Sigiriya, Sri Lanka | Known as the eighth wonder of the world! — traveler post in Colombo

Sigiriya, Sri Lanka | Known as the eighth wonder of the world!

In the jungles of Sri Lanka, a massive rock rises from nowhere. In the 5th century, a king built a palace in the sky atop the cliff 🏯 The moment you reach the top, the entire tropical forest unfolds before your eyes—it's so breathtaking it gives you goosebumps! Here is the ultimate guide to Sigiriya, a must-visit in Sri Lanka. Read this to save time and avoid common mistakes! 📌 Basic info | Read this first 📍 Name: Sigiriya ⏰ Hours: 7:00 AM–6:30 PM (ticket sales stop at 5:30 PM). We recommend setting aside 3–4 hours for your visit. 🎫 Admission: Approx. US$30 for foreign adults. You can pay in USD or LKR on-site, but cash is preferred, so please have it ready in advance. ✅ Best time to visit: Dry season from December to April, with less rain. Try to arrive right when it opens at 7:00 AM to avoid the midday heat and large tour groups! 🚗 How to get there 1. Private car/shared ride (highly recommended): About 2.5 hours from Kandy, 20 minutes from Dambulla. The best choice for a day trip. 2. Public bus: Colombo to Dambulla, then transfer to a minibus to the Sigiriya junction, followed by a tuk-tuk. This takes more time. 3. Park entrance: There is a distance from the main gate to the actual trailhead. You can take a park shuttle for 300 LKR round trip if you prefer not to walk. 🗺️ Recommended route (no backtracking) Water Gardens > Moat 🌊 > Mirror Wall > Spiral Staircase & Frescoes 🖼️ > Lion Paws Platform > Cliffside Metal Staircase > Palace ruins at the summit. Return via the same path. ✅ Key highlights: 1. Water Gardens: Symmetrical pools and gardens at the entrance with a thousand-year-old drainage system. The morning light is incredibly soft. 2. Mirror Wall: Polished like a mirror in ancient times, it features poems left by ancient visitors. Full of history. 3. Frescoes of Maidens ✨: Thousand-year-old colorful murals that are still vibrant! ⚠️ Photography is strictly prohibited here, and no flash is allowed. Please follow the rules. 4. Lion Paws Platform: The iconic photo spot at Sigiriya! Only the two giant paws of the massive stone lion remain. It's a great place for photos. 5. Summit ruins: Overlook the endless green jungle from the top. As the wind blows through the forest, you'll instantly understand why this is called a palace in the sky. 📸 Best photo spots ✔️ Lion Paws Platform: Shoot upwards at the rock formation for an atmospheric shot. ✔️ Summit platform: Overlook the entire jungle for panoramic shots. ✔️ [Must-visit! Pidurangala Rock]: A neighboring hill that requires a separate ticket. It's the best spot to photograph the full panoramic view of Sigiriya. Many viral photos are taken here! If you aren't up for the climb at Sigiriya, you can just hike here for the view. 🎒 Essential packing list (very important) ✅ Sneakers!!! Do not wear flip-flops or sandals. The metal staircase in the second half is very hot, steep, and slippery. ✅ At least 1.5L of drinking water. Water is expensive on the mountain. ✅ High-SPF sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses. The tropical sun is extremely intense. ✅ A light jacket, as it's windy at the summit; wear light, breathable clothing. ✅ Small snacks, as climbing is physically demanding. ⚠️ Drones are not recommended; flying drones is prohibited within the scenic area. ⚠️ Tips to avoid pitfalls | Hard-earned experience 1. Beware of "free guides" who approach you at the entrance. They will demand a high tip after the tour. If you need a guide, hire one at the official ticket counter. 2. Watch out for monkeys 🐒! They will snatch bags, drinks, and food. Do not feed them and avoid carrying plastic bags. 3. Photography is strictly prohibited in the fresco area. You will be fined if caught. 4. The stairs are steep. Seniors and those with knee issues should pace themselves. Rest if you get tired; don't push yourself. 5. There are very few restrooms inside the scenic area. Use the restroom before entering. 💡 Itinerary suggestions Sigiriya + Dambulla Cave Temple. These two attractions are very close to each other and can be arranged as a one-day trip—a classic combination for the Cultural Triangle! 💬 Question for you: Do you dare to challenge the steep metal staircase at Sigiriya? Which day of your Sri Lanka trip do you plan to visit Sigiriya? Let's chat in the comments section 👇

Strolling through Colombo | Understanding Sri Lanka's past and present amidst the urban hustle — traveler post in Colombo

Strolling through Colombo | Understanding Sri Lanka's past and present amidst the urban hustle

