Desert Solitaire - The Namibian Stopover 'Solitaire' — traveler post in Solitaire

Desert Solitaire - The Namibian Stopover 'Solitaire'

On the long journey through the vast desert from the capital of Namibia, there is a small town that seems unavoidable for refueling, filling the stomach, shopping, activities, and convenience, and that is the town named after the Solitaire game in the Windows operating system. Solitaire literally means single-player card games or peg solitaire, and the reason why this town is named as such is probably due to its geographical location. It's like a lonely chess piece in the vast desert, and at the same time, it serves as a transit rest stop connecting Windhoek and the Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert Park. Solitaire is so small that it only consists of a few rows of bungalows, and the tallest structures are probably the wind turbine and the water tower. There is a church, but without the high steps, a rider could just whizz past the front door. Around the cacti, there are piles of old car shells of various types, which seem a bit out of place. However, it is this creative combination of old cars + cacti + desert that gives this town closest to the entrance of the red desert a Western flair, bringing a sense of novelty and pleasure to those who rest here briefly. For travelers, any geographical marker is of utmost importance. In China, there are many markers for the Tropic of Cancer, and Namibia spans the Tropic of Capricorn at 23°26′S, which also has a marker for photo opportunities. The Tropic of Capricorn marker here is quite low, and most people can reach it. Even if they can't, there is a large rock placed underneath, possibly for the shorter folks. Because it's low, the Tropic of Capricorn marker here is filled with names and covered with stickers, bustling with popularity. It seems to have become a part of the culture of the Tropic of Capricorn, as everyone passing by will come to check in, almost like a pilgrimage. In this long and hasty journey of life, through toil and dust, with passion in the heart and a gleam in the eye, wherever you find what you love, there blooms a path of flowers.

Solitaire – a rest stop on the way to Sossusvlei

Traveling from Windhoek, Namibia, to the Sossusvlei red desert, the town of Solitaire serves as a crucial transit and supply stop in the vast desert. We arrived at the town just after 1:00 PM; after a long, bumpy morning on the road, we were relieved to finally find a place to eat and use the restroom. 🌟🌟🌟 The town sits on a flat plateau desert plain, surrounded by vast gravel plains and exposed rocky foothills, with the rugged silhouette of the Rand Mountains visible in the distance. 🌟🌟🌟 This is a semi-arid ecological zone, with the surface scattered with drought-resistant camel thorn trees, aloe, and sparse grasslands. It is said that wildlife adapted to extreme environments, such as oryx, springbok, and desert ostriches, can be found here, but we didn't see any during our short stay. 🌟🌟🌟 The heart of the town is a cafe and bakery, which is its soul. It is famous throughout Namibia for its freshly baked apple pie and also offers some Western-style fast food and light meals. A simple meal paired with pour-over coffee is a true delight for travelers who have been bumping along the road for so long. 🌟🌟🌟 The town has a gas station that provides gasoline, diesel, and tire repair and replacement services. There is also a campsite and a small shop nearby. Dozens of vintage, abandoned classic cars, with their rusty frames, dead wood, and yellow sand, create a visually striking landscape.

Stylish Lodge Amid Stunning Scenery in Namibia

Namib Naukluft Lodge 🏕️ As a base for my long-awaited trip to Sossusvlei, I stayed at this special lodge for just two nights! Since there are no restaurants nearby, the lodge offers a full-course dinner. Initially, I thought, "It's just lodge food, right?" But to my surprise, the meals were incredibly delicious! 😭 The rooms were charming and natural, and waking up surrounded by breathtaking nature was simply the best. 🌄 Wild animals were right nearby, making the entire lodge feel like a safari park. 🦓🦌 During the hot daytime, I relaxed in the pool, and at night, I chilled under a sky full of stars with a drink in hand. 🍺 Namibia started off on an amazing note...

Namib Desert

The Namib Desert is actually quite large, divided into various areas, including national parks and private reserves. The eastern edge is more soil-rich, while the central area and the coast become sandier. It's not entirely barren; there are still quite a few drought-resistant plants within it.

BorussiaDortmundBorussiaDortmund

Deadvlei

Due to global climate change, Death Valley isn't actually as "dead" as it seems. In this unusual year where rain fell even during the dry season, small puddles and living plants still exist in Death Valley; it's just that the famous dead trees have been dead for over a century.

The Sossus Salt Flats are the most well-known area in the entire Namib Desert, home to famous Dune 45 and Death Valley. However, the salt flats actually have a considerable amount of vegetation, and can even form seasonal oases when it rains.
