Grand-Place of Brussels

7.4
4.6/5
598 reviews
Grand-Place of Brussels is the urban heart of Brussels and was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1998. The square is rectangular, approx. 100 m long and nearly 70 m wide, and is paved with granite. Most of the surrounding buildings were built in the late 17th century and still preserve their original appearance, bringing together a variety of architectural styles including Gothic, Baroque, and Louis XIV. One of the striking buildings on the square is the Brussels Town Hall, a typical Gothic building that reached its current scale after multiple expansions and renovations. The top of its spire is decorated with a sculpture of Saint Michael slaying a demon. The building with spires opposite the Town Hall is known as the "King's House" and now houses the Brussels City Museum. The gilded bronze statue of Everard 't Serclaes in a corner of the square is also worth noting; it commemorates the Brussels folk hero Everard 't Serclaes and depicts the scene of his death. Other buildings surrounding the square mostly belonged to historical guilds, and the facade of each guild building is decorated with sculptures of figures revered by the guild or symbolic animals. During the day, you can savor the beauty of the architecture. After nightfall, when the lights come on, the murals and carvings on the buildings shine brilliantly under the illumination, making it a great place for night photography.Belgium · Brussels

Rigi

7.3
4.7/5
332 reviews
Rigi is renowned as the "queen of the mountains" and serves as the Alpine foothills extending into Switzerland's central plateau. On clear days, standing at the Rigi Kulm viewing platform and gazing northeast, one's view stretches across the Swiss plateau dotted with lakes, all the way to Germany's Black Forest and France's Vosges Mountains. Turning around reveals the continuous Alpine peaks and the azure Lake Lucerne at the foot. On sunny mornings, the summit often gathers travelers who come specifically to witness the Alpine sunrise, a quintessential experience of this mountain. As early as the 19th century, this was a favored holiday destination for European high society, with cultural figures like Victor Hugo having reached the summit. In 1868, Queen Victoria of England also ascended by sedan chair. Today, the ascent remains distinctive: the cogwheel railway from Vitznau, built in 1871, is one of Europe's earliest mountain railways; from Goldau, a cogwheel railway also leads directly to the summit. If starting from Weggis, you can take a cable car to enjoy aerial views of the lake and mountains before arriving at Kaltbad midway up the mountain. This mountain features gentle slopes, with over a hundred km of walking trails extending layer by layer along one side. The area boasts a rich variety of alpine flowers, including a dedicated mountain flower path that offers a particularly pleasant stroll during blooming seasons. A scenic, gradual slope trail from the summit takes approx. 2 hrs to complete, presenting lovely views with minimal physical demand. The mid-mountain resort of Kaltbad is ideal year-round: winter activities include skiing, sledding, ice skating, and cross-country skiing, with beginners able to enroll in ski school courses. Scattered across the slopes are restaurants, hotels, and holiday apartments featuring terraces and viewpoints—perfect for resting tired legs while dining with panoramic lake and mountain views.Switzerland · Arth

Lake Lucerne

Lake Lucerne is located in central Switzerland. The German name Vierwaldstättersee means "four forest lakes" and is the birthplace of the Swiss Confederation. The winding shores of the lake connect Lucerne with the surrounding peaks, framing many beautiful landscapes. The city of Lucerne is located on the edge of Lake Lucerne. Every summer, tourists from all over the world will gather here to enjoy the cool feeling in summer. Beautiful lake scenery and shore scenery The dazzling lake water of Lake Lucerne is crystal-like and dazzling, with a poetic and picturesque scene, looking out from the shore of the pier, the steeple cathedral, uniquely shaped houses, renovated like a mushroom cloud The large, bare trees form a colorful picture. There are often swans and water birds circling and playing on the lake, and the color of the lake reflects the beautiful scenery of the snow-capped mountains and the city in the distance. There are many beautiful buildings on the shore of Lake Lucerne. It was a typical European classical building, only five or six stories high, the walls were painted white, light yellow, blue, pink, and brown, and most of the roofs were bright red. The Capel Covered Bridge and the octagonal water tower walk along the lake, and not far away is a striking wooden bridge of more than 200 meters, which spans the lake diagonally. This is the old covered wooden bridge in Europe, the Capel Covered Bridge. There is an octagonal water tower in the middle of the bridge, which is also one of the most remarkable landmarks in Lucerne. There are colorful geranium flowers on the outside of the covered bridge, which looks like a beautiful ribbon from a distance. It is also called "Flower Bridge Water Tower" by many people, and it is a favorite place for couples to take pictures. The upright water tower and the recumbent wooden bridge imprint each other, forming a unique rhythm on Lake Lucerne. There is no hustle and bustle here, there is no back side by side, it is quiet and peaceful. Lake Lucerne Cruise If you want to fully appreciate Lake Lucerne, it is recommended to take a cruise on Lake Lucerne, so that you can have a panoramic view of the scenery on both sides. The boating lake is immersive, and it feels relaxed and happy. The little white sails are like white swans, and the blue lake is like a sapphire inlaid in the city. It is beautiful under the background of snow-capped mountains and white clouds. Very moving and enchanting. Lake Lucerne has a large fleet of ships from all over Switzerland, including antique steam paddlewheels and modern large cruise ships, with routes running all year round. The classic routes include "Lunch Cruise" and "Pilatus Golden Circle" cruise section. In summer, pedal boats can be rented at the confluence of the Reuss River and Lake Lucerne.Switzerland · Ennetburgen