Sri Lanka - Colombo It may lack the heavy, weathered history of an ancient city, but it weaves colonial relics, modern skyscrapers, Buddhist faith, and the Indian Ocean coastline into the fabric of this harbor city. The waters of Beira Lake ripple gently, reflecting the city's skyscrapers, while red boats drift quietly. On one side lies a bustling, modern skyline; on the other, lush tropical greenery. The lake serves as a divider between the noise and the tranquility. Walking the city streets, you will encounter buildings of diverse styles at every turn. Vintage colonial structures stand solemn and dignified, their columns and reliefs recounting history. Stone lions at Independence Square guard the monument, preserving the nation's memories of independence, while the Sri Lankan flag waves proudly at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall. At street corners, ancient temples with Buddha statues and curling incense smoke show how deeply Buddhist culture permeates the entire city. The most anticipated experience is undoubtedly the famous seaside train. The tracks hug the Indian Ocean coastline, with waves crashing just beside them. As the train moves slowly along the coast, the sea, roads, and city buildings unfold side by side—a romantic scene unique to Colombo. Kollupitiya Station marks the beginning of the most scenic section of this seaside journey. On the other side of the city lies Galle Face Green. With the sea breeze whistling and the lighthouse standing quietly, you can look out toward the modern Port City. Here, new and old architecture collide under the backdrop of dark clouds and blue skies, allowing you to truly feel the city's vibrant growth. Colombo is not a city that stuns you at first glance; it is best suited for a leisurely stroll. There is no need to rush your itinerary. Wander between the squares, lakes, and coastlines to experience the unique character of this Indian Ocean island nation, where tradition and modernity are beautifully intertwined.

A suite blooming with bougainvillea. — traveler post in Colombo

A suite blooming with bougainvillea.

This mansion in Colombo was renovated in 1986 by Sri Lanka's legendary architect, Geoffrey Bawa 🇱🇰 This time, I stayed in the Bougainvillea Suite—an incredibly luxurious space where you get almost the entire second floor all to yourself 🌺 The spacious interior is filled with Bawa’s signature architectural details, making it feel less like a hotel room and more like you're actually "living in Bawa’s world" 🥹 True to its name, the private balcony is draped in stunning bougainvillea ✨ Since the private area starts right from the first-floor staircase, the layout feels exceptionally vast 🔑 I honestly felt spoiled having this entire Bawa masterpiece all to myself 🥹 One thing to note: unlike typical hotels, you can't stay here year-round. The owner, who lives in the UK, returns to Sri Lanka every August, so the house is unavailable for guests during that month. Even if you're dying to stay, bookings depend on the timing, so if you're visiting specifically for the Bawa experience, be sure to check availability in advance 👀 The magic of De Saram House isn't about overt luxury; it’s about experiencing the very spaces Bawa held dear. From the art and furniture to the play of light and the seamless connection with the garden, every detail is intentional. For architecture lovers, it’s an absolute dream 🏛️🌿 📍 46/54, De Saram Road, Colombo 7, Sri Lanka ⏰ in 14:00 / out 12:00 🗓️ Unavailable in August 🔑 Bougainvillea Suite 💰 23,500 JPY

At the top of Sigiriya Rock, I heard the breath of a thousand years ago — traveler post in Colombo

