Budir Church

Budir Church

6.1
4.0/5
1 reviews
Budir Churchis a small, all-black wooden church located in Búðir on the south coast of the Snæfellsnes peninsula, and it is one of the few black churches in Iceland. Its black exterior is due to the traditional method of coating the wood with tar to protect it against sea winds and the damp climate, which has, in turn, given it a highly recognizable appearance. The church stands on the Búðahraun lava field, surrounded by black lava covered in moss, and on clear days, you can see the white ice cap of the Snæfellsjökull glacier in the distance. The stark contrast between the green moss in summer or white snow in winter and the black church, combined with the serene cemetery enclosed by low stone walls, makes it a popular spot for photography enthusiasts on the Snæfellsnes peninsula.Snaefellsbaer · 22.8 km from downtown
Djúpalónssandur beach

Djúpalónssandur beach

4.3
Djúpalónssandur beach is renowned for its natural beauty and historical relics. The beach is scattered with the wreckage of old fishing boats, and visitors can stroll along the trails to enjoy the tranquility of nature. Located at the western end of Snæfellsnes, the black pebble coast and basalt columns create a surreal, lunar-like landscape. Rusted iron anchors and gears left behind by a British trawler that ran aground in 1948 are scattered along the shore, serving as silent witnesses to maritime history. At low tide, four Viking-era lifting stones are visible, which ancient fishermen once used to test their strength. Behind the beach, the lava landscape is rugged and undulating, with Arctic terns and auks nesting on the jagged cliffs. From the viewing platform, you can take in the magnificent view of waves crashing against the Lóndrangar sea stacks. The strong contrast between the silvery-gray waves and the black beach makes this an excellent spot for photographers seeking minimalist compositions.Snaefellsbaer · 10.8 km from downtown

Kirkjufell

Kirkjufell(meaning "Church Mountain" in Icelandic) stands on the north coast of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in Iceland, next to the town of Grundarfjörður. The entire mountain sits on a small peninsula surrounded by the sea on three sides, with its broad base extending directly into the water. The mountain's shape resembles a pointed straw hat resting by the sea, which is why it is often nicknamed "Hat Mountain" by tourists. The mountain walls are formed by layers of tilted rock stacked upwards, and the peak, at an altitude of over 400 m, has a distinct outline, making it one of the most recognizable landmarks in Iceland. A stream winds around one side of the foot of the mountain, and the adjacent Kirkjufellsfoss is a classic foreground for photography. The composition of the waterfall, the solitary peak, and the sea creates a powerful visual, and photography enthusiasts often wait here for the perfect light. In summer, there is the midnight sun, while in winter, it is a popular spot for photographing the northern lights, with green bands of light looking especially stunning against the silhouette of the mountain. It is also the filming location for the "Arrowhead Mountain" beyond the Wall in seasons 6 and 7 of the TV series Game of Thrones, and fans of the show might want to compare the scenes from the show to find the familiar outline. For most tourists, taking photos along the short trail next to the waterfall is enough to capture the classic composition. If you want to reach the summit, the ridge route is steep and slippery, suitable only for experienced climbers attempting it in summer with a guide. For the average tourist, viewing it from a distance is more than enough.Grundarfjardarbaer · 28.2 km from Snaefellsbaer
Saxhóll Crater

Saxhóll Crater

3.2
Saxhóll Crater is located within the national park on the Snæfellsnes peninsula in Iceland and is one of the most accessible craters on the peninsula. This cinder cone crater, formed by a single eruption approximately 3,000 to 4,000 years ago, stands about 100 m high. A staircase trail made entirely of iron has been built along the slope leading directly to the top, and most visitors can reach the summit in just 5 to 20 minutes, making it suitable for all ages. Standing at the summit, you can take in panoramic views of the vast Atlantic Ocean, the sprawling lava fields, and the majestic Snæfellsjökull glacier in the distance. Saxhóll is actually composed of two connected craters, where the massive volcanic bowl-shaped landscape is clearly visible, making it an easy introductory route for experiencing the volcanic wonders of the Snæfellsnes peninsula.Snaefellsbaer · 3 km from downtown

Seljalandsfoss

93 reviews
Seljalandsfoss has a drop of approx. 60m, with water sourced from glacial meltwater. The waterfall's unique feature is a natural recessed path at the base of the cliff, where visitors can walk behind the water curtain to experience the roar of the cascading water and the surrounding mist up close. Looking out from behind the curtain, the view of the distant fields and horizon through the splashing water offers a unique and picturesque perspective, making it a favorite spot for photography enthusiasts. Sunset is an ideal time to capture the view from behind the curtain, as the warm light of the setting sun shines through the water from the west, creating exceptionally rich layers of light and shadow. When walking along the path, be mindful of the slippery rocks underfoot. The dense mist can also wet your clothing and electronic devices, so it is necessary to prepare waterproof gear in advance.Iceland · Rangarthing eystra