Lion Monument

552 reviews
Lion Monument is a rock relief designed by Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen to commemorate the Swiss mercenaries who sacrificed their lives in 1792 during the defense of the Tuileries Palace in Paris. The relief is carved into a shallow niche in a rock face, depicting a lion pierced by a spear in its shoulder, lying painfully and helplessly on the ground, its face filled with the sorrow of death. Under the lion's right front paw are two shields, bearing the cross emblem symbolizing Switzerland and the fleur-de-lis emblem of the French royal family, respectively. Above the sculpture is the Latin inscription "HELVETIORUM FIDEI AC VIRTUTI", meaning "To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss". There is a small pond in front of the sculpture, which reflects the relief and is a popular spot to view its reflection. The park where the sculpture is located has information boards that explain the historical background in German and English. There is a quiet area on the high ground of the park, offering an elevated view of the entire relief. American author Mark Twain once spoke highly of this sculpture, believing it to be full of the power of sorrow and emotion.Switzerland · Lucerne

Lake Brienz

Lake Brienz is located at the northern foot of the Alps, named after the village of Brienz on the northeast side of the lake, while Interlaken lies on its southwest side. Surrounded by steep peaks, a boat tour on Lake Brienz offers breathtaking views of the Alpine scenery. The glacial meltwater carries fine rock flour, giving the entire lake a rare turquoise hue that becomes especially vivid on sunny days. Paired with the steep cliffs and dense forests on both shores, every snapshot looks like a postcard—a highly distinctive hallmark of this lake. Themed cruise with rich experiences Lake Brienz cruise offers various types of experiences. In addition to regular sightseeing cruises, it also provides special themed cruise activities, such as "breakfast cruise", "Indian dinner cruise tour", or "fish and jazz tour" on the cruise ship deck, etc. These are worth experiencing for travelers who love Swiss cuisine. Visit the village of Brienz The village of Brienz on the east shore of the lake is a particularly quiet small town, with fewer visitors during the off-peak season, making it perfect for strolling. You can also take the historic steam train—the Brienz-Rothorn Railway—to reach Rothorn. Giessbach Falls Another destination of the Lake Brienz cruise is the Giessbach Falls, where white waterfalls cascade down from 500 m high into the lake, crashing against rocks with a deafening roar, creating a spectacular sight. Beside the falls stands the Giessbach Hotel, resembling a fairytale castle full of dreamy charm. Cycling and hikes around the lake Lake Brienz is also ideal for cycling around the lake, with well-planned bike routes that allow you to experience the beauty of the lake up close. There are significant elevation changes during the ride, and fog may occur in rainy weather, so it is recommended to choose a suitable route based on your fitness level. Of course, there are also popular hiking trails here, such as walking along the southern shore of Lake Brienz, starting from Bönigen and passing through Iseltwald to reach Giessbach.Switzerland · Iseltwald

Old Town

Old Town is situated along the banks of the Reuss. The cobblestone streets are lined with well-preserved medieval buildings, many of which feature colorful frescoes on their exterior walls depicting religious legends and scenes of daily life. These frescoed buildings can be found around the various squares throughout the Old Town. The Chapel Bridge, which spans the Reuss, is an iconic landmark of the Old Town. The interior beams of this wooden covered bridge are decorated with triangular painted panels depicting important scenes from Swiss history, and the octagonal water tower next to the bridge is equally striking. A large number of frescoed buildings are concentrated around the squares in the Old Town, and you can stroll through them to admire the wall paintings of different themes one by one. There are open-air cafes along both banks of the Reuss, and swans often swim leisurely on the river. Sitting by the river to watch the pedestrians on the bridge and the swans playing in the water is a common way to experience the atmosphere of the Old Town.Switzerland · Lucerne