At the top of Sigiriya Rock, I heard the breath of a thousand years ago

Climbing the eighth wonder of the world, Sigiriya Rock, I held my breath before the millennium-old frescoes; following an ox cart through golden rice fields, I lost myself in faith amid the flames of the Kandy dance. This is not just a trip, but a soul dialogue with ancient Ceylon. At five in the morning, I stood at the foot of the eighth wonder of the world. Before dawn, the outline of Sigiriya Rock already emerged from the jungle—a 200-meter-high giant rock, like a sword pulled from the earth. I took a deep breath and began the climb. 1,200 steps, each one bringing me closer to the palace of King Kassapa from 1,500 years ago. When passing the famous fresco gallery, I paused—those vividly colored paintings of court ladies have quietly gazed at every onlooker for 15 centuries. The pigments on the cliff have long been lost, and no one knows why they have not faded over a thousand years. 📸 Photo Tips: Arrive before 7 a.m. for the best light; the east side of the rock is bathed in golden warm light. Use a telephoto lens for panoramic shots and a wide-angle lens to capture climbers for scale, doubling the sense of awe. Finally standing at the summit, tropical jungle stretched to the horizon in all directions. I suddenly understood why the king chose this place—to rule the world while being isolated from it. 💡 Avoid Pitfalls Tips: Be sure to wear non-slip sports shoes! The rock steps are steep, especially near the fresco area where you climb almost iron ladders. Bring enough drinking water; there are no supply points on the mountain. Going early in the morning helps avoid the midday heat. In the sound of the Temple of the Tooth’s bell, faith takes shape. Heading south from Sigiriya to Kandy, the Temple of the Tooth is the heart of this sacred city. At dusk, I followed the crowd of white-clad pilgrims into the temple. The sound of drums came from deep inside, and the air was filled with the scent of coconut oil and lotus flowers. The golden stupa of the Temple of the Tooth lit up in the twilight. At that moment, the Sri Lankan elder beside me clasped his hands and his eyes glistened with tears. This temple houses the tooth relic of Gautama Buddha and is the core of Buddhist faith in Sri Lanka. Every year during the Esala Perahera festival, the entire city comes alive. Even outside festival days, the daily morning and evening worship ceremonies are worth witnessing—the devotion makes you unconsciously tread lightly. 📸 Photo Tips: Frame the temple’s exterior focusing on the golden stupa; it’s most beautiful when lit at night. Photography of Buddha statues inside is prohibited, but the exterior and courtyard are free to shoot. Wearing white clothing inside is basic etiquette. The moment I sat on the ox cart, time finally slowed down. In a village near Sigiriya, I boarded a traditional ox cart. No engine noise, only the rustling of hooves on the dirt road. The wheels rolled over golden rice fields, with coconut groves and cooking smoke in the distance. The elderly cart driver was in no hurry, occasionally stopping to chat in Sinhala with people by the roadside. I swayed gently through the entire village. Later, I entered a household where the hostess taught me to grind rice flour with a stone mortar. Flames licked the black clay pot on the stove, and coconut milk bubbled in the curry. This meal had no menu or plating but was the most flavorful of my entire journey. 💡 Money-Saving Tips: The ox cart experience is usually included in the itinerary with no extra charge. It’s recommended to bring small gifts (stationery, candy) for the host family—they will be very happy. In the flames and drumbeats, the Kandy dance revealed its soul. At nightfall by Kandy Lake’s theater, the drums suddenly sounded. Dancers wore white traditional costumes, flames spinning atop their heads, their feet stepping out complex rhythms to the drumbeats. The Kandy dance is one of Sri Lanka’s oldest dance forms, each movement telling a mythological story. The most stunning was the firewalking performance—the performers walked barefoot over glowing embers, expression unchanged. The audience gasped, but the Sri Lankan girl beside me clapped proudly, as if watching her brother’s talent show. 📸 Photo Tips: The fire dance segment is the best time to shoot; use burst mode to capture the flames’ spinning trails. Turn off the flash to avoid disturbing performers and to preserve the atmosphere. Those little unexpected joys not on the itinerary. While wandering Colombo’s streets, I stumbled upon an unknown small temple where orange-robed monks walked barefoot past colorful mural walls—a scene as quiet as an oil painting. At a tea plantation, a Tamil girl picking tea leaves smiled and taught me how to judge tender leaves—“Only pick the top three leaves, leave the rest for tomorrow.” And the children chasing us at the village entrance, they had nothing yet seemed to lack nothing. In Conclusion What moved me most on this Ceylon trip was not the grandeur of any single attraction, but the things you can only feel by slowing down—the rhythm of the ox cart, the temple bells, the tea pickers’ smiles. If you want to explore Sri Lanka this way, there is a route that connects millennium-old sites with these unexpected little beauties, with a custom itinerary pace and a Chinese-speaking guide accompanying you to explain the story behind every stone, so you don’t have to worry about transportation or connections. After all, some journeys are meant to make you truly slow down. Sri Lanka · Asia · Sigiriya Rock · Temple of the Tooth · Kandy Lake · Colombo · Western Province · Trincomalee · Eastern Province

Sri Lanka 5 Days|All-in-One Mangrove Leopard Chase and Whale Watching — traveler post in Colombo

