#travelsafetytips Miss the Ferry, Miss the Night: Crossing Safely from Port Ellen Port Ellen, on the southern tip of Islay, is a charming harbor town—but it’s also a reminder that island transport runs on tight schedules, especially in autumn. On a trip in October, I watched a couple sprint toward the dock just as the last ferry pulled away. The wind had picked up, the crossing was rough, and there were no more sailings that night. They were stranded until morning. The ferry from Port Ellen to Kennacraig is the main link to the mainland, and services are less frequent in the off-season. I always checked the timetable in advance, arrived at least 30 minutes early, and built in a buffer for delays caused by weather. October on Islay can be wild—gale-force winds, rain, and rough seas are common. I packed waterproof gear, kept an eye on the forecast, and booked accommodation with flexibility in case crossings were canceled. Rental cars are available, but roads are narrow and dark at night. I stayed in a guesthouse in Port Ellen and explored the island’s distilleries and coastline. It’s a beautiful place, but island time is real. Plan your crossings carefully, and never assume there’s a later boat.
