sky available on the tv The bathroom was a good size and again clean and functional The morning of the wedding all my bridesmaids and 4 little flower girls came to get ready with me This was not a problem at all The team were fantastic and very helpful When we left the room to go to the wedding we rushed out and left the room in a bit of a mess When we arrived back my best friend needed to go to the room to find it had been completely sorted and tidied so when me and my husband went up that evening it was all ready for our arrival They gave us a room at the back of the hotel that led into the garden which again was perfect , it meant anyone of my party that wanted to use the room could get access easily We had breakfast the next morning and both being vegetarian were a little worried it may be bland as some can be but this was great Fresh, hot and exactly what we needed to start the day It’s a great place and a great location Thank you
Powdermills Country House Hotel

We chose the Powder Mill to celebrate our 30th Wedding Anniversary and had a mixed experience. Let me start with the positives. It is a charming hotel with a lot of Character. Our room was spacious and the bed comfortable. We had an excellent meal in the restaurant and a lovely breakfast. The staff were attentive and friendly. Now for the bad stuff. When we entered our room we were overpowered by the awful stench of drains! I am not exaggerating the smell was really bad. We opened the patio doors but the smell lingered and did not dissipate. The source was easily found by following our noses into the bathroom. The water drain in the shower had hair and a lot of grey sludge in it. It had clearly not been cleaned for a very long time! Basic housekeeping you would have thought. I reported it to reception and received an apology and was told that it would be reported. But he did not seem shocked as I'm sure it must have been reported before. As I walked away from reception I heard the next customer report a similar experience. We had discovered that there was not a single towel in our room, again basic housekeeping. I went to reception to report this and request that the omission be rectified. The young lady went into the next room and upon her return I expected to be told that ”housekeeping had been notified and towels would immediately be sent to our room”. Imagine my surprise when I was presented with a pile of towels that I was expected to carry the 200 yards back to my room. A walk that was outside and up a long flight of steps! As mentioned above our meal in the restaurant was lovely but the service was extremely slow. There was a corporate event taking place in the next room and that clearly was given priority. After ordering our desserts a waitress came over apologised that there would be a delay and admitted that it was because the kitchen had a corporate event to deal with. The delays were not a problem as we enjoy each others company and were after all celebrating our anniversary.

The property is very convenient for National Trust visits, and onsite parking behind the premises is very convenient. Check in until 10pm is handy too as we arrived at 21:59 due to traffic conditions. I already knew that if we were in the attic that our room would likely be sub-par. We were, and it was. The attic landing is musty, doors and ceilings very low, very much feeling like servants quarters. the hotel management are making an effort with redecoration, but this cannot hide the fact that fixtures and fittings need replacing too. Water pressure is so low in the attic that showering is impossible, so set the bath running ahead of time if you want to be clean. My booking showed a photo of a four-poster bed - nope, a double pushed up against the wall for no apparent reason is what we had in a room big enough to be laid out better. We paid under £45 on this occasion, and at that price would stay again. The Italian Restaurant on the ground floor serves breakfast nice and early. To check out, simply drop your key in the box outside the building.
