West Lake

West Lake is undoubtedly the epitome of Hangzhou's beauty. The famous "Ten scenes of West Lake" surround its shores, where nature and culture complement each other, forming the core area of Hangzhou tourism. You don't need to visit every attraction - instead, spend half a day or a full day strolling along the lake. However you choose to enjoy it, the experience will surely lift your spirits. West Lake is the core attraction of Hangzhou, surrounded by clouds and mountains on three sides and the city on one side. The Su Causeway and Bai Causeway stretch across the lake, dividing it into several water areas. The lakeside scenery is highlighted by the "Ten Scenes of West Lake" from the Southern Song Dynasty, along with the later "New Ten Scenes" and "Three Additional Scenes," featuring over a hundred attractions along the shore and mountains. Pavilions, temples, pagodas, gardens, causeways, and islands complement the distant mountains and nearby waters, while legends like the Broken Bridge where Lady White Snake met Xu Xian add a layer of storytelling to the landscape. West Lake extends east from Songmuchang in Hangzhou and the north of Baolu Road turning to Shaoniangong Square, passing Baisha Road, Huancheng West Road, Hubin Road, and Nanshan Road to the south of Wansong Ridge, covering all attractions including Wu Mountain, Ziyang Mountain, and Yunju Mountain. To the south, it stretches from Gulou along the eastern foothills of Wu Mountain, Ziyang Mountain, and Yunju Mountain, passing Fengshanmen and Fenghuangshan Road, then following the West Lake water diversion channel to the north bank of the Qiantang River, turning to the Coral Sand Reservoir and ending north of Liufangling. To the west, it runs from Liufangling, Zhugan Mountain, Jiuqu Ridge, and Mingren Ridge to Meiren Peak, Beigaofeng, Lingfeng Mountain, and east of the ridge line of Laohe Mountain. To the north, it follows the foothills of Laohe Mountain (west wall of Zhejiang University), turns 30 m north of Qingzhiwu Road, connects to Yugu Road, Zhejiang University Road, and Shuguang Road, ending south of Songmuchang. West Lake has over 100 attractions, renowned for its "Ten scenes of West Lake", "New ten scenes of West Lake" and "Three reviews · Ten scenes of West Lake". West Lake overview You can explore West Lake on foot, by cruise, on electric bikes, via self-drive, or by riding. Among these, electric bikes are the most convenient and effortless option, with hop-on-hop-off sightseeing vehicles circling the entire lake. Riding along the lakeshore is romantic and leisurely, with many public bike rental spots available. For a boat tour, there are nearly 10 docks around the lake offering various vessels and routes. We highly recommend taking a cruise to Three Pools Mirroring the Moon at the lake center while enjoying the scenic views. Alternatively, you can hail a hand-rowed boat for a more flexible experience with a boatman guiding your tour. North line scenery The north shore of West Lake gathers quite a few attractions, usually starting from the remnant snow on broken bridge at the northeast corner and heading west all the way to Yuewang Temple. You can walk along Bai Causeway to Solitary Hill, visiting cultural attractions like Xiling Seal Engravers' Society, Zhejiang Provincial Museum, Chinese Seal Art Museum, and Zhongshan Park's Crane Pavilion. Enjoy authentic West Lake vinegar fish at Louwailou Restaurant, then cross Xiling Bridge to leave the island - Yuewang Temple and Breeze-ruffled lotus at Quyuan Garden are just a short distance away. If it's a summer day with strong sunlight, it is recommended to stroll along Beishan road, hiding under the dense shade of trees to admire the curve of Broken bridge and the swaying weeping willows on Bai causeway opposite. There are many entrances along the way leading to Precious stone hill, where you can hike for views, and descend to reach Yuewang temple. Yuewang square has many small shops for snacks, and the Impression West Lake show here in the evening is also worth watching. If you have ample time and energy, you can also head to Su causeway from here for a walk to enjoy the panoramic view of West Lake. Southeast coast (Lakeside-Nanshan Road) Another area with a concentration of attractions is the Hubin Road-Nanshan Road along the southeastern coast. Hubin Road is located at the junction between Hangzhou's urban area and the attraction, offering views of West Lake, a dock for West Lake cruises, and the iconic music fountain. The advantage of Hubin Road is its quick access from the attraction to the downtown business district, making it suitable for travelers with a tight itinerary to make a short stop. Head south from Hubin road and walk along Nanshan road, where you can visit attractions like Orioles singing in the willows, Long bridge, Leifeng pagoda, Evening bell at Nanping hill, and Viewing fish at flower harbor. The distance between adjacent attractions is not far, so you can walk or take a sightseeing bus or public transport, which are also convenient. You can arrange a day to visit a few of them according to your preference. Among them, Leifeng pagoda and Evening bell at Nanping hill can be visited in the evening. Listening to the bell at Jingci temple and overlooking the night view of West lake from Leifeng pagoda are both great experiences.China · Hangzhou