Hallgrimskirkja sits on a hill in the capital of Iceland and is named after the 17th-century Icelandic poet and clergyman Hallgrímur Pétursson. The church was designed by Icelandic architect Guðjón Samúelsson, with a design inspired by the natural forms of Iceland's basalt columns, featuring hexagonal pillars reaching upward. The tapering wings on both sides of the tower resemble a giant pipe organ standing on the city skyline when viewed from a distance. Construction began in 1945 and was completed in 1986, spanning over 40 years. The tower is approx. 73m high and is a prominent landmark on the Reykjavik skyline. Visitors can take an elevator to the observation deck at the top of the tower to overlook the city's colorful rooftops and the bay and mountains in the distance. The interior of the church is towering and minimalist, with a large pipe organ featuring over 5,000 pipes spanning above the entrance. It is one of the largest pipe organs in Iceland, making the church an important music venue in Reykjavik that regularly hosts organ concerts.Iceland · Reykjavik

Golden Circle

Golden Circleis a classic, iconic tourist route in Iceland that connects three natural and historical landmarks northeast of Reykjavik into a small loop that most travelers can complete in one day. Thingvellir National Park is situated on the rift valley at the boundary of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, serving as both the site of Iceland's ancient parliament and a place where you can walk along trails between the fissures to intuitively experience the geological wonder of the two plates slowly drifting apart; in the Haukadalur geothermal valley, Geysir is the source of the English word "geyser," while its neighbor, Strokkur, is more active today, sending scalding columns of water into the air every few minutes; and Gullfoss waterfall concludes the itinerary with its majestic two-tiered cascade and canyon scenery. Each of the three stops offers something unique, allowing you to take in geology, geothermal activity, and water features all in one day, making it the perfect introductory route for experiencing the essence of Iceland's nature and history.Iceland · Blaskogabyggd

Geysir

Geysiris located in the Haukadalur geothermal valley in southwestern Iceland and is an important stop on the Golden Circle route. The English word "geyser" originates from the Great Geysir here. Historically, the Great Geysir has erupted with boiling water columns reaching tens of meters high, but nowadays it is mostly quiet and dormant, rarely erupting. The real star is Strokkur, located just a short distance to the south, which erupts every few to 10 minutes. The azure water first churns in the center of the vent, forming a blue bubble, and in the next second, it bursts open with a roar, sending a water column shooting into the air. It usually reaches over 10 m high, and sometimes erupts 2 or 3 times in succession. The entire eruption lasts only a few seconds, so when you see the water surface bubble up, hold your breath and raise your camera. If you stand here patiently for a while, you will almost certainly be able to catch several of Strokkur's performances in a row.Iceland · Blaskogabyggd

As one of the must-see attractions in Iceland, the Golden Falls have a reason to do their part. The river flows straight down from a height of 32 meters and is divided into two levels. From a distance, it looks like two rainbows rushing along the Great Rift Valley. The scene is very spectacular. After a heavy rain, you can also see a large rainbow across the waterfall. A monument was erected next to the waterfall in memory of a civilian woman.Iceland · Hrunamannahreppur

Thingvellir National Park National Park is located approximately 45 km east of Reykjavik and is a key landmark of both historical and geological significance in Iceland. In 930 AD, Iceland's first national parliament was established here. It is one of the longest-running parliamentary institutions known in the world, and today it remains a venue for important national celebrations for Icelanders. The park is situated at the junction of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. The great rift clearly displays the boundary between the two continental plates, allowing visitors to intuitively experience the landscape formed by crustal rifting. In 2004, Thingvellir National Park was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list for its dual historical and geological value. Additionally, it is also widely known among fans as a filming location for the American TV series "Game of Thrones".Iceland · Blaskogabyggd

Considering the symbolism of black in Christianity, you'll understand what this church is for. However, the illuminated cross in the adjacent garden is quite unique.

冰岛西部的教会山 (Kirkjufell) 是一座海边的小山峰,之所以教会山出名是因为几幅很漂亮照片吸引了很多人来这里拍照,不过白天看上去也不耀眼。

Hallgrímskirkja Cathedral in Iceland is a very monumental church. From the outside, it looks very simple and elegant. According to the locals, this church was built for about half a century.

The Golden Circle is a general term for the main attractions such as the Golden Falls. It is also a must-see attraction in Iceland. At least our group basically visited all the attractions in the Golden Circle. It is very beautiful and worth visiting.

Iceland has the most waterfalls and natural hot springs in the world. It seems that you can see waterfalls of different sizes and shapes anytime and anywhere. The Golden Falls is very spectacular, flowing down and forming a river below. The tour guide said that the river water is drinkable. I took a few sips out of curiosity and it was sweet. [Scenery] Very beautiful. [Interest] Very interesting. [Cost-effective] High.

Thingvellir National Park is a spectacular destination where Iceland’s dramatic nature and fascinating history come together. The park features rugged landscapes, clear waters, lava fields, and impressive geological formations created by the movement of tectonic plates. I loved walking through the peaceful surroundings and enjoying the breathtaking views of mountains and valleys. The atmosphere feels incredibly fresh and open, making it a wonderful place to slow down and appreciate Iceland’s natural beauty. Thingvellir is also historically significant, adding another layer of interest to the visit. With its unique geology, scenic trails, and peaceful atmosphere, this national park is an unforgettable experience and definitely deserves a place on any Iceland itinerary.
