Nagoya Brief Guide

Nagoya is located in the center of Japan, between Tokyo and the cities of Osaka and Kyoto. It serves as a metaphorical and literal bridge between Eastern and Western Japan. The ancient history here runs deep, being the birth place of Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu, three heroes of Japan’s Warring States Period. If you want to feel as though you live in the time of heroes, pay a visit to Nagoya Castle. Atsuta Shrine and Osu Kannon Temple are excellent locations to learn about the culture of Japan. If you feel more at home in modernity, then the avant-garde Oasis 21 shopping center and the prosperous Sakae District are great locations for shopping and snacking alike. JR Central Tower is considered the gateway to Nagoya, a perfect destination for food, shopping and entertainment.

Nagoya Must-see Attractions

Nagoya is a vibrant Japanese city offering a rich tapestry of attractions, from the family-friendly Legoland Japan Resort and the historic Nagoya Castle to the marine wonders of the Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium, the spiritual serenity of Atsuta Jingu, and the cultural hub of Osu Kannon, each providing unique experiences that blend entertainment, history, and tradition.

Nagoya Food Guide

Nagoya's food scene is renowned for its unique and flavorful dishes such as Hitsumabushi with its multi-step eel experience, crispy Tebasaki chicken wings celebrated at an annual summit, the deep-fried Miso Katsu with its distinctive red miso sauce, the spicy and misnamed Taiwan Ramen, and the hearty Miso Nikomi Udon served bubbling hot in a donabe.

Nagoya Transportation

Nagoya's transportation infrastructure is integral to its function as a central hub in the Chubu region of Japan, with Nagoya Station and Chubu Centrair International Airport being the primary gateways for intercity travel. Nagoya Station, one of the world's largest train stations building by floor area, is a major railway station in Nakamura-ku, Nagoya. It serves as a key junction for multiple JR Central lines, including the Tōkaidō Shinkansen, Tōkaidō Main Line, Chūō Main Line, and Kansai Main Line, connecting Nagoya to cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. To reach the city from Nagoya Station, travelers can utilize the Aonami Line (AN01) for the Nagoya International Exhibition Hall or the Nagoya Subway's Higashiyama Line (H08) and Sakura-dōri Line (S02). Chubu Centrair International Airport, located on an artificial island in Ise Bay, is the main international gateway for the region. The airport is well-connected to Nagoya and surrounding areas by train, with the Meitetsu Railways providing the fastest connection to the city center via the μ-SKY Limited Express train. Buses and taxis are also available for transfers to the city.

Nagoya Where to Stay

Nagoya is a dynamic city in Japan that offers a diverse range of accommodation options for travelers. The city's hotels are spread across several key areas, each with its own unique appeal and convenience for visitors.

Nagoya Best Time to Visit

The optimal time to visit Nagoya is during the spring months of April and May, as well as the autumn months of September and October. These periods are characterized by pleasant temperatures and less rainfall, making it ideal for sightseeing and enjoying the city's natural beauty, such as the cherry blossoms in spring and the vibrant red maple leaves in fall.

Nagoya Travel Tips

1. Closed on Mondays: Many museums and attractions in Nagoya, including the Nagoya City Art Museum, are closed on Mondays (or the next day if Monday is a National holiday), New Year Holidays, and some temporary closing days. Plan your itinerary accordingly to avoid any inconvenience. 2. Onsen Tattoo Policy: Be aware that many public baths and onsen in Nagoya prohibit entry for people with visible tattoos due to their association with organized crime in Japan. 3. Strict Smoking Regulations: Smoking is prohibited in many public areas in Nagoya, including sidewalks and streets. Look for designated smoking areas and avoid smoking on the streets. Violating these regulations can result in fines.

Nagoya Useful Guide

In Nagoya, as in the rest of Japan, the predominant language is Japanese, a language isolate with significant Chinese influence. While regional languages like the Ryukyuan languages exist, they are endangered and not widely spoken. Translation services and language apps can assist visitors, and English is commonly taught in schools, providing a basic means of communication for many locals. To overcome language barriers, travelers can use simple Japanese phrases, gestures, and facial expressions.

