#underratedspots #germany

I recently took a day trip from Berlin to Magdeburg, and it turned out to be much more interesting than I expected. The train ride is easy and takes around 1.5 hours, which makes Magdeburg a very convenient option if you want to get out of Berlin for a day.

I’d recommend starting in the historic centre and walking towards Magdeburg Cathedral. The cathedral is one of the city’s main landmarks and, for me, one of the most impressive buildings to see during the trip. From there, continue towards the Kloster Unser Lieben Frauen, then walk through the city centre to the Green Citadel.

The Green Citadel was probably the most unusual building I saw in Magdeburg. It was designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, so it looks completely different from the surrounding architecture, with its colourful faƧade, uneven lines, towers and lots of greenery. I actually found myself walking around it several times because there were so many little details to notice.

After exploring the centre, I’d head towards the Elbe and spend some time walking along the river. This was one of my favourite parts of the day because the city suddenly feels much more open and peaceful. You can then continue towards the Sternbrücke, which is also where I found the best views for photos. If you want a nice panoramic shot of Magdeburg, I’d definitely make the detour to Sternbrücke Magdeburg.

For lunch, I’d simply stop somewhere in the city centre before continuing the walk. Magdeburg is compact enough that you can see a lot of the main sights on foot without constantly checking public transport.

My ideal one-day itinerary would be: arrive by train in the morning → Magdeburg Cathedral → Kloster Unser Lieben Frauen → Green Citadel → lunch in the centre → walk along the Elbe → Sternbrücke for the best photos → back to the centre and train to Berlin.

What I liked about Magdeburg was that it doesn’t feel overwhelming. You can see the major sights in one day, but there’s still enough variety to keep the walk interesting — historic buildings, unusual modern architecture, the river and plenty of open space. For an easy day away from Berlin, I thought it was definitely worth the trip.
