Fengcheng River Scenic Area

4.5/5
616 reviews

Fengcheng River Scenic Area is a moat that surrounds the ancient city of Taizhou in a rectangular shape. The main attractions are concentrated in the southeast corner, primarily featuring the Wanghai Tower area on the northern bank and the Taoyuan (Peach Garden) scenic area on the southern bank. Both sides of the river are lined with green willows and dotted with cultural structures, making it a pleasant experience to stroll along the riverbank or take a cruise. At night, the illuminated scenery adds to the charm. The Wanghai Tower area on the northern bank centers around Fengcheng River's Wanghai Tower, originally built during the Song Dynasty and reconstructed in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Visitors can climb the tower for panoramic views. To the west lies Wenhui Hall, featuring statues of Fan Zhongyan and Teng Zijing. Further north, you'll find the Zhoucheng Ruins, an ancient city plaza with engraved ground reliefs, and a stele garden displaying inscribed poems praising Taizhou. On the southern bank, the waterside pavilion pier in Fengcheng River's Taoyuan is an ideal spot for sightseeing. The core attraction here is Chen'an, a Ming-Qing style complex with three courtyards furnished with antique furniture. Inside, exhibits detail Kong Shangren's *The Peach Blossom Fan*, Zhong Zhenkui, and Taizhou's opera history. West of Chen'an is a stone boat, while to the north stand attractions like Qingfeng Pavilion and Laifeng Tower. The southern Peach Blossom Island is covered in peach trees, creating a stunning sight in spring. North of Taoyuan lies Mei Lanfang Park, where the Mei Lanfang Memorial Hall showcases the life and art of the Peking Opera master through artifacts and documents. West of Taoyuan is the Traditional Chinese Architecture Culture Museum, displaying cultural relics such as Luban rulers and compasses. The scenic area offers cruises, including pedal boats and electric boats, with fees ranging from CNY 30–40 depending on the vessel. For a more picturesque experience, opt for a night cruise—departing from Taoyuan Pier, the route passes Yingchun Bridge, Mei Garden, Liufang Teahouse, and Guandi Temple before returning. Other attractions include Fengcheng River's Imperial Examination Hall and Qiao Garden. Adjacent to Taoyuan's eastern side is Taizhou Old Street, built in Ming-Qing style. Here, visitors can shop for souvenirs and savor local delicacies like grass-oven baked cakes, Taizhou dried tofu shreds, and Qinhu Lake's "Eight Delicacies." If you prefer a leisurely stroll, you don't need to purchase an admission ticket—many riverside greenbelts are open for walking, and at night, you can admire the illuminated cruises gliding along the water.

Huangqiao Town was built during the Yuanfeng reign of Shenzong in the Northern Song Dynasty. It is a thousand-year-old town with a long history and a famous cultural town with rich heritage. It is adjacent to the Yangtze River in the south, Rugao in the east, and Jiangyan in the north. Huangqiao has historically been known as a water hub that "divides Huaiwa in the north and connects with Jiangchao in the south". Provincial Highway 334, such as the Yellow Line and Jiangba Line, cross the town area, and two expressways, Ningjingyan and Ningtong, pass through the town. Across the border from Huangqiao, the New (Yi) Chang (Xing) Railway has a passenger and cargo marshalling station in Huangqiao. The Yellow Bridge has a long history and is rich in humanities. There are more than 2,000 well-preserved Ming and Qing buildings in the Yellow Bridge, and a small number of Song Dynasty buildings. There are three traditional ancient blocks in the east, south and west, with a total area of nearly 30 hectares. Huangqiao is also the site of the Battle of Huangqiao under the command of the older generation of proletarian revolutionaries, and many historical sites of the revolution are still preserved. During the period of resisting Japan and saving the nation, a decisive battle of Huangqiao that shocked China and foreign countries became a new glory added to the history of Huangqiao, and a song of Huangqiao sesame cakes has been sung in the north and south of the river since then.

