Seopjikoji is located in the eastern part of Jeju Island and is a cape that extends into the open sea. There are various theories about the origin of "Seopji," such as "narrow land," while "koji" is the Jeju dialect for a cape protruding into the sea. The coastline here is composed of black volcanic rock, and red volcanic scoria can be seen around Hongak, which contrasts with rocks of various shapes. The cliff top features an open grassland where Jeju horses are often seen grazing on the grassy slopes. In the distance, the sea is blue, and you can also overlook Seongsan Ilchulbong, which is approx. 180m above sea level. This place was a filming location for the Korean drama "All In," and the scenes in the drama featuring the grassland, coastline, and white lighthouse left a deep impression. Other film and television works such as "Eyes of Dawn" and "High Kick!" were also filmed here. Walking along the coastal trail, you can see the white lighthouse standing high on the grassy slope, and after climbing the steps, you can look out over the winding coastline. The Seonseol Rock on the nearby sea is also quite unique, and there is a local legend that the son of the Dragon King waited for a fairy and then turned into a rock. The grassland also preserves a stone beacon mound from the Joseon Dynasty, which was used in the past to transmit coastal defense messages using fire and smoke. Along the path leading to the lighthouse, you can see the windbreak stone walls common in Jeju. The canola flower fields inside the walls turn golden yellow in spring, forming a coastal view together with the grassland, strange rocks, lighthouse, and the sea. Strolling along the trail, you can enjoy the coastal scenery and grassland views all the way.Seogwipo · 39.3 km from downtown

Seogwipo Submarine is renowned for its fully submersible sightseeing experience, taking marine enthusiasts deep into Jeju's azure waters. During the 45-minute voyage, the submarine gradually descends through three ecological layers to reach the 40-meter-deep ocean world. Panoramic cabin windows offer unobstructed views of underwater wonders: sunlight piercing the surface creates shifting Tyndall beams that change color with depth, spotted seahorses glide gracefully among coral reefs, fluorescent clownfish schools flow like a moving galaxy through shipwreck remains, and giant spider crabs sweep past observation windows with their long legs. Professional divers outside the cabin interact with travelers through hand signals while dancing with fish schools. The quad-language audio guide (Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean) reveals Jeju's unique volcanic basalt seabed formations and artificial reef ecosystems. With constant temperature/pressure controls and German military-grade safety systems, the experience is comfortable and safe for both children and seniors. As the submarine ascends, passengers witness rainbows refracting through the surface and seagulls soaring overhead - creating a breathtaking 3D marine panorama. This dry deep-sea adventure, perfectly blending technology with nature, has become Jeju's must-experience ecotourism attraction.Seogwipo · 1.6 km from downtown

Udo

4.7/5
1.9k reviews
Udo, known by various names such as Coral Island, Haenyeo Island, and Lighthouse Island, is a small island located in the eastern part of Jeju. The island is shaped like a lying cow, hence the name Udo, which means "Cow Island." Apart from the parasitic volcano Udobong of Hallasan, the island is generally flat, with steep cliffs where it meets the sea. 80% of the filming for Jeon Do-yeon's "My Mother, the Mermaid" took place on Udo. Choi Ji-woo's "Now and Forever" and Jun Ji-hyun's "Il Mare" also featured scenes shot on Udo, making it one of Jeju's representative tourist attractions. The peak standing on the flat land of Udo is Udobong. Its unique height offers a panoramic view of Udo and even a glimpse of Seongsan Ilchulbong. Climbing up the slope along the fence to the top, you arrive at the white lighthouse. The path connecting the lawn and the reed field seems more charming than the view from the top of the lighthouse. A few cows scattered among the bushes remind visitors of the island's name. Unknown wildflowers sway in the wind, creating a romantic scene akin to a lyrical poem. There are also miniature models of lighthouses such as the Sokcho Lighthouse and the Pagoda Lighthouse on display here. The path to the lighthouse is quite steep, making it unsuitable for the elderly or infirm to climb. Additionally, "Udo Eight Views" are the representative landscapes of Udo, including four pairs of scenes: Day and Night (Daytime Moon, Night Fishing Sails), Heaven and Earth (Tianjin Mountain View, Dito Green Sand), Front and Back (Front Port Island View, Back Sea Cliff), East and West (East Coast Whale Cave, West Beach White Sand). The Back Sea Cliff and East Coast Whale Cave, part of the Udo Eight Views, are located under the towering Udobong. The Back Sea Cliff is 20 meters high and 30 meters wide, surrounding the Black Sand Beach, famous for its black sand. The East Coast Whale Cave, located at the end of the beach, is one of Udo's famous caves, named for its capacity to hold eastern whales, also known as "Nose Cave." The entrance to the East Coast Whale Cave is visible only at low tide. Enjoying the outside sky and sea view from inside the cave offers a unique experience.Jeju City · 46 km from Seogwipo

Hallasan National Park

Hallasan National Park centers on Hallasan, which stands at an elevation of approx. 1,950 m. The main peak is a shield-shaped dormant volcano, and its name means "high enough to pull the galaxy." The crater at the summit is filled with water, forming Baengnokdam, and is surrounded by over 300 parasitic volcanic cones. The vegetation on the mountain changes with altitude, transitioning from subtropical plants at the foothills to cold-temperate forests at higher elevations, creating a rich natural landscape. The snow-capped summit is particularly striking in winter, and the late snow at Baengnokdam is one of the local natural sights. Hiking is the primary way to explore the park, with the Seongpanak and Gwaneumsa trails leading to Baengnokdam. The Seongpanak trail is longer but relatively gentle, offering views of forests and alpine plants along the way; the Gwaneumsa trail passes through Tamna Valley, Samgakbong Shelter, and other locations, with more varied terrain and a steeper final section. From late spring to early summer, azaleas in the high-altitude areas bloom one after another, contrasting beautifully with the deep green fir forests. If you prefer a shorter hike, you can also choose the Eorimok or Yeongsil trails. Neither of these trails leads to Baengnokdam, but they offer views of valleys, forests, rock walls, and unique rock formations along the way.Jeju City · 12.1 km from Seogwipo

