Seljalandsfoss

93 reviews
Seljalandsfoss has a drop of approx. 60m, with water sourced from glacial meltwater. The waterfall's unique feature is a natural recessed path at the base of the cliff, where visitors can walk behind the water curtain to experience the roar of the cascading water and the surrounding mist up close. Looking out from behind the curtain, the view of the distant fields and horizon through the splashing water offers a unique and picturesque perspective, making it a favorite spot for photography enthusiasts. Sunset is an ideal time to capture the view from behind the curtain, as the warm light of the setting sun shines through the water from the west, creating exceptionally rich layers of light and shadow. When walking along the path, be mindful of the slippery rocks underfoot. The dense mist can also wet your clothing and electronic devices, so it is necessary to prepare waterproof gear in advance.Rangarthing eystra · 17.1 km from downtown

Skógafoss

Skógafoss is located on the south coast of Iceland. The Skógá River cascades down from the top of a cliff approx. 60 m high and 25 m wide, forming an almost continuous curtain of water. This cliff is a remnant of Iceland's ancient coastline—as the coastline has retreated southward over thousands of years, the former coastal cliff was left inland, and the waterfall now plunges directly from the edge of this cliff. The area in front of the waterfall is filled with mist year-round, and on sunny days, you can often see a single or even a double rainbow; if you walk to the base of the waterfall, you will get soaked by the mist. On the east side of the waterfall, there is a zigzagging staircase trail leading to the top of the cliff, where you can overlook the entire waterfall and the distant south coast plains. There is also an ancient Norse legend about this waterfall: it is said that in the early days, someone hid a chest of gold treasure behind the waterfall. After rumors of the treasure spread, treasure hunters came in an endless stream, and later, someone actually found the ring of the chest here. This ring is now kept in the nearby Skógar Museum, and the legend of the treasure has been passed down to this day, becoming part of the waterfall's unique cultural charm.Rangarthing eystra · 15.7 km from downtown
Myrdalsjokull Glacier

Myrdalsjokull Glacier

6
Myrdalsjokull Glacier is the southernmost glacier in Iceland and the fourth largest in the country, with an ice cap covering an area of approximately 595 km² and a peak reaching approximately 1,510 m. Hidden beneath the ice cap is the highly active Katla volcano, with a crater diameter of approximately 10 km, covered by hundreds of meters of ice. Once it erupts, high-temperature magma rapidly melts the ice layer, which can trigger highly destructive glacial floods, making it one of the most closely monitored geological activities in Iceland. The glacier has several outlet glaciers extending downwards, including Solheimajokull, where black volcanic ash and blue-white ice layers interweave to create a typical landscape of Iceland's land of ice and fire.Myrdalshreppur · 20.2 km from Rangarthing eystra

Solheimajokull

4.5/5

Solheimajokullis located in southern Iceland and is an outlet glacier extending south from the Myrdalsjokull Glacier, the fourth-largest ice cap in Iceland. It is quite different from the pure white glaciers people often imagine: the ice cap covers the active Katla volcano, and volcanic ash from numerous historical eruptions has fallen onto the ice and snow, only to be compacted by subsequent snowfall, giving the ice surface a banded texture of black-gray and blue-white, resembling an open book of geological rings. This glacier has retreated significantly in recent decades, and the depression left by the retreating glacier tongue has formed a meltwater lake. Ice fragments containing layers of volcanic ash float on the lake surface, while blue ice walls, moraines, and crevasses are clearly visible from the shore, serving as a window to intuitively experience the dynamics of glacial melting. This is also a classic site in Iceland for glacier hiking and ice climbing. Follow a guide, put on crampons, and step onto the ice to walk among crevasses and ridges, observing the deep blue ancient ice up close; if you prefer to view it from a distance, a walk along the lakeshore offers a full view of the glacier and the surrounding volcanic landscape.Myrdalshreppur · 20.8 km from Rangarthing eystra
Gljufrabui Waterfalls

