Waroeng Garoes

At five in the morning, I rode a motorcycle for more than 50 kilometers from Banyuwangi to the foot of Mount Ijen, and then hiked for three hours to climb up to the crater. Ijen is an active volcano, with a bizarre bottom and no grass growing on the top near the crater.
Yellow smoke emanated from the blue lake in the volcano. I didn&#39;t wear a gas mask the whole time, and the air was filled with a strong smell of sulfur. Just hiking is enough to make you breathless. Indonesians living in Ijen have to carry sulfur blocks weighing 70 to 80 kilograms up and down the volcano every day. Their average life expectancy is only about 40 years old.
