Dune 45 Sossusvlei

Dune 45 Sossusvlei

7.3
5.0/5

Dune 45 Sossusvlei is named for its location at the 45 km mark on the road from Sesriem Gate to Sossusvlei. It is a star-shaped dune, and its sand is rich in iron, which oxidizes to give it a deep red hue. As the angle of sunlight changes, the color of the dune shifts throughout the day, appearing most vivid at sunrise and sunset: the side facing the sun is bright red, while the side in shadow is dark, creating a sharp contrast of light and shadow along the narrow ridge. Because it is adjacent to the road, this is one of the dunes in the Sossusvlei area that visitors are allowed to climb. As you hike up the ridge, the visual contrast of red on one side and black on the other remains constant, and upon reaching the summit, you can overlook the surrounding sea of rolling red sand and dried-up salt pans. The sand that makes up the dune comes from deposits transported by the Orange River from the Kalahari approx. 5 million years ago, which accumulated through long-term weathering. The sharp contrast created by low-angle light between the two sides of the dune forms the unique landscape view of Dune 45 Sossusvlei.Sesriem · 42.7 km from downtown

Deadvlei

Deadvlei is located within Namib-Naukluft National Park, adjacent to the Sossusvlei salt pan, and is a white clay pan. Hundreds of years ago, the nearby Tsauchab River flooded, creating shallow pools in the pan, and the abundant water allowed camel thorn trees to flourish. Later, the climate shifted, sand dunes encroached and blocked the river, and the trees died once the water source was cut off. Due to the extremely arid climate, these dead trees have not decayed even after hundreds of years; their jet-black trunks stand on the white, cracked clay pan, creating a striking visual contrast with the surrounding rust-red sand dunes. The pan is surrounded by towering red sand dunes, among which is Big Daddy Dune, which stands over 300 m high and is one of the iconic sand dunes in the Sossusvlei area. The dead black trunks, pristine white pan, crimson sand dunes, and deep blue sky come together in a single scene, creating the unique landscape view here.Windhoek · 59.7 km from Sesriem

Namib Desert

The Namib Desert is one of the world's oldest deserts, with an arid climate that has persisted for tens of millions of years. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that the desert reaches all the way to the Atlantic coastline—the Benguela Current sweeps across the ocean surface, cooling the coastal air and condensing it into dense fog. This sea fog spreads inland year-round, becoming an important water source for this desert and creating a rare fog desert ecosystem. The sand dunes appear in varying shades of ochre red due to their rich iron mineral content, displaying rich layers of color under the sunlight. Sossusvlei, in the heart of the desert, is an area with a high concentration of scenic views, surrounded by towering red sand dunes. Among them, "Dune 45 Sossusvlei" is named for being approx. 45 km from the park entrance. Deadvlei is another iconic scenic view. Hundreds of years ago, the river channel was blocked by shifting sand dunes. After the water source was cut off, the camel thorn trees died. However, the extremely arid climate has kept these trunks from decaying, and they stand as black skeletons on the white, dried-up clay salt pan, forming a sharp contrast with the surrounding orange-red sand dunes.Windhoek · 59 km from Sesriem

Walvis Bay Waterfront is the core leisure and sightseeing area of Walvis Bay. The waterfront extends along the lagoon and features a coastal promenade lined with restaurants, cafes, and shops, making it perfect for strolling, dining, and sightseeing. Walvis Bay Lagoon is listed as a wetland of international importance, attracting large numbers of migratory birds every year. Flocks of flamingos often gather in the shallow waters, forming large pink groups on the lagoon's surface. The lagoon and surrounding waters are also home to wildlife such as Cape fur seals, dolphins, pelicans, and cormorants, and in some seasons, you can even see whales swimming offshore. Boat tours departing from the waterfront are a popular local experience. The routes usually pass Pelican Point—a sandbar extending into the Atlantic Ocean with a historic lighthouse at its tip and a large colony of Cape fur seals living on the shore. When sailing on a catamaran, dolphins often swim alongside the boat. Choosing a kayak allows you to get closer to the seal colonies, as the seals are curious and often swim up to the kayak to interact. In addition, thanks to the stable sea breezes year-round, kitesurfing and windsurfing are also common water activities here.Namibia · Walvis Bay

Namib-Naukluft National Parkis located on the Atlantic coast of western Namibia, stretching between the coast and the inland escarpment. The park features diverse landscapes, including rolling red sand dunes, vast gravel plains, and the Naukluft Mountains in the east. It brings together desert, mountain, and coastal scenery, showcasing the unique and magnificent natural landscape of southwestern Africa. Sea fog penetrates deep into the desert, providing precious moisture for flora and fauna adapted to the environment and nurturing a unique desert ecosystem. The vast sea of sand is constantly changing under the influence of the wind, presenting fluid curves and rich colors, making this seemingly desolate land full of natural vitality. The iron in the sand grains has oxidized over long periods, creating a gradient of colors from bright orange-red to deep crimson. The older the sand dunes, the deeper their color usually is.Namibia · Maltahohe

Due to global climate change, Death Valley isn't actually as "dead" as it seems. In this unusual year where rain fell even during the dry season, small puddles and living plants still exist in Death Valley; it's just that the famous dead trees have been dead for over a century.

This is a very unique geological landscape, a large area of white sandstone surrounded by red sand dunes. In these sand dunes, there are often dead camel thorn trees. These trees have been dead for more than 500 years, and some are even 1,000 years old. It is incredible that they can still stand here. This is all thanks to the dry climate here, which creates such a magical landscape.