Gljufrabui Waterfalls

3.5
Gljufrabui Waterfalls is a hidden waterfall near Seljalandsfoss on Iceland's south coast, tucked deep within the rock walls of a narrow canyon. You must wade through a stream and squeeze through a narrow rock crevice to enter. Inside, it opens up—a waterfall approx. 40m high descends from above, pouring into a natural circular space surrounded by basalt walls. With splashing water and mist, it feels like being immersed in a natural cathedral. Gljufrabui means canyon dweller in Icelandic, a fitting name for this secret waterfall hidden within the rock crevice. Located just a few hundred meters from the famous Seljalandsfoss, it receives fewer visitors because it requires wading through water, offering a true sense of adventure. We recommend wearing waterproof boots and quick-drying clothing. The site is open year-round.Rangarthing eystra · 16.8 km from downtown
Kvernufoss

Kvernufoss

3.1
Kvernufoss, meaning millstone waterfall in Icelandic, is located in southern Iceland, hidden deep within the Kvernugil Canyon. It is approx. 30m high and 10m wide. Compared to the more famous Skógafoss nearby, it receives fewer visitors and retains a more tranquil, pristine atmosphere. The most unique feature of the waterfall is a path behind the cliff that allows visitors to walk through, where you can look up at the cascading water from behind the veil and experience the power of the water up close—a feature quite similar to Seljalandsfoss in Iceland. The canyon walls are made of dark basalt covered in thick green moss, and the area is misty, deep, and tranquil.Rangarthing eystra · 16.8 km from downtown

Akureyri Church is situated on a central hill in the northern Icelandic city of Akureyri, with its twin spires overlooking the Eyjafjörður fjord, making it an iconic landmark of the city. The church was designed by the renowned Icelandic architect Guðjón Samúelsson, who also designed Hallgrimskirkja in Reykjavik. Construction began in 1929, and it was consecrated in 1940. Its exterior design is simple and powerful, with angular twin spires that blend basalt geometric elements with modernist aesthetics. The interior houses one of the largest pipe organs in Iceland, featuring over 3,200 pipes, and its melodious sounds echo throughout the church during services.Rangarthing eystra · 3.8 km from downtown

黑沙滩’s sand is essentially granular basalt, originating from the cooling and fragmentation of ancient volcanic lava. The sand is jet-black and fine. Scoop up a handful and your hand will be covered in black, but with a gentle shake, it scatters and falls away, leaving almost no trace. On one side of the beach, regular hexagonal basalt columns rise like the pipes of a giant pipe organ, a geological wonder formed by the natural cracking of large-scale lava flows as they slowly cooled and contracted. The cliffs above the beach are breeding grounds for seabirds such as puffins and fulmars. Please note that the waves here are rough and turbulent, and unpredictable sneaker waves often occur. When visiting, be sure to stay away from the water line and maintain a safe distance.Myrdalshreppur · 40.3 km from Rangarthing eystra

The Blue Lagoon is located in Grindavik on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwestern Iceland. It is a geothermal hot spring formed by volcanic lava. The water temperature is about 37-39 degrees Celsius. The lake water is rich in minerals such as silicon and sulfur, making it appear faint blue. Hot spring experience The Blue Lagoon has now become a symbol of Iceland. Many people who come to Iceland will choose to take a good bath here. Volcanic mud mask Don't forget to apply some silica mud on your face as a mask when taking a hot spring bath. The silica mud here is volcanic mud, which contains many minerals. Sauna In addition, you can also go to the sauna on the shore to steam for a while, and then come out to continue soaking. If it snows, it feels very unusual to immerse your body in warm water and look up at the white snow flying all over the sky.Iceland · Grindavik

The Forest Falls is one of the many waterfalls in Iceland. The scenery is very beautiful. When we arrived, the weather was super good. The water vapor from the waterfall drew a particularly beautiful rainbow under the sunlight, which was very impressive.

The Blue Lagoon is very beautiful. Go there in winter and enjoy the feeling of ice and fire. The Blue Lagoon is very large. You can also go to the middle of the lake to apply white volcanic mud, which is said to be good for beauty and health. Anyway, go and have fun. It's very interesting. Don't forget to bring your phone to take pictures!

As a landmark hot spring in Iceland, it's definitely worth a visit. The colors are truly unique, and the scenery is beautiful. Soaking in the hot spring while looking at the volcano and snow-capped mountains, and enjoying a cocktail is very relaxing.