Wuma Street is a famous commercial street in Wenzhou. It is located in the southern part of the ancient city of Wenzhou. It starts from Jiefang South Road in the east and borders Cicada Street in the west. It has a total length of 424 meters and is full of various shops. When the great calligrapher Wang Xizhi was the county watchman in Yongjia (an ancient name of Wenzhou), he often drove a carriage with five horses in parallel, hence the name of Wuma Street. When Wuma Street was rebuilt, it retained the original Chinese and Western architectural style, as well as the Wuweihe non-staple food shopping mall, Jinsanyi silk cloth shop, and Laoxiangshan pharmacy. The sculptures on the whole street are very distinctive, and the design of the buildings is also very westernized.Wenzhou · 33.3 km from Yueqing

Dongtou Little Erhai Lakeis named for its scenery of azure waters, reefs, and long causeways, which resembles Erhai Lake in Yunnan. It is a popular seaside photo spot on social media, and couples often come here specifically for wedding photos. The core "Zhongyu Waiting for You" wedding photography base is located on Zhongyu Island, known for its unique rocks, beautiful reefs, and secluded caves. The main attractions are concentrated along the colorful coastal causeway: the breakwater is painted in bright colors, and people like to call it the "Rainbow Causeway"; the causeway is dotted with photo installations such as an ocean swing, vintage piano, vintage telephone, "80s Record Room", windmill, blue and white arched balcony, and white long table and benches, while the words "Vows of Eternal Love" are carved into the rocks. With the blue sky, white clouds, reefs, and the sea as a backdrop, you can take fresh, ocean-facing photos just by standing or sitting anywhere. The scenic area also includes a small beach where children can dig in the sand and play in the water, making it family-friendly. You can walk along the coast to enjoy the reef views around Zhongyu up close, and near the viewing platform, you can also experience a speedboat trip out to sea, offering a different perspective of the colorful causeway from the water.Wenzhou · 30.1 km from Yueqing

Lingyin Feilai Peak Scenic Area is located west of West Lake Scenic Area, including Lingyin Temple andFeilai peakTwo main views.Feilai peakNot large or tall, yet it gathers hundreds of statues of bodhisattvas and eminent monks from different dynasties, creating a beauty of fusion. The Lingyin Temple in the mountains is a famous ancient temple in Hangzhou, bustling with incense offerings. Lingyin Feilai Peak Scenic Area itself is not very large, and you can explore it on foot. After entering the main gate, turn left, and you'll see it in no time.Feilai peak, following the forest trail for less than 5 minutes, you'll see the entrance to Qinglin Cave. It's said that the stone slab in front of the cave was once the sleeping bed of Ji Gong, and lying on it is believed to free one from worldly troubles, attracting many travelers to take a rest here. Heading north, the Yuru Cave houses exquisite statues of the Eighteen Arhats from the Northern Song Dynasty, with additional finely crafted statues of the Six Patriarchs of Zen Buddhism on both sides of the cave's eastern entrance. The Longhong cave ahead is commonly known asGuanyin caveInside, there is a rock crevice known as "a thread of sky." Not everyone can see the light passing through the crevice, so you often see people craning their necks to look up. The cliff outside the cave is covered with stone carvings of Buddha statues. At the lower part, you can see the Song Dynasty carving of "the white horse carrying scriptures." The Ligong Pagoda at the entrance of Longhong Cave is the only remaining Ming Dynasty pagoda in Hangzhou. Following the Cold Spring Stream from here, you can also see the big-bellied Maitreya. Opposite the stone carvings stands the famous Lingyin Temple, which is open to the public free of charge but requires real-name reservation in advance, and is still well worth a visit. The statue of Skanda in the heavenly king hall is a relic from the Southern Song dynasty, carved from a single piece of camphor wood, making it extremely precious. The newly renovated Yongfu Temple in Hangzhou is located next to Lingyin Temple. Follow the signs uphill to reach it. Besides the serene ancient architecture, the temple grounds also feature a tea plantation and many ancient trees, offering quite a scenic view. Visitors must return the same way from Yongfu Temple. For those who wish to hike, there is a fork in the path halfway back to Lingyin Temple, leading to Taoguang Temple's exit and onward to Beigao Peak. This route is quiet with few people, making for a pleasant walk. Beigao Peak can be reached by hiking or taking a cable car. At the summit, the Temple of the First Wealth God under Heaven is one of Hangzhou's famous ancient temples.China · Hangzhou

