Lake Ohrid

5.3
4.9/5
31 reviews
Lake Ohrid's surface is at an altitude of nearly 700 m, and it is surrounded by high mountains. The lake is deep and clear, like a giant sapphire embedded among the mountains. The deepest part of the lake basin is nearly 300 m, and on clear days, the water transparency can reach about 20 m. Overlooking from the hillsides or slowly cruising across the lake, one is often met with an endless expanse of blue, serene and pure. This attraction is not only beautiful but also possesses an extremely rich and unique ecosystem. The lake is home to hundreds of endemic species of flora and fauna, many of which are rarely seen elsewhere in the world, making this lake an important natural treasure trove for studying ancient freshwater ecosystems. Visiting the lakeside in summer, you can swim and play in the water at the quiet bay beaches, or take a boat cruise along the shore to enjoy the magnificent scenery where mountains and water meet.North Macedonia · Ohrid

The church is nestled between the mountain and the lake, offering expansive views where the water and distant mountains reflect each other, creating a serene and beautiful view. The compact building blends into the lakeshore environment and is one of the most recognizable views here. The church features Byzantine architecture with some Armenian influences. The main structure is built of stone and brick, with a rectangular plan and a central octagonal dome. The exterior walls are intricately decorated, and the brick and stone patterns around the windows are layered. The interior retains some medieval frescoes, mainly located in the dome and altar areas, which hold artistic and historical value. After subsequent renovations, the building has gradually been restored to its original appearance. The old town of Ohrid is located on the seaside. The whole old town is built along the highlands and against the mountain. It looks very layered from a distance. There are many paths in the old town, and all kinds of shops are opened on both sides. It is really worth a walk in the old town to feel the different seaside style.

Very beautiful canyon where you can walk on a walkway along the rock or go kayaking, boating, etc. It is best to visit it late afternoon when there are fewer people as it is very touristy.

"Sophia" means "wisdom" in Greek. After the church was built, it quickly became the religious, political and cultural center of Kievan Rus.

Skopje Fortress is a must-see for visitors to the city. Its imposing walls offer a spectacular panoramic view of the Vardar River and the Old Town. Walking through its ruins transports you back in time to centuries of history, from the Byzantine Empire to the Ottoman Empire. Although much of the structure has been restored, it still retains its medieval essence. It's an ideal place for photos and to understand the evolution of Skopje. Entry is free, but there is little signage, so doing some research beforehand can be helpful.
