Highlights: Antigua Guatemala is located in the province of Zacatepex in southern Guatemala, about 40 kilometers southwest of the capital Guatemala City. In 1979, UNESCO listed Antigua Guatemala as a cultural heritage and included it on the World Heritage List. Antigua Guatemala has two parts, the old city and the new city. The old city was built in 1524. After the establishment of the Guatemalan metropolitan area, it was the capital in the 17th century. Due to repeated earthquake damage, in 1776, a new city was built 40 kilometers northeast of the city, which is now Guatemala City, the capital of Guatemala. After the reconstruction of Antigua Guatemala, it still reflects the style of the Spanish colonial city.