Daepo Jusangjeolli Cliff

6
4.6/5
1.1k reviews
Daepo Jusangjeolli Cliff is located on the south coast of Jeju Island and is a coastal landform formed by volcanic activity. Black basalt columns extend along the coast for approx. 1 km and are approx. 30–40m high. The cross-sections of the columns are quadrangular to hexagonal, arranged in layers like steps, or like a folding screen surrounding the coast. These stone columns were formed when lava from a volcanic eruption flowed into the sea, cooled rapidly, contracted, and cracked. Over time, they were eroded by waves to form the landscape seen today. The main way to view this site is from the top of the cliff. Visitors can walk along wooden boardwalks and observation decks to enjoy the view of the neatly arranged black stone columns and the coastal scenery from above. Clear seawater constantly crashes against the rock walls, creating layers of white spray. When the waves are strong, the spray can even rise over 20m high, creating a striking coastal scene. The top of the cliff is covered with lush vegetation and faces the open sea. On sunny days, you can enjoy the deep blue water, and in the evening, you can see the sunset reflecting on the sea. The visit is primarily a walking tour, allowing you to experience the natural scenery where the unique volcanic landform and the waves intertwine up close.Seogwipo · 12.6 km from downtown

I visited Jeju Island during my trip to South Korea. Located in southwestern South Korea, Jeju Island is the largest island in the country and its only special autonomous province. The direct flight from Guangzhou to Jeju Island takes about two and a half hours. Jeju Island is famous for its volcanic landscape and mild climate, earning it the nickname "Korea's Hawaii." In 2007, its natural landscapes, including Hallasan Mountain and lava caves, were listed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. Famous attractions on the island include Hallasan Mountain, lava caves, Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak, and the Olle Trails, among others.

Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak is an iconic World Natural Heritage site on Jeju Island. This "green crown," formed by an underwater volcanic eruption, rises majestically from the sea, its massive crater at the summit creating a stunning contrast with 99 other uniquely shaped peaks. Not only is it an exceptional spot for watching the sunrise over the sea, but climbing to the top also offers panoramic views of the azure ocean and the beautiful Udo Island. It's an unmissable destination for anyone visiting Jeju Island to experience the wonders of nature.

Also known as Seopji Cape, it's a volcanic rock cape on the east coast of Jeju Island. It's located in Seongsan-eup, Seogwipo City, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, near Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak. The name means: "Seopji" is an ancient place name, and "Gaji" is a Jeju dialect word referring to an outward-protruding terrain. Formed by a volcanic eruption approximately 200,000 years ago, the basalt coastline is open to the public free of charge. The cliffside meadows are treeless, offering expansive views; black basalt reefs contrast beautifully with the azure sea and sky, with a magnificent rock rising from the sea. The white lighthouse is a landmark, accessible by climbing to overlook the coastline; stone walls and rapeseed fields (golden in April) line the path. An ancient beacon tower (stone structure, approximately 4 meters high) is preserved. It was a filming location for the Korean dramas *All In* and *Queen In-hyun's Man*, and features the "All in House" drama museum.

The island has its own unique atmosphere that you won’t find on Jeju or on the Korean mainland. You can circle the island on an electric bike in 4–5 hours, but I’d dedicate a whole day to this trip. And be sure to try the local culinary delights.

The weather was great and the sea views were beautiful. The boat sailed along the southern coast from west to east and then back. The bow position was excellent; hold on tight, wear your life jacket, and experience the feeling of speeding against the wind. If you're prone to seasickness, take some medication beforehand; they're available at convenience stores, otherwise it will affect your experience. Dolphin watching is entirely a matter of luck. The boat isn't specifically designed for dolphin watching; it just sails along the coast. We didn't see any, but the scenery was beautiful, so it was worth it. I'd give it 4 stars, deducting one star because we didn't encounter any dolphins. The coffee in the shop was excellent. The crew were nice, but the staff at check-in were rather indifferent.

Hallasan Mountain, one of South Korea's three most famous mountains, is located in the center of Jeju Island. At 1950 meters, it is the highest peak in South Korea. Hallasan is an extinct volcano, with Baekrokdam, a volcanic lake with a diameter of 500 meters, at its summit. Due to its high altitude, the climate exhibits a vertical distribution from subtropical to frigid zones, and the mountain is home to over 1800 plant species and over 4000 animal species. In 1970, Hallasan was designated a Korean National Park, and in 2007 it was designated a World Natural Heritage Site.

I was absolutely stunned by these black rock walls on Jeju Island! It's amazing how the collision of volcanic eruptions and ocean waves over millions of years can create such a breathtaking natural wonder 🌊🌋 Regarding the columnar strata, these are hexagonal stone pillars formed by the cooling and contraction of magma after a volcanic eruption. The densely packed black pillars look as if meticulously arranged by God, plunging straight into the sea. At high tide, the waves crash against the rock walls, splashing up white spray, and against the backdrop of the distant blue sky and white clouds, every frame looks like a scene from a movie!
