I’ve wanted to drive the Going-to-the-Sun Road since I first watched the opening sequence of *The Shining*. There is something quite haunting and beautiful about how the road winds through the Montana mountains, and seeing it in person felt surreal.
We spent a few days exploring the park. A favourite spot of mine was Lake McDonald. The colourful pebbles under the water are incredibly grounding to sit by, and it is a lovely place to just breathe and listen to the water before the crowds arrive.
We did the hike up to Logan Pass. The views are stunning, but the parking situation there is quite stressful. If you aren't there before 7 am, it is nearly impossible to find a space, which I personally wouldn't recommend if you prefer a slower, more mindful morning. Taking the park shuttle is a much calmer alternative.
Just a small tip if you are visiting: make sure to carry bear spray. Coming from Ireland, the idea of hiking with bear spray took some getting used to, but it is essential for peace of mind on the trails.
