Ancient City of Kashi

The Ancient City of Kashi is located in the center of Kashgar City. Known in ancient times as Shule, it was an important trading port on the ancient Silk Road, boasts a history of over 2,000 years, and is one of the best-preserved labyrinthine districts in the ancient Western Regions style in China. The movie "The Kite Runner" was filmed here, and the earthy yellow rooftops where children ran chasing kites in the film are just ordinary street scenes of the ancient city. Unlike most attractions, the ancient city is still inhabited by residents today, with Atlas silk drying in the sun and seniors playing chess at the alley entrances, creating a vibrant atmosphere of daily life everywhere. The essence of the ancient town lies in its streets and alleys. Centered around the square in front of the Id Kah Mosque, over twenty crisscrossing lanes feature earth-yellow walls, carved wooden doors, arched windows, and overhead bridges, sketching a classic Central Asian streetscape. Along the approx. 600 m-long Arheyah Road, bazaars like the Flowerpot Bazaar, Kettmen Bazaar (Blacksmith Street), Doppa Bazaar, and Uyghur Medicine Bazaar unfold one after another—"bazaar" means market in Uyghur. Bread bakers, potters, and woodturners often craft their wares right at their shopfronts, allowing visitors to watch the process while strolling. The adjacent Kumdarwaza Road, also called Artisan Street, gathers traditional workshops for musical instruments, copperware, and more. When tired, stop by the century-old teahouse on Ostangboyi Road for a pot of tea, paired with street views and the Maixirap folk dances of regular patrons. The morning gate-opening ceremony at the east gate is the first stop for many travelers. After watching the welcome dance performance, stroll slowly inward along the main street. Rainbow Lane, Cloth Bag Lane, and the Hanging Gardens are popular photo spots, but expect narrow alleys and crowds requiring patient queuing. In fact, turning into lesser-known side lanes often leads to quieter corners perfect for photos. Kashgar operates on a roughly two-hour time difference from inland China, with late sunsets. The slanting evening light on adobe walls creates ideal photo conditions, and it's never too late to visit Han Bazaar Food Street at night for baked buns, stewed meat in jars, and hand-churned ice cream. If time permits, the ancient dwellings on the high cliff east of the old town are worth a visit, featuring clusters of traditional earthen houses built along the cliff; across the Tuman River, the grand bazaar is packed with stalls selling dried fruits and atlas silk, offering a glimpse into the enduring bazaar tradition.Kashgar City · 72.7 km from Yopurga County

Id Kah MosqueLocated in the heart of Kashgar's Old Town, this is one of the largest mosques. The complex features many magnificent Islamic-style buildings that visitors can explore. Witnessing the five daily prayer sessions outside the mosque offers a chance to observe grand worship scenes and experience profound religious devotion. Designed as a courtyard-style complex, the mosque's eastern main entrance is flanked by massive...Kashgar Id Kah SquareIt is a landmark of Kashgar. The large square is usually filled with people relaxing and playing games, where bearded elders and children sit together basking in the sun, creating a peaceful and leisurely atmosphere. On the western side of the square stands the eastern gate of the mosque, which serves as its main entrance. The gate features a soft yellow facade flanked by two minarets with graceful curved designs, and a large plaque inscribed with Arabic calligraphy of the Islamic creed hangs above the entrance. Many visitors take photos here. After purchasing tickets at the eastern gate, you can enter the mosque's expansive courtyard, which stretches over 100 meters in both length and width. The area is shaded by numerous trees, offering a rare oasis of greenery and comfort in the arid climate of Kashgar. Within the courtyard, you'll find over a dozen structures, including prayer halls, lecture halls, and domed shrines, all adorned in green and showcasing distinct Islamic architectural styles. A central pool and gardens add to the serene ambiance. The main attraction is the prayer hall, located deep within the complex. Stretching over 100 meters, the hall is dominated by green hues and supported by more than a hundred towering green columns, each seven meters high. Rows of prayer mats mark the worship area. Inside, the hall is devoid of any human imagery, adhering to Islamic traditions. After exploring the courtyard and its structures, visitors can exit through the eastern gate. Beyond admiring the architecture, witnessing the grand prayer ceremonies is a highlight of visiting the mosque. Five daily prayers are held, during which the mosque is closed to visitors, but the rituals can be observed from outside. Before each prayer, the mosque's broadcast system fills the air with the hauntingly beautiful call to prayer. Soon after, two to three thousand worshippers gather—so many that some spill onto the square and surrounding areas when the mosque reaches capacity. The scene is both solemn and awe-inspiring. On Fridays, the Islamic day of congregational prayer (Jumu'ah), the number of worshippers swells to six or seven thousand, sometimes even exceeding ten thousand, creating an unforgettable spectacle. Additionally, during major Islamic festivals like Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr, tens of thousands gather here to celebrate with music and dance. If your visit coincides with these events, don't miss the chance to witness the vibrant festivities.Kashgar City · 73 km from Yopurga County