Taizhou Old Street is located in the southeast corner of the ancient city of Taizhou. It is a Ming and Qing style pedestrian street by the Fengcheng River. There are many shops on both sides of the street about 600 meters long. Most of them are snack bars, restaurants and local specialty shops that are closely related to the lives of local people.  There is no commercial atmosphere of tourist attractions here. On the contrary, many shops are old shops that have been in business for many years. At the corner of the old street is a small square in the middle of the street. There is an ancient opera building on the square, and there are some teahouses around to take a break. A small stream flows by the side of the square, with a waterwheel in the stream, which is quaint. When tourists come to the old street, they must not miss the local delicacies such as grass oven biscuits, Taizhou dried silk, and Qinhu Baxian, which are popular among Taizhou people. . Here, you can not only eat a lot, but also enjoy the scenery of Fengcheng River. The taste is amazing. Every night, the old street is even more charming under the background of landscape lights. Walk about 200 meters from the entrance of the old street to the entrance of Fengcheng Taoyuan Scenic Spot. This is a local theme park built to commemorate Kong Shangren's writing of "Peach Blossom Fan" in Taizhou; Meilanfang Park not far away has various materials, The real object shows the artistic life of Peking Opera master Mei Lanfang. If you have enough time, it is recommended to play together.

I saw a CCTV recommendation many years ago. Although there's a water forest in Qingpu, Shanghai, this place offers a more immersive experience with a boat tour. In early November, the cedar trees hadn't turned red yet, but it still had its own seasonal beauty.

I took advantage of the weekend break and drove with friends to Zhenhu Lake in Taizhou to relax. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city and breathing in the fresh air, I felt much more relaxed. I even saw some Père David's deer up close. I think this trip was really great!

The rapeseed flowers are especially spectacular when they bloom, and there are many photo spots set up. However, the ladies on the tour boats seem to be trying to earn tips, which is a bit shady. I hope the scenic area will strengthen its management.

As a descendant of a veteran naval officer, I feel extremely honored to be able to visit and see my country's first-generation replenishment ship and destroyer. I also forwarded the photos to the veteran, who expressed great satisfaction.

The ancient town is very old, with ancient camellia and banyan trees. My child, just over 1.4 meters tall and wearing sneakers, was charged at some attractions, but was allowed to pass through Zhenhu Lake without paying. Another unique feature of Taizhou is its paid parking; street parking is also quite expensive, especially during holidays.

Meiyuan Garden, located on the banks of the Fengcheng River on the east side of Taizhou's old city, is a garden commemorating Mei Lanfang. It attracts many tourists during holidays and is one of Taizhou's most visited attractions. Transportation is convenient, with multiple bus lines nearby. The Taizhou Old Street commercial area is directly opposite, offering plenty of food and drinks. There is a parking lot at the entrance, but spaces are limited and are usually full of tour buses during holidays.

Huangqiao Ancient Town is a famous cultural town with a thousand-year history. The ancient streets and alleys and stone bridges here are like an antique painting. You can stroll on the bluestone road in the ancient town to feel the simplicity and tranquility; you can also visit the ancient buildings and houses with a long history to learn about the legendary stories and historical culture of the ancient town.

The night view of Fengcheng River is really great. There are opera performances on the shore from time to time, which inherit the artistic culture of Master Mei Lanfang. It is also very pleasant to walk around Taoyuan next to the old street at night.

You must visit Taizhou Old Street. Although it is just a commercial street now, you can see antique buildings everywhere. It is very artistic. The Morning Tea Museum is small but exquisite. It introduces Taizhou's traditional morning tea and bathroom culture. I learned a lot. Taoyuan is also free now. There are many entrances and exits connected to the old street. The ancient salt canal wharf is also very close to the back door of the old street. You can check in together and have fun.

The garden is quite nice, a typical traditional residence with a courtyard and back garden, indicating that Zheng Banqiao came from a relatively well-off background. Located in a prime area of the city, it boasts convenient transportation and is ideal for tourism. The surrounding old town and many smaller attractions can be visited together; a combined ticket is available at an affordable price.
