Safari vibes in New Zealand? 🦁 Yes please! Christchurch's Orana Wildlife Park totally blew us away with its troop of lively African animals — think lions, rhinos, cheetahs, and more (rarer finds for NZ!). Every critter seemed to be having the best day, roaming huge outdoor spaces and getting up close to visitors. 🦒😍
We kicked off super early at 793 McLeans Island Road, parked right at the entrance, and spent nearly three hours adventuring the full zoo circuit with barely a break. It’s a sprawling spot, so tip number one: absolutely load up your bag with snacks and water. There are picnic areas inside, but lines for café food get long on weekends. For animal photos, you’ll find plenty of action, so ready your camera — or just soak it in like we did!
Getting there: Driving is easiest, but you can grab a taxi or book direct shuttle services from central Christchurch. If you’re using trip.com, booking tickets ahead is smooth and saves time at entry.
Money & Weather: Admission was NZD$150 when we visited (check trip.com for bargains), and with New Zealand’s ever-changing skies, pack a light rain jacket and sunscreen. Orana’s open all year, 10:00–17:00.
Extra pro-tip: Go early for smaller crowds, and don’t miss the scheduled animal feedings — that’s when lions and cheetahs get closest!