Panlong Ancient Road is a mountain road on the Pamir Plateau that has become popular in recent years, also known as the Wacha Highway, spanning a total length of approx. 36 km. It was originally built to facilitate travel for local farmers and herdsmen on the plateau: the mountain is made of loose sandy rock, making it impossible to build tunnels or bridges, so the road had to wind up along the mountain ridges following the terrain, climbing from an altitude of approx. 3,000 m to over 4,000 m. With over 600 S-bends layered on top of each other, it looks like a black dragon coiled among the mountains when viewed from the air, and is known by locals as the "Sky Road of the Plateau." The entire road is divided into two sections: Big Panlong and Small Panlong. The first section, Big Panlong, features large, sparse bends, with parking areas and viewing platforms along the way, perfect for stopping to overlook the entire mountain road. The subsequent Small Panlong section has dense bends, with a series of nearly 180-degree hairpin turns arranged neatly, offering a thrilling visual and driving experience.China · Tashkurgan

Kashi Museum is a key to quickly understanding the history of Kashi. Its collection revolves around the oasis civilization of the Silk Road, connecting the long civilizational trajectory of this land, from prehistoric stone tools to Tang Dynasty Buddhist temple remains, and then to clothing and textiles from the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. The permanent exhibition centers on "Kunlun Basin, Treasures of the Ancient Road — Kashi Historical Artifacts Exhibition," which lays out important artifacts from various periods of Kashi in chronological order. In addition, there are thematic exhibitions on the history, ethnicity, and religion of Xinjiang, as well as achievement and planning exhibitions showcasing Kashi's development and changes. There are many artifacts in the collection worth a close look: the belly of the Northern and Southern Dynasties three-eared embossed pottery jar is imprinted with a circle of Hu figures, blending elements of Zoroastrianism, Buddhism, and Central Plains culture, and is often regarded as a treasure of the museum; the Northern Song silk-tapestry-trimmed silk and cotton robe combines Central Plains brocade craftsmanship with Western Regions clothing styles; the Tang Dynasty plaster relief wall brick depicting the Buddha preaching and the Tathagata clay Buddha head come from the Tuokuzisalai Ruins in Bachu County, presenting the prosperity of Silk Road Buddhist art; thanks to the local dry climate, ancient textiles such as Song Dynasty leather boots, Song Dynasty cotton handkerchiefs, and Ming Dynasty red felt hats are well-preserved, and such textile remains are rare elsewhere; early remains such as the Neolithic stone millstone, Western Zhou straight-handled stone spoon, and Spring and Autumn period bronze cauldron trace the history of human activity in Kashi even further back.Kashgar City · 73.3 km from Yopurga County

Bandir Blue Lake is not a natural lake, but a highland reservoir formed by the Xiabandi Water Control Project. The lake water comes from glacial meltwater and has a high mineral content, appearing in shades of clear light blue, peacock blue, and even deep, mysterious blue under the sunlight. The lake area is surrounded by grayish-white cliffs and snow-capped mountains, with the stark rock walls setting off a pool of blue water, exuding the tranquility of a hidden highland realm. Influenced by factors such as light, weather, water level, and the surrounding mountain environment, the lake surface presents different shades of blue and blue-green, which are particularly striking in clear weather. There are viewing platforms along the lakeside road, and open areas along the roadside are also suitable for parking and taking photos at your leisure.China · Tashkurgan

Gaotai Residence is located at the northeastern end of the old city of Kashgar. It is a Uyghur ethnic settlement built on a loess cliff with a height of more than 40 meters and a length of more than 800 meters. It has a history of 600 years. A great landscape. The area is built on a cliff and has nearly 600 households. The houses are built of mud and poplar, and look loose, but they are solid, and many are hundreds of years old. Across the river from the modern Kashgar New Town, the old town is significantly higher. Gaoya existed two thousand years ago, and Uyghur ancestors built houses here more than one thousand years ago. According to legend, Ban Chao and Geng Gong, the famous generals of the Eastern Han Dynasty, left their footprints here. In the middle of the ninth century AD, when the Kashgar Khan Dynasty, the palace was built on the north side of this high cliff. The Uyghurs in Gaotai dwellings live together from generation to generation. The houses are built on cliffs, and the family population increases by one generation, so they add a floor to the houses of their ancestors. In this way, from generation to generation, houses are connected to houses, buildings are connected to buildings, and these houses are stacked one after another. Most of them are earth houses, but there are also many newly built brick houses. There are more than 50 alleys extending in all directions, criss-crossing, criss-crossing, up and down, and up and down. There are many old houses and mosques that have been around for hundreds of years. Gaotai dwellings are praised by Chinese and foreign tourists as the "Uyghur Living Folk Museum", which is the connotation of Kashgar, a famous historical and cultural city in China. Gaotai dwellings are not only an excellent place for Uyghur traditional handicraft production, but also a palace of Uyghur landscaping, sculpture and painting art.Kashgar City · 71.6 km from Yopurga County

The Ancient City of Kashi is probably the main attraction in the city of Kashgar, one of the most illustrious destinations along the Silk Route. By way of preservation of traditional art forms, cuisines and crafts, fashion and architecture, the ancient city offers a look into the past of this part of the region. Many travelers would consider this spot a must-visit, as an important historical site where there are a number of world intangible cultural heritage projects involving many crafts from the city's history, such as Uyghur pottery and clay-molding, and medicinal food therapy. More than just a scenic area, this ancient city is a combination of older and newer elements, and has many interesting experiences in store for visitors.