Lingyin Temple

Lingyin Temple, also known as "Yunlin Temple," is located at the foot of Lingyin Mountain on the west side of West Lake. With its serene environment, it is the oldest renowned temple in Hangzhou, preserving numerous exquisite cultural relics from various dynasties. This is the place where Jigong became a monk, and it is said that prayers made here are very efficacious, attracting a continuous stream of worshippers every day. Seventeen hundred years of trials have made Lingyin Temple a treasure trove of history and culture: the plaque inscribed "Yunlin Chan Temple" hanging in the heavenly king hall was written by Emperor Kangxi of the Qing dynasty; the stone pagoda in front of the main hall and the stone sutra pillar in front of the heavenly king hall are relics from the Wuyue period of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms; the temple houses precious Buddhist artifacts such as ancient palm-leaf scriptures, a gilded statue from the Eastern Wei dynasty, a handwritten copy of the "Diamond Sutra" by Dong Qichang of the Ming dynasty, and the wooden dragon sutra from the Yongzheng era of the Qing dynasty. Lingyin Temple is also where the monk "Jigong" (Daoji) was ordained. In the Daoji Chan Master Hall of Lingyin Temple, a statue of Jigong is enshrined, holding a broken fan in his right hand, prayer beads in his left, and resting his right foot on a wine jar. Lingyin Temple is nestled against the Northern Peak and faces Feilai Peak. Though Feilai Peak is not tall, it features numerous fantastically shaped caves and over 340 Buddhist rock carvings dating back to the Five Dynasties period, making it a rare gem of ancient grotto art in southern China. The temple enjoys year-round bustling incense offerings, especially on the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month or major Buddhist festivals, when devotees flock from all directions, creating massive crowds.China · Hangzhou

Wutian Old Street

Wutian Old Street is a historical and cultural block built along the Wenrui Tanghe River, spanning the east and west sections of theTanghe River. This area was formerly known as "Wutian Market." During the Ming and Qing dynasties, it became a distribution center for agricultural and sideline products thanks to the water transport of theTanghe River. Shops were set up along the river, and merchant ships docked at the wharves for trade. The arcades, wharves, and alleys from the 1980s are memories for many older Wenzhou residents. Today, the old street has been renovated to recreate old Wenzhou street scenes, such as banyan pavilions, Dong'ou Academy, water streets and markets, and intangible cultural heritage crafts. The architecture of the block continues the traditional style of the arcade-style residences on both banks of the Wenrui Tanghe River, with green bricks, dark tiles, and a subdued color palette. The gables use old green bricks from the sites of former Wenzhou residences, and wooden components like doors and windows were hand-carved by woodcarving masters, featuring delicate patterns of flowers, birds, fish, and insects. The internal river system divides the block into multiple island areas surrounded by waterways, with small bridges, wharves, and alleys crisscrossing. The hundreds-of-meters-longTanghe Riverscenic belt along the river is perfect for a leisurely stroll. You can also see theKuixing Pavilionon the old street, with its overhanging eaves, which carries the wishes of ancient examinees praying for success in imperial examinations, and it is quite recognizable. The old street is relatively quiet during the day, making it suitable for examining architectural details. In the evening, when the lights come on, lanterns and their reflections on the river make the area more vibrant, which is also a great time for taking photos.Wenzhou · 34 km from Yueqing