Vallée de la Pétrusse

Vallée de la Pétrusse is also known asVallée de la Pétrusse, a rift about 100 m wide and about 60 m deep that runs across Luxembourg City, naturally separating the high ground of the old town from the new district by the train station. The gorge once served as Luxembourg City's natural barrier, and remnants of fortifications such as bastions, gun ports, and secret passages still remain between the cliffs. It was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1994. Today the gorge has returned to nature, with towering trees spreading layers of green shade and the Pétrusse stream quietly flowing along the valley floor. Stone steps from the plaza side lead all the way down to the valley floor, and along the shaded path you can look up to see the Pont Adolphe spanning the gorge and the arch of the old bridge. The path is gentle, suitable for walking, jogging, and cycling. If you only want to view it from a distance, stand on the plaza or on the bridge spanning the gorge and the canyon's greenery and the old town roofs will appear in the same view. On misty mornings, the valley floor is shrouded in fog, which further accentuates the canyon's depth. In summer, you can also take the open-air sightseeing train Pétrusse express and, with commentary, view the canyon's military remains and natural scenery.Luxembourg City · 74.7 km from Saarbruecken

Lake Thun is located on the Bernese Oberland between Thun and Interlaken. The lake is deep blue and crystal clear, and there are not only beautiful views of the Alps around the lake, but also traditional Swiss wooden villages. The summer resort Lake Thun is a local summer family holiday resort. There are many holiday houses along the coast, and you can see many people swimming, playing in the water or cycling and hiking, which is very lively. In addition, it is also popular with sailing enthusiasts for its very good breeze. A boat cruise is the best way to experience Lake Thun, starting from the pier next to Interlaken West Station, roaming west through the narrow waterway, and soon looking back at the magnificent scenery of the Jungfrau region. The cruise ships will stop at several stops along the lake, especially the famous town of Spiez. The end of the cruise is the medieval city of Thun on the west bank of the lake. The whole route takes about 2 hours one way. Cycling around the lake Many Swiss people love to ride bicycles along Lake Thun. Although there are more than 50 kilometers of roads around the lake, it is very exhausting, but the scenery along the way will be very enjoyable. Of course, you can also choose to ride one of the distances, and I believe you will have a good experience. Hiking in the mountains around Lake Thun is a great place to go on foot, and there is something special about the panoramic views of Lake Thun from tops such as the Niederhorn.Switzerland · Sigriswil

Engelberg-Titlis is a breathtaking alpine paradise that stole my heart! The panoramic views from the rotating cable car are absolutely unforgettable. From snow-covered peaks to thrilling glacier activities, every moment felt magical. The Titlis Cliff Walk offered an adrenaline rush with stunning scenery. Engelberg village, with its charming vibes and cozy cafés, added a peaceful touch to the adventure. Whether you're a nature lover or thrill-seeker, this destination is a must-visit.

Amazing view from the top. A 360° view of the snowcapped mountains in the distance and lakes below. The view from the train up was also amazing with the view of the lake and mountain at a really steep angle. Get the ferry from Lucerne and you've got a spectacular view all the way. There's another older train from the top that goes on route b through the valley round the back but there's not much to see as it's mostly through the forest.

Lake Lucerne is really nice. When the weather is good, you can see the snow-capped mountains. Unfortunately, we stayed there for three days, and the weather was good only when we arrived in the evening of the first day, so we didn't take advantage of it. The buildings by the lake, the Ferris wheel, and the Flower Bridge Water Tower are simply too beautiful to take in. The boat ride to Weggis is even more beautiful.

The Lion Monument is a must-see when traveling in Lucerne, Switzerland. In the old town of Lucerne, walk through the bustling streets and enter the simple iron gate. There is a clear lake and a huge cliff. In the center of the cliff, the Lion Monument built in 1821 is clearly visible. In the stone cave carved out in the middle of the 6-meter-high and 10-meter-wide monument, a dying lion lies weakly on the ground, with unyielding resentment in his eyes, sharp arrows piercing his back, and Swiss cross shields scattered around him. Above the lion statue is engraved Latin: Dedicated to the loyal and brave Switzerland; the text below records the moving history commemorated... At that time, Switzerland was a poor small country. Men forced to make a living went to various European countries as mercenaries, and they were loyal to their duties and brave. During the French Revolution in 1792, when the mob attacked the Tuileries Palace in Paris on August 10, all 786 Swiss mercenary officers and soldiers in the guard were killed in order to protect King Louis XVI and the Queen.

The Petros Canyon, also known as the Luxembourg Grand Canyon, is one of the world's famous scenic spots. It is about 100 meters wide and 60 meters deep, naturally dividing Luxembourg City into two urban areas, the new and old areas in the north and south. Constitution Square is the best place to view the Grand Canyon and the scenery on both sides. Opposite the Grand Canyon, there is a palace-like building located in the green, which looks particularly magnificent. It is the Luxembourg National Savings Bank. At its north end is a tall pointed round bell tower, and on both sides are medieval buildings with only roofs visible.