Sri Lanka 5 Days|All-in-One Mangrove Leopard Chase and Whale Watching

5 days and 4 nights private tour in Sri Lanka, including mangrove boat rides, sea turtle releases, Yala leopard tracking, Mirissa blue whale watching, Galle Fort sunset, coastal train rides... Every day brings a new surprise! Detailed itinerary + photo tips are ready, just save it if you're planning to go! This 5-day, 4-night trip to Sri Lanka is one where I got to see everything I wanted. Up close crocodile watching in the mangroves, personally releasing baby sea turtles into the ocean, leopard tracking in Yala jungle, whale watching at sea, riding the same coastal train as in Spirited Away... The schedule is tight but not rushed, waking up each day full of anticipation. Here’s the full itinerary and photo tips for your reference if you’re preparing to go 👇 📅 Day 1|Arrive in Colombo Arrive in Colombo, private transfer straight to the hotel. If you arrive early, you can take an evening stroll at Galle Face Green, where the sea breeze is especially pleasant and you can catch a stunning sunset. Don’t plan too many activities on the first day; adjusting to the time difference and climate is most important. 📸 Photo Tips: The sunset at Galle Face Green is very photogenic; a wide-angle lens is recommended. 📅 Day 2|Mangroves + Sea Turtles + Galle Fort Today is an "eco day" with a full experience! In the morning, take a small boat through the Bentota mangroves, surrounded by dense mangrove trees. You can see crocodiles sunbathing in the water, kingfishers flying on branches, and monkeys jumping in the trees. The whole river looks like a green tunnel, very mysterious. Then visit the sea turtle conservation center, home to different species of turtles. The highlight is personally releasing newly hatched baby turtles into the sea. Watching the tiny ones slowly crawl toward the ocean is truly touching 🥹 In the afternoon, head to Galle Fort, a 400-year-old Dutch colonial city. You can freely walk on the city walls, see the lighthouse, churches, and old houses—every corner is very photogenic. Watch the sunset on the walls as the sky turns golden red. Stay overnight at Shangri-La Hambantota, a seaside hotel with new and comfortable facilities. 📅 Day 3|Yala Safari Leopard Chase 🐆 Today is the wildest day! Set off early around 5 a.m. to Yala National Park, riding an open jeep into the jungle. Early morning is when animals are most active, the air is cool, and the light is soft, giving the best chance to see leopards. Our driver was very experienced, tracking footprints and calls to take us deep into the jungle. First, we saw a herd of elephants bathing by a pond, then—on a big tree, a leopard! It was lazily lying there, completely ignoring us. Besides leopards and elephants, we also saw peacocks fanning their tails, crocodiles resting on rocks, and spotted deer running... We were screaming all morning. 📸 Safari Photo Tips: Bring a telephoto lens (200mm or longer is best) Wear dark-colored clothes, avoid bright colors Best to enter the park at 5:30 a.m. when animals are active Jeep rides are bumpy, turn on camera stabilization In the afternoon, head to Mirissa and check into the Marriott Resort by the sea. Relax at the hotel and watch the sunset, switching from "wild" to "luxury." 📅 Day 4|Whale Watching + Coastal Train Wake up at 4 a.m. for whale watching! We set off before dawn. After about an hour at sea, someone suddenly shouted "Whale!"—a huge blue whale surfaced beside the boat, spraying a water spout several meters high. It slowly rolled over, showing its massive tail, then dived into the deep sea. The whole scene lasted less than two minutes, but my hands were shaking. On the way back, we encountered a large group of spinner dolphins, dozens jumping beside the boat—so lucky! Whale Watching Tips: Go to bed early the night before, as you need to wake at 4 a.m. Take seasickness medicine in advance; the sea can be rough Bring telephoto lens + sunscreen; UV rays are strong at sea Wear non-slip shoes; the deck can be wet In the afternoon, ride the coastal train—the same one featured in Spirited Away! The tracks run right along the coastline with the Indian Ocean outside the window. Sitting by the door, feeling the sea breeze, it’s truly romantic. Then tour Colombo city, visit Independence Square and Lotus Tower, before transfer to the airport for your flight home. 💡 Practical Tips ✅ Best season: November to April (whale watching season + dry season) ✅ Clothing: Wear dark long sleeves for safari; cover knees and shoulders when entering temples ✅ Sunscreen: SPF50+ is essential throughout the trip ✅ Seasickness medicine: May be needed for whale watching and mangrove tours ✅ Photography gear: Telephoto for animals + wide-angle for landscapes ✅ Visa: E-visa, apply at least 3 days in advance Location Tags Bentota Mangroves Galle Fort Clock Tower Yala National Park · Sri Lanka Mirissa Beach Sri Lanka Coastal Train Colombo · Western Province

Colombo National Museum

If you want to learn about the history of Sri Lanka this is a great place to start. The museum shows pre-historic finds and the earliest civilization of Sri Lanka as well as the Colonial era and the history or resistance to those colonial powers. As a history teacher I really enjoyed the museum.

It takes about 10 minutes to walk from the museum. This is a large square. It is said that it was the place where independence celebrations were held. It has good greening and is very suitable. Take a walk here at dusk.

Colombo Dehiwala Zoological Gardens

I stayed here with my family for the weekend and it was a good experience. Although it was very crowded during the weekend, the staff tried their best to keep the park clean. I haven't seen any major developments in this zoo, when I look back at my childhood, I remember there were more animals than there are now, and the animals are probably not well maintained. There is a children's play area in the zoo, which is very fun. I think zoos are national treasures, so they need more attention.