Dongtou Wanghai Tower truly lives up to its title of "Number One Tower in Southeast China," its ancient building boasting exquisite and grand eaves. Climbing to the top floor offers panoramic views of hundreds of islands dotting the landscape, the azure sea stretching to the horizon, and the scenery of Banping Mountain and the fishing port. The mountain road was winding and rugged along the way, and the walls were all made of stone. It was indeed primitive and in line with the style of ancient villages. Although the doors were not locked at night (because more than 95% of the houses were empty and abandoned, no one lived in them, so there was no need to lock the doors), every house still had big red lanterns hanging high. I got up very early in the morning and went shopping alone. Although it was bright, it was still creepy to be alone. The homestay I stayed in was very unique. There was a lotus pond and a vegetable garden in front of the door. It was summer when I went there. There were cicadas, frogs, chickens, dogs, and people sketching and taking photos...

As the evening breeze caresses the Wenrui River, one can experience the romantic nighttime atmosphere of Wenzhou. The city lights gradually illuminate the scene, ancient bridges lean against the flowing water, and old buildings with white walls and gray tiles gaze at the distant city lights. Layers of shimmering light float on the river's surface as boats glide by, shattering the sparkling reflections.

🌞 I'm in Wenzhou! With no plans, I just casually wandered around and stumbled upon the famous Wuma Street. It's a bit like the bustling Nanjing Road in Shanghai, but a bit more gentle and slower. 🏛️ The buildings lining the street are Baroque-style buildings from the Republican era. The sunlight dappled the facades, creating a beautiful, mottled effect. While walking, I came across the magnificent bronze statue of "Five Galloping Horses." It was truly breathtaking!✨ There's also the First Department Store and century-old shops—it's like you can smell the scent of bygone times. 📍 Address: Wuma Street, Lucheng District, Wenzhou (between Jiefang Street and Fuqian Street) ⏰ Hours: Open all day, feel free to stroll around. 🪶 Fun Fact: Wuma Street got its name from the fact that when Wang Xizhi of the Eastern Jin Dynasty traveled, the street was wide enough to accommodate five horses galloping side by side. Isn't that quite poetic? ⸻ 🐎 1️⃣ Five Galloping Horses Bronze Statue The bronze horses looked particularly imposing in the sunlight, and many people stopped to take photos. On a clear day, the light and shadows on the horses made them look like they were galloping, so dynamic! 🏮 2️⃣ Chan Street Archway The archway of the New Guoguang Building is easily recognizable from afar. Further in, you can see the Jingguang Pagoda on Songtai Mountain. I happened to be there during sunset, and the warm light was incredibly beautiful. 📸 🏛️ 3️⃣ Baroque Buildings Every corner offers a great photo opportunity. The Republican-era-style exterior walls glow golden in the sunlight during the day and warm in the light at night. Wherever you walk by, you'll feel like you've traveled back in time. 🎭 4️⃣ Ancient Theater The bluestone pavement, carved stone figures, and the archway across the street are all incredibly exquisite. The ancient stage and modern architecture juxtaposed side by side create a wonderful contrast, a truly Wenzhou-inspired experience. ⸻ 🚶‍♀ I didn't take the train~ I preferred to walk slowly, take photos, and enjoy snacks. No rush, no set route. Just let my feet take me wherever I want to go.💭

Lingyin Temple is a must-visit when in Hangzhou, and it's easily worth spending a full day here. Our tour guide was very experienced and provided clear, insightful explanations throughout the tour. However, keep in mind that the flowers and candles offered for purchase through the guide were on the pricier side.A few critical planning tips if you are visiting soon:1) Temporary Closures: The cable car is closed from July 19 to September 20, and the First Wealth Temple (第一财神殿) is closed from May 25 to November 25.2) Entry Policy: Entry passes are strictly single-use—you cannot re-enter once you leave.3) Timing & Traffic: Plan to arrive before 8:00 AM and leave before 5:00 PM to avoid heavy traffic jams.4) reservation: While there is no separate entrance fee beyond the ticket, you must reserve a slot via WeChat in advance (or secure your reservation directly by purchasing this ticket).Overall, a wonderful experience—make sure to plan your timeline and expectations ahead of time!