珍珠仔麻麻:“It's definitely worth a visit. I haven't been to many theme parks in China, but the lines at every one of them are incredibly long. At Lego Nagoya, the only time I waited longer than ten minutes was because I was stuck with a speed pass. Almost every ride I tried only had a five-minute line. Don't be too upset if you can't get a reservation at this water park. For younger children, Duplo Valley is right at the entrance for water play. Both Squid Surf and Splash Wars involve water play. I recommend doing both water rides in a row, changing clothes afterward to avoid getting wet. There are plenty of rest areas in the park, so you don't have to worry about running out of energy. I'll definitely go again.”

The dolphins in the North Building are lovely. The dolphin show is outdoors and is good, but the time is a bit short and I can't see enough.”

The chicken wings are a bit sweet, the chicken dumplings are good, for Chinese tourists who are used to McDonald's fried chicken and Korean fried chicken, it feels just average. But there are many Japanese office workers coming to this store, it was full in a short time, and there are still people waiting for reservations, and they must finish their meals before the next table reservation time, which shows that this store is quite popular in the local area.”

Haruki: I mean - other than taking the cake to the store to be cut, or buying Yunnan pickles in a group and making an appointment to share the spoils in the store. Me: It doesn’t have to be so harsh. Haruki: We are going to serve new dishes, you know, come and try them. Me: Got it, I’m missing Instagram promotional photos. I bring my own camera, take photos and retouch them myself, and pay for them myself. Haruki: It doesn’t have to be so unpleasant. Eat new dishes! ! Enomoto: This is the soft and glutinous cheek meat, this is the beef tongue that has been matured for thirty days, this is the small chicken drumstick that is used to make up for the meal, and this is the soup stock on top, this is broad beans, potatoes, onions, carrots, kohlrabi, zucchini, broccoli… Me: I don’t know how big a game you gave me. Haruki: Meat won’t even close your mouth. Eat the boiled vegetables you want. The boiled vegetables are delicious, with the taste of fresh and sweet clear soup. Kohlrabi, fragrant and fragrant. Sweet onions, fragrant and fragrant. Zucchini, fragrant. I ate this plate of spring. The cheek meat is soft and waxy, full of gelatin, and it feels like eating a big mouthful of meat. Beef tongue is neither soft nor crispy. It has a very elastic texture after cooking, which is valuable! A few chicken drumsticks. Haruki: How about it. Me: Don’t put this, the price will drop. Chunshu rubbed his hands: What do you think is the appropriate price? Me: I’m willing to give you 3,500 yen. Haruki: Then! So expensive! ! Hey Enomoto, did you hear that? She is willing to give 3500! Enomoto: Then! So expensive! ! After that, we will charge her 3,500! Me: ...You two are so worthless. I also want broad bean pasta, 40g. The broad bean pasta is as good as ever. Roasted broad beans, whitebait, and cherry tomatoes. In spring, there are bamboo shoots, fluorescent squid, and mullet roe. It's moist, refreshing, seasonal pasta that I took time to think about. The most valuable thing about Haruki (or chef) is his willingness to think. Haruki: I heard that you recommend spicy stir-fried eggplant pasta to others every day, which made me fry the eggplant until my hand broke, so I ended up eating boiled vegetables and broad bean pasta. Me: ...That’s different. If I have a meal once in a while, I choose roast beef with eggplant pasta and tiramisu. Who eats this every day?”

The receptionist was so handsome, like the male lead in a Japanese drama! I was not impressed when the set meal was served, but when I took the first bite, my taste buds started dancing. The waiter handed us menus while we waited, and then he came to take the order. A few minutes later, I was seated. A few minutes later, the food came. To be honest, I just pointed at the pictures on the menu (not ordering directly) because the menu was all in Japanese. Thank goodness they put the pictures up. The food was delicious.
