One of my favorite sightseeing spot in Tokyo — Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa. The huge red lantern hanging from the Kaminarimon Gate on the right side has become the symbol of Asakusa itself! 🏮 When you pass through the Kaminarimon Gate in Asakusa, you’ll arrive at one of the oldest and most famous shopping districts in Japan — Nakamise Dori. It’s an ideal shopping spot for traditional gifts and snacks, and of course these cute strawberry ‘dango’ caught my attention! 🍓 Had to queue for half an hour for these cute cakes. It is the oldest temple in Tokyo. During the Edo period, Tokugawa Ieyasu designated Asakusa Temple as the pilgrimage site for the Tokugawa shogunate, leading to the prosperity of the area around the temple. Besides the main hall of Asakusa Temple, there are many famous buildings and historical sites within the temple grounds, such as the five-story pagoda, and numerous scenic spots to enjoy. Every year around New Year's Day, the temple is crowded with worshippers. To the right upon entering Asakusa Temple, there is a large fountain. Named the 'Hand Washing Pond', its water is drinkable. ⛩️ Temple buildings: Kaminarimon, Treasure House Gate, Main Hall, Five-story Pagoda, Asakusa Shrine. Visitors at Asakusa Temple draw fortune slips by shaking a cylinder and picking a number, then finding the corresponding slip. The slip contains a Chinese poem with a Japanese explanation. People happily take home a slip indicating great fortune, while those dissatisfied with their slip tie it to a tree, hoping to avert misfortune. Asakusa Temple has a courtyard specifically for tying these slips, and the trees inside and outside the gates, as well as those around, are covered with these white strips of paper. The stream of visitors is endless, praying with sincerity. 🏷️ Tips for visiting 1. Near the Kaminarimon, there are rickshaw pullers dressed in traditional attire, bilingual in English and Japanese, generally charging 5000 yen per person (half an hour). 2. Asakusa Temple is illuminated at night after sunset until around 23:00, showcasing the main hall in a different light. 3. There are many specialty shops in Nakamise Shopping Street, and Ningyo-yaki is highly recommended. 4. Sensō-ji, officially known as Kinryū-zan Sensō-ji, is located in Asakusa 2-chome, Taito Ward, Tokyo, Japan, and is the oldest temple in Tokyo. On New Year's Eve, December 31st, the bell is rung 108 times according to Buddhist teachings, symbolizing the elimination of 108 worldly desires.