There was a staff member inside who offered free explanations every now and then. For those unfamiliar with the area, the explanations of the rugs on the walls were what truly conveyed the maker's heartfelt intentions and blessings. However, there were too many people attending prayer, and in the end, it was too hot to explore much.

Arriving at the Pamir Plateau, one truly witnesses the magnificent grandeur of western China's landscape. Starting from Kashgar and traveling along the Karakoram Highway, snow-capped mountains, lakes, and deserts unfold before your eyes in breathtaking scenery—a must-do route in southern Xinjiang. Along the way, you'll stop at White Sand Lake and Karakol Lake, facing Muztagh Ata Peak directly. The pristine snow-capped mountains reflected in the azure lakes create stunning photographs. The winding Panlong Ancient Road offers a unique and immersive experience. Along the way, you can also experience the unique culture and customs of the Tajik people—their simple and honest nature, the vast and tranquil plateau, far removed from the hustle and bustle of the city, a truly healing experience. This is a border region, so a border permit must be obtained in advance; without it, you will not be able to pass. The overall altitude is very high, mostly above 3000 meters, making altitude sickness a common concern. Slow down your movements and bring oxygen cylinders and glucose. The temperature difference between day and night is significant; even in summer, a thick coat and windproof jacket are essential. The ultraviolet radiation is extremely strong, so sun protection and sunglasses are a must. The scenic areas are far apart and scattered, so driving or hiring a car is more suitable. Cell phone signal is weak in some sections, so downloading offline maps is recommended. The weather on the plateau is unpredictable; one moment it's sunny and clear, and the next it can be windy and snowy. There aren't many commercial facilities, so conditions are relatively basic; those seeking comfort and relaxation should expect that. Seeing the Pamir Plateau in person makes all the travel fatigue worthwhile. For those who love natural scenery, the Pamir Plateau is definitely worth a visit.

The overall environment of the scenic area is so-so, and it operates under a commercial model... Since the scenic area is quite large, older people are advised to take the sightseeing bus. Younger people with enough time can rent bicycles, but only a small portion of the space is worth seeing!

Panlong Ancient Road, located in Wacha Township, Tashkurgan County, Kashgar Prefecture, is a renowned scenic highway on the Pamir Plateau. The 36-kilometer-long road winds its way through the Kunlun Mountains, featuring over 600 S-shaped and U-shaped bends, resembling a giant dragon lying across the landscape, hence its name. The road's altitude rises from 3000 meters to 4216 meters, a drop of over 1200 meters. Built along the contours of the mountains, the road is tightly wound and intricate, offering breathtaking views at every turn. Looking around, vast valleys, rolling hills, and distant snow-capped peaks create a magnificent panorama of the plateau. Originally a rural path, the road was paved with asphalt in 2019, greatly facilitating travel for local villagers. The slogan at the exit, "Having traversed all the winding roads today, from now on, life will be smooth sailing," imbues the road with a beautiful meaning, making it a unique and memorable destination for countless self-driving travelers.

Free to visit and free parking. Although the collection is small, there are many fine works. The most amazing one is the silk brocade robe with embroidered silk edges from the Northern Song Dynasty, which is exquisitely made and well preserved. The Kunlun Pavilion next to it introduces the nature and culture of the Kunlun Mountains in detail, which is worth a visit.

After leaving Panlong Ancient Road, we headed back to Kashgar in the afternoon. We visited several scenic spots along the Wuhong Line and National Highway 314, including: Bandir Blue Lake, known as the "blue eyes" of the Pamir Plateau, Taheman Wetland (Figures 6 and 7), and the Red Mountain Canyon of Aoyitak Glacier Park.

The China-Pakistan Friendship Highway from Kashgar to Tashkurgan County and then to Khunjerab is very easy to drive and the scenery is so beautiful. Watch my video, there are two sections on the China-Pakistan Friendship Highway. If you don't have high sickness when driving, just go up all the way. I went there in March, when the winter snow just started to melt, it was as if people and cars were driving in an oil painting... Come and experience it!

The Kashgar Gaotai Dwellings, preserved as a heritage park, boast over 600 houses built of mud and poplar wood. They stretch across a gently sloping landscape, with lanes ranging from 6 meters wide to just 1.5 meters narrow. While the houses appear shabby, the sunlight filtering through their walls creates a unique charm.
